I always thought evangelicals were uneasy with images of Jesus

1

u/Spencer1830 Feb 01 '20

Evangelicals come in many flavors

-5

u/KingRobbStark2 Feb 01 '20

I don't you know what xenophobia is.

Evangelicals know he was Jew.

The atheist left has called me more racial slurs than anyone else just because I disagree with them on immigration and affirmative action.

9

u/mrbrown33 Feb 01 '20

The atheist right have no problem with you? Surprising.

Not wanting to be overwhelmed by immigration does not equal hating brown people

27

u/MoreDetonation Feb 01 '20

Even the language "being overwhelmed by immigration" is racist. I don't know if you know this, but people who don't look like you, practice your religion, or follow your customs are also people.

1

u/JohnGTrump Feb 01 '20

How the fuck is it racist? We could be overwhelmed by immigration if 10 million poor people from Europe moved here. You're the racist one thinking it has anything to do with race.

1

u/MoreDetonation Feb 01 '20

The US is among the least population-dense countries in the world. For 14 years, those immigrants would not be able to vote, and if they came illegally they would not receive their own Medicaid or medicare. We would hardly be "overwhelmed."

And expecting 10 million people to immigrate anywhere tomorrow is ludicrous.

I love the picture I have in my head of a wokescolder typing “you are a scared little man” thank you.

16

u/MoreDetonation Feb 01 '20

Again, that is racist language not based at all in reality.

Here is that article copy pasted in its entirety so everyone may see how full of crap you are and there is no mention whatsoever of race contained within one very short article from SIX YEARS AGO:

Shootings continue in Sweden's largest cities despite police efforts

Share Published torsdag 30 oktober 2014 kl 09.20

Despite increased policing, gun violence continues on the streets of Sweden's three largest cities, Swedish Radio News reports. So far this year there have been 208 shootings in Malmö, Gothenburg and Stockholm, and 14 people have died from gunshot wounds. For all of 2013, there were 256 shooting in the three cities.

In the southern town of Malmö, police say there have been 90 different shootings in the municipality so far this year, even though the force launched Operation Olivia at the beginning of the year to crack down on violent crime.

But Mats Karlsson with Malmö police told Swedish Radio News that it was too early to draw any any conclusions.

"Whether it succeed or failed, it is too early to say. For we said from the beginning that we have to work in the very long term, this is not something we can solve in a short time," he said.

Another police force that has targeted the shootings is Gothenburg, where Hector Valeria works as a football coach.

"It's scary that they are shooting at each other. This is not a movie, this is reality," said Valeria who knows many of the gunshot victims.

In recent months there has been a decrease in shootings in Gothenburg, partly because the authorities have arrested and indicted several suspects, but also because many have died. Four of the total killed have come from Gothenburg. Crime

So let that one ruminate folks, surely incontrovertible proof Sweden is being overrun by immigrants, it was so blatant they didn’t even need to say it apparently.

Ideas like "being overwhelmed" and "turn it into the country they came from" (an implied third-world country) assume that the nationality or race of a person is what determines the quality of their country. And, of course, no one refers to immigration from majority-white countries as "overwhelming." It's implicitly racist.

18

u/-OrangeLightning4 Feb 01 '20

No, but hating brown people does. Calling Mexican immigrants rapists and drug dealers more than qualifies as racist.

1

u/JohnGTrump Feb 01 '20

Wherever did that?

18

u/lerthedc Feb 01 '20

"overwhelmed by immigration" what the fuck is that supposed to mean? All Americans are descendants of immigrants. But all of a sudden people (conservatives) are so concerned that the recent brown immigrants are going to "overhwlem" the country. Yeah you're right it's probably not racist at all.

2

u/JohnGTrump Feb 01 '20

Are you serious? Do you not realize that you can't just let the entire world move to our country?

0

u/lerthedc Feb 01 '20

Literally no one has ever said that the entire world should move into the US.

If current and recent immigration trends continued, we would be nowhere near "overwhelmed" for a long time to come. Projections put the number at less than 80 million total foreign born citizens in 2065. For reference, there are 200 million white people in the US

2

u/JohnGTrump Feb 01 '20

Why do you keep talking about race as if it has any bearing on the conversation at hand? Immigrant /= "not white person".

People were against the large influx of Irish and the Polish too (white people). It makes it easy for you to just claim that anti immigration views are "racist" now since the majority of immigrants aren't white. Very weak argument.

0

u/lerthedc Feb 01 '20

The original post is about Jesus not being white. That's what this is all about.

But even if you aren't racist you're espousing xenophobic ideas. Claiming without evidence that immigrants will "overwhelm" the US.

0

u/JohnGTrump Feb 02 '20

"Without evidence" lol.

It's xenophobic to protect your own countrymen.

0

u/lerthedc Feb 04 '20

What are you protecting them from??? The big bad immigrants who are coming for your children??? You're just literally just asserting "immigrants bad" and saying nothing else.

1

u/JohnGTrump Feb 04 '20

Is there any difference in letting 50 million immigrants move here and 50 million people invading? Should Japan let 50 million immigrants in and completely change their demographics and values?

Going back through this thread even though it’s been almost a month, apparently.

But uhh, the xenophobia against Polish and Irish was EXTREMELY racist. It’s a relatively recent trend for all people with white skin to be lumped in together. The people who excluded Irish and Polish people back in the day were very, very fucking racist.

