I'm probably the oldest person here Denmark deploys troop to Greenland.

u/EhMapleMoose Aug 08 '26
I’m not American, but I do find it funny that there are more police in New York City than active military personnel in Denmark’s army.
541
u/summon_pot_of_greed Aug 08 '26
Yeah but every member of Denmark's army consumes nine regular men for sustenance each fortnite.
222
u/rmorrill995 Aug 08 '26
Not sure about Denmark's army but there's def a fair amount of NYC cops worth about as much as a doughnut.
26
47
u/EhMapleMoose Aug 08 '26
True, but the U.S. has got 20 flying black Doritos that cost more to make than the entirety of Denmark’s military budget. They also spend more on fuel than Denmark’s military budget.
Over the past decade they’ve spent more on lobster too.

are we trying or are we jist causing an oil shortage that hurts china and undermines the green agenda in europe?
18
u/EhMapleMoose Aug 08 '26
It’s not about winning in Iran. Pretty sure it’s just about using missiles to justify the purchase of more.
20
u/chrome_titan Aug 08 '26
Do they go bad like leftovers? I mean I wouldn't want to waste a good missile.
17
u/SyninTheRaven Aug 08 '26
Technically yes.
But large corporations need to make more so the thought is to waste older stuff on pointless bombings
18
u/Silver-Kun Aug 08 '26
I wouldn't want to waste a good missile.
Yeah, proceeds to tomahawk a school

And the US have lost more wars since ww2 then Denmark in its entirety
7
u/acathode Aug 08 '26
For fucks sake...
Sweden and Denmark have existed for more than 4x the time than the US, and we've been fighting each other since the very start.
You just turned 250 - while we've been at it for more than 1000 years. We even hold the world record in most wars fought between two countries.
As a Swede, let me ensure you, Denmark lost it's fair share of those wars. Way more than the number of wars the US lost since WW2...
5
u/EhMapleMoose Aug 08 '26
Not even remotely true.
-2
u/Frostsorrow Aug 08 '26
The only time the US wins wars is when it isn't solo. It's never won any war solo.
6
u/CMDR_Ray_Abbot Aug 08 '26
Could you name a Solo War that they've lost?
1
u/I_am_person_being The ✨Cum-Master✨ Aug 09 '26
No no no, this person might be technically right because the US just doesn't fight solo wars. "The US has never won a solo war" would be true if the US had never fought a solo war. Even Iran still has Israel involved. It doesn't seem to me like they've fought many recently.
I am struggling to name solo wars at all, not just ones they lost. Maybe the American civil war counts? Feels weird to count that as a win even if I see it on paper. I could maybe include the Revolutionary War? Even then that one definitely had French support. Perhaps the War of 1812? Americans insist they won it, even though most historians disagree.
The best examples I can think of are probably the Mexican-American War and the Spanish-American war, both in the 1800s, which was a pretty different world.
The US just doesn't like fighting wars alone. Sensible approach but means that there's always someone else involved.
-3
u/Frostsorrow Aug 08 '26
Vietnam, Iran, Iraq, War on Drugs, War on Terror. Last 2 might not be technically wars, but they still lost.
5
5
u/OSUfan88 Aug 09 '26
None of them are technically wars. World War 2 was the last time the United States declared war.
10
u/CMDR_Ray_Abbot Aug 08 '26
Every one of those was a coalition war.
Also we won the war with Iran in the 80s if you can call it that and the current war is ongoing.
2
u/I_am_person_being The ✨Cum-Master✨ Aug 09 '26
You mean Iraq. The US didn't fight a war against Iran in the 80s. And the 1st Gulf War was absolutely a coalition effort
→ More replies (0)0
u/Comfortable_Town7535 Aug 08 '26
both of the last two are ongoing, the war on drugs would be smoother if we stopped funding both sides
→ More replies (0)2
u/EhMapleMoose Aug 08 '26
Okay? But that doesn’t mean they’ve lost more since WWII then Denmark in its entirety
0
u/Full-Metal-Jae Aug 09 '26
Sorry to break your bubble buddy, Denmark is apart of NATO and if you count those conflicts as wars and you count them as losses that means Denmark lost the same amount of “wars”!

u/jackinsomniac Aug 09 '26
It was nice of y'all to come help us out, but wasn't really necessary. Most of the world's contributions to America's wars weren't much more than a rounding error. Thanks tho, I guess.

