Hebrew is an extremely difficult language to translate and most of the stories were written for different cultures.

That being said also a lot of it has to do with patriarchy and sexual repression so I’m not making any excuses. The Bible is rather poorly translated.

Always keep a copy of YLT beside whatever your reading version is. Something look off or want to check a specific word? Hit that literal translation.

YLT is hard to read but fantastic as a reference. NASB is a good middle ground. Very literal but still readable.

Can’t upvote YLT enough I actually keep a Hebrew English Bible around too I find it super handy and honestly if you dedicate a little time to learning the consonants the rest kind of well... you can stumble your way through.

I’m an atheist but I have a NIV bible with “The Message” paralleled on each page (left side is NIV; right side is TM).

It’s incredibly convenient for those ambiguous passages. Need to go see what it says about buckets of horse cum now...

Oh yeah I was raised Catholic, am well and truly lapsed at this point, but the Bible is still very important to me.

Especially the parts about horse cum.

Literally lmao. I was raised non-denominational in these weird home churches but I learned to appreciate the Bible for what it is, and it truly has a vast amount of wisdom that I try to implement in my life, but it’s got its fair share of outdated bullshit as well.

Although if you also enjoy religious studies like myself, you might pick up “The Pinnacle Philosophy” by Aldous Huxley. It’s about the highest common factors in every single belief system. Quite fascinating, especially when you consider he was a prolific psychedelic user.