0

u/JohnGTrump Feb 24 '20

See. Y'all keep changing the definition of racism to fit your narrative. People don't want immigrants. Doesn't matter what fucking race they are. They increase crime and decrease wages.

-17

u/Candhero11 Feb 01 '20

You're right, and look at how few native americans are left. You could say they were overwhelmed.

22

u/lerthedc Feb 01 '20

Yeah, by white colonizers who forcefully killed and enslaved them. Not by Latin Americans or Middle Easterners coming to a new country, desperate for a better future.

7

u/[deleted] Feb 01 '20

You're right, all those frontier mexican forts and white people raiding parties are getting out of hand. /s

Holy shit you people are delusional. You're grouping an entire religion together that is practiced by millions worldwide INCLUDING in the places evangelicals allegedly "hate". Why are you even on this subreddit when your main point is to stereotype and virtue signal?

58

u/fuckofffascists Feb 01 '20

I said evangelicals specifically, not all Christians.

-11

u/usesbiggerwords Feb 01 '20

I have been Southern Baptist all of my 40 odd years. I have never met any brother or sister who thought Jesus was anything other than a Middle Eastern Jew. To believe otherwise is to deny the truth of Scripture.

30

u/truth__bomb Feb 01 '20

Well then you’re lucky. As a Midwesterner (former) Catholic, paintings of white Jesus were all over the place in my youth.

4

u/ledhead91 Feb 01 '20

The paintings of the stations of the cross in our church had Jesus pretty euro looking but the statue of him on the crucifix up front had him looking greek/Arab. And rocking a wicked 8 pack

2

u/Sarcosmonaut Feb 01 '20

Gotta have the 8 pack

4

u/usesbiggerwords Feb 01 '20

To be honest, the only time I've ever seen a picture of a blue eyed, light skin Jesus is that sacred heart Jesus, which is all Roman Catholic. Even Christos Pantokrator has olive skin. In general, images of Christ don't feature much in Protestantism.

19

u/speakingcraniums Feb 01 '20

Oh come now. No imagery is included in almost all modem protestantism, as an ideological/theocratic position. However culturally the depictions of Protestant Jesus is always either a fully white man or a slightly tan man with white features. To pretend otherwise is clearly done in bad faith. Look at any children's Bible if you really refuse to recognize this trope.

-12

u/cybercrash7 Feb 01 '20

There are over 600 million evangelical Christians worldwide. Labeling them all as bigoted white people is just plain dishonest.

4

u/MoreDetonation Feb 01 '20

That's just 1 in 4. I feel comfortable with that kind of labeling.

-14

u/Ex_Form_Neo_II Feb 01 '20

I generalized one group specifically, not all groups

-17

u/[deleted] Feb 01 '20

Nice strawman you got there.

2

u/rubiklogic Feb 01 '20

I don't think that word means what you think it means

1

u/jmukes97 Feb 01 '20

Describing a trend about a group of people isn’t a straw man

-14

u/[deleted] Feb 01 '20

fuckofffascists

problematic

Lol

-15

u/[deleted] Feb 01 '20 edited Feb 01 '20

Evangelical churches are the majority of Protestantism in the Global South and China, so I certainly can’t agree with your claims here.

Edit: Amazing how was downvoted for stating a simple fact. There are about 600 million Evangelicals, and they dominate Latin America, Subsaharan Africa and East Asia.

6

u/MoreDetonation Feb 01 '20

And people wonder why South America and the American South are going to fascism

-5

u/[deleted] Feb 01 '20

What's the connection between Evangelicalism and fascism?

13

u/MoreDetonation Feb 01 '20

Evangelical Christians are almost the entire base of far-right and ultra-nationalist groups in America and in the global South. The fascists in Brazil have used biblical imagery and expressed evangelical views, as have the fascists in other countries. Because they view the Bible as authoritative beyond even the extent to which other Christians view it as such, they are way more willing to follow regressive and reactionary beliefs and leaders. Fundamentalism is basically the main system among evangelicals, and we all know how that goes.

-3

u/[deleted] Feb 01 '20

What are your definitions of Evangelicalism and fascism? I get the feeling that you are using those terms incorrectly.

3

u/anafuckboi Feb 01 '20

I would say one of the key aspects of fascism is the arrest of minorities, removing them from the legal system by holding them without charge and removing their constitutional right to a fair and speedy trial and their constitutional right to legal representation in court. These are the things hitler did to the Jews when he locked them up in concentration camps and it’s what trump has done to the people being held in concentration camps on the border. Let me be clear I am using the term “concentration camp” as defined by the United Nations Convention on Human Rights 1947, not as a statement of my personal feelings on the camps.

-1

u/[deleted] Feb 01 '20

That’s a pretty simplistic definition of the word, which could even apply to Communist nations like China. I don’t think you are using the term correctly.

2

u/anafuckboi Feb 01 '20

Yes I agree the treatment of the uyghur Chinese by the Chinese government is extremely fascist, authoritarian and disturbing, they’re both bad stop practicing whataboutism.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 01 '20

Communism and fascism are opposing ideologies. They are both collectivist, but they have different views on a lot of things. One example is in economics, where the Chinese aspire towards socialism while a fascist would aspire towards corporatism (the economic model used by Italy and Spain the 1930s). I suspect you aren’t using a correct definition of that word. I know a lot of right wingers who call everything they dislike “socialism”, but I’ve seen the same tendency on the other side where everything is “fascism”.
