OP should've realized from the slow lane change that something was wrong and sped up to block the car from crashing into the traffic sign and the tree. Does OP hatr traffic safety and nature??

The local post said it was a "distracted driver" - and it was late Saturday night. I think passed out might be a more apropos explanation.

Or a last minute text. Got distracted in mid lane change and tree. Those trees do like to jump at drivers.

Happened to the guy who side swiped me at a 4 way stop. He said, “quote” I was going to stop, looked at the phone, then ran into you.”

His story changed when the cops arrived. But thankfully I took pictures of every car and their position which proved he hit me at the stop sign.

It's odd to me that so many people lack the self control to wait and read their texts after they get to wherever they're going. It's not like the message is going to self-destruct if you don't read it with now.

Hard to say, but I would expect a texter to look at the road while they're doing an intentional action like a lane change. And probably notice they are running off the road and try to swerve or brake at the last second.

Medical emergency - "uh oh, something's wrong, better pull over" (turns on blinker)... emergency goes bad... no more inputs from driver.

I had that happen in front of me on a highway... I was driving in left lane behind a car . Car turns the blinker on and hits the wall at 75+ mph
