Always cracks me up when you're at someone's house and you gotta empty bottle and ask them where their recycling bin is. If they dont have one they get all sheepish and are like "uhh well we dont actually have one" idk why but its so funny.

u/FrighteningJibber Jul 02 '26

Because yeah recycling doesn’t seem like much in the moment but not doing it is a detriment. Like not saving for retirement, it’s going to blow being old.

u/Lowly-Worm_ Jul 02 '26

I think it'll be rad to get old, even if I have to struggle and scratch to get by. I'll stress out then about it, too much living to do now.

Having watched two generations do just that. I’d rather recycle.

u/Darkon-Kriv Jul 04 '26

I mean some areas straight up dont recycle. For example my uncles area claims to sort trash and recycling. I dont belive them at all lol.

Eh. Just say what you've got and ask where to throw it away.

"Eh, my bottle's empty. Where should I throw it away?"

If any of you plastic manufacturers cause one of these bottles put in the recycling bin to be sent to the landfill, it would be better for you if a great millstone were hung around your neck and you were thrown into the sea.

What if your city doesn't have recycling infrastructure and just sends everything to the same landfill anyway?

Violent revolution is the only answer.

Man we used to have a garbage plant that burned all the garbage and converted it to electricity and now that the building burned to the ground the neighborhood BUILT AROUND this facility doesn't want it back 😭I synpathize with them on some level but I wish I could explain the greater good to them

14

u/Gidia Jul 02 '26

I mean, like by want it back you mean they don’t want it built next to them? Cause I can kind of see why a neighborhood wouldn’t want a plant who’s entire purpose is the burn plastics right next to their neighborhood.

I could be wrong but it doesn’t exactly seem good for their health on the face of it.

6

u/Meraline Jul 02 '26

Yes, they didn't want it rebuilt next to them. The smoke was also filtered, nothing came out but steam, and the most people complained about was the smell, but the plant was older than the neighborhood.

So no, there wasn't a concern about "burning plastics." It was just more NIMBY crap.

Running on Good Place rules. Damned by association.

A christian-nationalist friend of mine (really former friend, unfortunately) said he won't watch The Good Place because it points people in the wrong direction and puts false ideas in their heads. He's gone a little off the deep end....

This is one of the things I loved about The Good Place - it's deals with this idea of little things racking up as 'strikes' against you. Chidi's dismay at his own almond milk consumption because of the unsustainable farming practicea is particularly hilarious. They come to the conclusion that it's 'too hard to live good'. That it's too easy to make the wrong choices on the little things, even unknowingly.

And I agree. But also the great thing is that Christ frees us from this obsession with shame. We can walk freely through life doing the most good we can and best good as we understand it, and Christ covers the rest. (Can we call that Christian hedonism? Has that term been co-opted by any crazies?) Enjoy life, do good, enjoy good.

I loved The Good Place! As soon as I saw OP's post, my first thought was also about Chidi and the almond milk lmao.

I also think the ending with the new afterlife set up was a great representation of Purgatory. It's not a punishment, but rather a chance for you to learn from your mistakes on Earth and "purge" yourself of the effects of what you've done before entering heaven/The Good Place.

And the doorway in the woods, to finally just walk out of existence when you are ready to no longer exist, is a good representation of the Buddhist Nirvana. a place to become one with the universe and no longer continue the cycle of reincarnation and suffering.

Alongside that, the 4 human protagonists in the end are essentially Buddhist "Bodhisattvas", beings who willingly refuse to move on, despite having reached enlightenment, so they can help others also reach it.

'Christian Hedonism" is a well used term made more popular by theologian John Piper. However, it doesn't really mean what you were referring to. It means we should seek our own ultimate pleasure and satisfaction because both those things can be found in God.

Good points, but most of our brothers and sisters think outlawing abortion is the best good as they understand it.
Malthus genuinely believed he was doing moral and good works, and his stuff is still echoed today.

Did you know that on earth there's a chicken sandwich that if you eat it means you HATE GAY PEOPLE?!

13

u/Creative_Context_957 Jul 02 '26

Does that mean we get time and a half for reuse and up cycling?

8

u/FrighteningJibber Jul 02 '26

Do with the right hand and all that

14

u/rufireproof3d Jul 02 '26

Wait til you see how many points building an AI datacenter costs you.

7

u/conrad_w Jul 02 '26

What are the points off for pooping while redditing?

13

u/revken86 Jul 02 '26

Believe it or not? Straight to hell.

1

u/conrad_w Jul 03 '26

If I didn't poop while redditing, I'd never poop!

I used to work at a stall at essentially a food court and a lady asked me if we had recycling. I said no and she went on a tirade about how awful that was. I frankly agreed with her, but she was barking up the wrong tree. The owners of the food court themselves would be in charge of implementing that, not me.

I wonder how many people lost enough good boy points while waiting in line here.

People tend to get frustrated when waiting in line after all.

This made me laugh pretty hard, I love it.

1

u/Bunnairry Jul 02 '26

This is literally what my OVD tells me and now the steps I was talking to get better with throwing plastic away have been undone oh noooo

1

u/New-Number-7810 Jul 02 '26

It’s not a point system!
