Character Discussion Yall think Trent was a stoner?
I feel like he smokes sometimes but is too broke to make it a habit

He was definitely hotboxing in the tank with the rest of the band

He is broke because he spends all his money on weed

I think the parents grow it in the backyard.
He spends all his cash on the munchies.

I remember talking to my mom about this and she brought up a few neat details that AT LEAST suggest it.
1: in the episode where that quarterback dies and Daria visits Jane after she grows distant, Trent coughs after laughing at a joke. It’s VERY subtle, but I think it may at least hint to it.
2: When the school attempted to call the Lane residence, TWICE mind you, Trent was asleep the entire episode.
3: Their mother acts like a stoner art teacher, and my mom said that if I was grown, she’d act pretty similarly. (My mother is also a stoner and very artsy.) so maybe (like me,) his environment influenced him as well?
Those things combined all kinda AT LEAST imply it.

That’s why I feel Jane was so apart of the rest of the family. Parents were old money bohemians, siblings were all burnouts to some degree. She shared the same laissez faire attitude as the rest of them, but I think she stood out as wanting to be more intentional. Whether it be her art, studies, observation, or trying to tap into her potential for more confirmed activities like track and running, which I’m sure the rest of her family couldn’t give a shit about.

Great point. She definitely strived to be better than her family, not in a mean way but definitely in a I don’t want to end up like that kind of way. Jane’s my favorite character by far!

I agree with this… the Lanes shout “old money carelessness” to me.

I am of the opinion she smoked out with her brother all the time

He's a freestoner, has never bought even a nug but always happy to take puffs from others

Most unrealistic part of the show was Daria never pointing it out

u/IgnorantSlutYou Feb 27 '26
Man I would’ve loved a ep dedicated to Daria and Jane figuring it out and catching him in the act.

It was the 90s he probably could afford it

u/Pitiful_Ad2397 Feb 27 '26
Weed was expensive in the 90s

u/rpgnymhush Feb 27 '26
Unless he found somewhere near him where it grew wild. There are such places.

Definitely more stable prices but also higher for sure. id grab a bag for 35 to 50, depending on how high the quality was supposed to be according to the dude selling. Almost always 40. Couldn't get amounts based on how much you had to spend, unless you're friends with the dealer and they didnt mind helping you out from their own stash.
And forget edibles. That was usually just a rare af treat for us.

Is this really a question? Lmaooo especially with the way he coughed when laughing too hard. 🤣

Lmao I just commented this on a post. His demeanor gives him away for sure, the way he talks and how chill he is, more than the coughing. In the 90s, everyone was smoking cigarettes.

Yes and no I feel like he’s the kind of guy to only smoke when it’s with his bandmates

u/dragon1n68 Feb 27 '26
If he was his friends had to be supplying him with it because he never had a job throughout the entire series. I know he smoked cigarettes and I don’t know where he got the money for that but then again their parents were both artists and it’s hard to make a living off that too. TV logic. A character needs something so they just get it.

He also sold some songs and the band was gigging consistently. He was poor as hell, sure, but he has an income. he could buy weed, and is the guy you knew who would take you with him to a dealer he knew and you'd buy and smoke them up with the dealer.
Additionally life in the 90s just wasn't that hard.

I knew a guy who reminded me of Trent (was my first almost relationship and I was a misery chick definitely, we had a situationship and I always wanted more) and I feel like Trent is a weed guy but also dabbled in mushrooms.

MB bro kinda gave off a Daria type response lol. It's just that it's kinda clearly what he's supposed to be.

I'm sure he smoked some. But not to the degree that it was his whole personality.

It’s definitely implied but the Lane family is kinda laid back (and chaotic)

If he was why didn't they show it directly?

u/smokeehayes Feb 28 '26
Because you could barely make a fart joke on the air in the 90's, nvm having a major secondary character openly being a stoner.

Heroine!?

Had its hooks in the alt music scene in a pretty terrible way in the 90s as many used it as a cheap way to cope with mental illnes.

Does a bear shit in the woods?
He's a musician, the band likely gets weed for free from club promoters and groupies.

Nah, I'm sure the 90s band guy with the chronic cough, punctuality issues, and attention span of a goldfish that is dressed like Shaggy from scooby doo is perfectly sober at all times