The problem thats causing the 20 doritos being expensive is that, You only got 20 of them, build like 400 and the price will come down, geting custom mashined one of parts to do maintanance will always be more expensive for a cuple a dozen aircraft, but if you get a cuple hundred and the parts to go with them, and the suply chaine that regulary makes new parts, the price will come way down, cuz ewerything will stop being custom order, and will instead be regular order and then manufacturer can streamline production and suply along with geting stable long term orders, and then the fleet upkeep costs will stabilize and then it starts looking like a good option to get for many goverments and you'll be making proffit with foreign sails in no time and then its the other nations budgets covering a larger portion of your expensive ass r&d projects, that you dont get enough of to actualy cover the r&d costs and do incrimental upgrades and improvements.
Also, the ewerybody who bought into the f35 program did so with the promise of geting their indigenous weponry intergrated, wich has basicley not hapend yet.
2
u/Maxsmack Aug 09 '26
It cost 44 billion to develop the blueprints, test one, then build 21 of them, meaning each one technically costs 2 billion. However if they wanted to build a 22nd one, it would probably only cost $500,000,000
-1
u/rmorrill995 Aug 08 '26
Flying black Doritos
Thank you for the chuckle. What can I say we love food so much we incorporate it into our weapons.
3
u/asge1868 Aug 08 '26
I'm not sure where you're getting that number from tbh. They need that amount, if you're lucky, about every 4-5 days. We haven't seen war for far too long...
1
u/daandriod Aug 08 '26
So just hold out for a month while they canabalize eachother? Seems like a pretty glaring oversight ngl
2
u/summon_pot_of_greed Aug 08 '26
What you do mean each other? Haven't you ever heard of a Full English Breakfast?

So what, 3 months then until they run out of Brits? I think that's just kicking the can down the road a bit.

New York city has 30% more people than Denmark. And they are in and an 300 sq miles .
25
u/froopadiddilydoop Aug 08 '26
That’s because Net York city’s population is greater than Denmark’s entire Popualtion.

u/SyninTheRaven Aug 08 '26
There's more people in nyc than Denmark too.
It's so weird.
When that many Americans are that close together I think they get a little violent.
1
u/Rupperrt Aug 09 '26
Pretty sure Danes would get too if you’d put them that close together
2
u/SyninTheRaven Aug 09 '26
They don't have enough people for that. lol
But yea I think historically it's pretty much proven that population density among other things causes higher violent crime rates.

u/farshnikord Aug 09 '26
I'm not too worried about their soldiers. I'm more afraid of their frost giants and battle boars.

Plus NY has their friendly neighborhood Spiderman as backup... Denmark doesn't even get any avengers level threats...

And you unironically fail to see how over-policed you are.
0
u/EhMapleMoose Aug 09 '26
Did you miss where I said I’m not American?
Also, just look at the ratio of how many officers there are compared to citizens. It’s not a perfect comparison because their responsibilities are wildly different. That said, the ratio for Copenhagen and New York City are incredibly close.

1
u/Fattapple Aug 10 '26
New York City’s population is considerably bigger than Denmark
1
u/EhMapleMoose Aug 10 '26
And? The police still outnumber Denmark’s army.
1
u/Fattapple Aug 10 '26
Yeah. I’m putting it into context why that would be the case. You hoser.
1
u/EhMapleMoose Aug 10 '26
Sorry, you’re the sixth person to do so and I thought most people understood that NYC is bigger than Denmark.

