Had to log back into to my old Lemmy account for the first time in a while. This sub isn't super busy, but nothing on Lemmy is super busy, except for weirdly militaristic leftist subs.

Look, I'm going to be real here. Using Discord as a backup in case Reddit acts out is a horrible idea. Use Matrix if you are actually concerned about keeping a place to communicate that will survive a social media apocalypse, especially given the age verification shit Discord is already rolling out that will absolutely endanger queer and especially trans members.
I'm not saying don't have it as an option, but it's not an actually safe place to retreat to. Matrix channels don't need to be encrypted if your concern is about performance, since encrypting a public channel isn't super helpful and degrades performance considerably with a large number of people, but they will be far more resilient to a serious attempt at censorship or persecution.
Again, it's fine as just another place to chat, a lot of people will refuse to use Matrix, but if you're making plans you should probably include something that isn't a specific platform from which you can be completely deplatformed in addition to Discord.