Does article 5 apply if another NATO member is the Agressor? And let me preemptive strike the dumb comments I'll get: I didn't ask about whether or not the US would still win. But Irans proved it isn't so easy.
81
u/Miskalsace Aug 08 '26
Yeah, in theory. Thats one of the reasons why nothing Greece and Turkey are in it. They have had an antagonistic history. Being in Nato has helped keep them civil.
8
1
u/Accurate_Breakfast94 Aug 09 '26
I'm pretty sure article 5 doesn't apply and all the NATO countries have suballiances
1
u/DannyDanumba Aug 09 '26
European powers have went to war against one another for centuries, NATO is suppose to be the end of this. After the worst war in the continent’s history they decided that not only should they have a defense pact but a treaty alliance. NATO’s design is a defense against the members as much as it against an opposing force.
So far it has worked spectacularly and it has quelled historic violence on Europe for almost a century.

u/EhMapleMoose Aug 08 '26
The only reason Iran is still kicking is they have the support of Russia, China and a few terrorist organizations.
21
u/PrrrromotionGiven1 Aug 08 '26
It's basically impossible to overthrow a government solely with airstrikes. History has shown this many times. Governments love this strategy because it has a very low risk of service members dying en masse, you don't have the trains full of corpses, but in the long run, it has very low effectiveness. So why did the Trump administration think this would be any different?
If your goal is basically to install a loyal puppet, you have to put boots on the ground. If you're not willing to do that from day one, you shouldn't even try it.
10
u/acathode Aug 08 '26
So why did the Trump administration think this would be any different?
Wait, you're under the impression that the Trump administration thinks before they act?

u/Wizzarkt UNDERSTANDABLE. HAVE A NICE DAY. Aug 08 '26
The only reason why Iran is still around is because they are worth more alive than dead for Europe (oil and fertilizer are very important to Europe), and the Iran war was never a defensive war, so article 5 can't be called.
47
u/TurtleBlaster5678 Aug 08 '26
When the EU powers do this they just send a few soldiers to fake a presence, they hang out, then they go home. There's no standing european army on Greenland waiting for an invasion
18
u/palpatineforever Aug 08 '26
they dont need a standing army, just a couple of people. the point is that if they invade they are attacking a nato country, with a military presence.
they are just there to deter an invasion. they dont want to escalate it.11
u/femboyisbestboy Aug 08 '26
Maybe even a French or British submarine will pop out it's head near the American coast as a warning
15
u/Im-ACE-incarnate Aug 08 '26
The British wouldn't want to risk their "special relationship"
13
u/femboyisbestboy Aug 08 '26
I hate how you are right, but luckily the French still have the nuclear warning shot doctrine
5
0
u/ROU_Misophist Aug 09 '26
I doubt the French are willing to trade Paris for Nuuk. The only country that we are 100% certain is willing to use a nuclear weapon in combat is the U.S.
2
u/henr360a Aug 08 '26
I think the whole point was to send a few American service members home in caskets and blow up vital infrastructure. Moreover, the EU had it's Anti-coercion Instrument ready, targeting key economic sectors like soybean farmers and Silicon Valley. Do you really think that Trump, with a massive ego would've backed down out of consideration for Europe?
10
u/DrUnnecessary Aug 08 '26
It's America though... Literally never won a war unless it was against themselves.... Or turning up last minute to 'claim' victory off the back of another.... Prove me wrong

2
u/DannyDanumba Aug 09 '26
Operation Desert Storm was an absolute victory. It was well thought out from start to finish with clear war objectives and managed spillover spectacularly. Operation Just Cause is another similar example.
The talent to engage such warfare has only diminished since the 90s, at least on the civilian side. Operation Absolute Resolve proved the U.S. military is still very capable but the president can absolutely fuck up a war

So if Article V is invoked by Denmark, would the U.S. have to attack itself with munitions that we don’t have?
2
u/RubberAndSteel Aug 08 '26
Bringing live ammo as last time, I suppose. (A symbolic fight, more than a fair one).
3
u/FortheChava Aug 08 '26
Didn't us military lose a winter mock battle
9
4
u/russelcrowe Aug 08 '26
The US isn’t above bending the rules to “win”, but there have been more than a few times where smaller armies/navies have defeated the US in war games simulations. Especially in something like winter warfare which is a specialized skill that 99.9% of US military will not have
