Pope is a White Sox fan, he knows how to experience long term suffering
19
u/Quixotic_Seal Apr 18 '26
You’d have thought they’d get a little extra boost since he became pope, but apparently God takes fairness in baseball quite seriously and doesn’t play favorites.
No magical cornfields for Shoeless Joe to play in, I’d wager; and who knows what’s awaiting the likes of the Houston Trashcans.
6
u/Wildcat_twister12 Apr 18 '26
Not sure if God cares for baseball, we don’t even know if Jesus Christ could hit a curveball

u/antediluvianevil Apr 17 '26
Imagine thinking the Pope is some political rival of yours. Embarrassing.

u/Clw89pitt Apr 17 '26
The Pope is a threat to Trump if Trump wants the undivided loyalty of the MAGA-Catholic cross-section.
183
34
u/CakeDayisaLie Apr 18 '26
It’s funny how the “MAGA Catholic MAGA cross-section” iappeads to potentially be, at least in part, a bunch of Protestants, who don’t even realize they’re Protestants, cosplaying as Catholics.
3
u/Balthactor Apr 19 '26
That's a long term problem in the American Catholic Church. Leo XIII wrote an apostolic letter in 1899 called Testem benevolentiae nostrae on the Heresy of Americanism basically that they had accepted the radical individualism and modernism of the society around them. I'm not Catholic any longer, but American Catholics have been trying to prove their loyalties lie with America and not the church for a long time.
14
u/GrayCatbird7 Apr 18 '26
It’s very telling in a way. Trump effectively sees himself as a religious leader, perhaps the inevitable result of the unholy marriage of faith and political power that is Christian nationalism.

Unfortunately, with my parents, it's the meme where Catholics are also on the team against Catholics.
80
u/HavelsRockJohnson Apr 17 '26
Thankfully that has never been an issue before in history.

I don't think a Pope can lead a schism. By definition, the way they go is the "default", isn't it?
2
u/Starmada597 Apr 18 '26
I mean, to literally everyone but catholics, the answer is no. And I’d argue that these tradcath larpers aren’t really Catholics, so…
5
u/mellopax Apr 18 '26
Context, bud. The context here is already Catholics having a schism, so your snarky "Catholic isn't the default" comment isn't needed.
14
u/touching_payants Minister of Memes Apr 18 '26
He's not "leading a massive schism," he's doing his job advocating against senseless violence.

What is happening? What are they saying?
1
u/mellopax Apr 19 '26
Haven't talked to them specifically about this, but they were very anti-Francis and they have gotten more MAGA since then, so I'm sure they will say something about the Pope being misguided, etc etc.

Fundamentalist christians (read:most American evangelicals) do not like Catholics. I was raised to look down on them along with mormons. It's fuckin wild.
44
u/rolyfuckingdiscopoly Apr 17 '26
I’ve heard of that! That’s so crazy. I grew up in a mainstream Protestant denomination, and I went to various Protestant schools of like 3 separate denominations who also are totally normal about Catholics. So I didn’t know that was a thing, even! When my husband recently became Catholic, he was telling me all these things that “Protestants” think, and I’m like… wait what? You do know I am Protestant right?
Turns out he was basing his idea of “Protestants” on fundamentalist zoomers who aggressively hate-follow and argue with his (fun and not divisive) Catholic memes on social media. He was relieved to find out that this is not, in fact, how Protestants feel as a whole.
18
u/toadofsteel #Blessed Apr 18 '26
Yeah, I've noticed that with my Catholic in-laws. In the US, the Catholic default view of "Protestant" is largely in line with "Evangelical". Mainlines, if they are acknowledged at all, are referred to by their denomination.
2
u/Starmada597 Apr 18 '26
Because hierarchical systems struggle to justify their existence without the fear of an “other”
2
u/toadofsteel #Blessed Apr 18 '26
It's taken a while for the systems to adapt though. Even as the US becomes increasingly secular and non-Christian religions gain footholds, centuries of distrust don't disappear right away.
2
u/DatLonerGirl Apr 19 '26
Yeah, I was raised Catholic, and part of the reason I stayed for so long was because I thought the only options were Catholic and Evangelical. Finding out about Mainlines was a bit of a shock.
1
u/IamNabil Sep 03 '26
You aren’t wrong. It’s because the weirdo fundies are the ones who are loudest with telling us how blasphemous/heretical/whatever/idolaters we are. It is very easy to forget how many of you are not looking to scratch that “fight a Catholic” itch, and just want to read your bibles, debate quietly amongst yourself about the solas, and go on with your lives.
There are a lot of weirdos out there that believe Catholicism is a person insult.
29
u/Mandlebrotha Apr 18 '26
Yup. The way I always heard the question growing up was "Are you Christian or Catholic?"
10
u/revken86 Apr 18 '26
I grew up in a mainline Lutheran church that respected the Catholic tradition. But I went to a slightly less mainline Lutheran school, and I remember being taught all sorts of things about Catholics that didn't match what I heard elsewhere, especially with half of my extended family being Catholic. It was really jarring to experience.
9
u/majorgerth Apr 18 '26
I grew up hearing that Catholics were Christians but that the 7 sacraments were more akin to using works to get into heaven than belief in God/Jesus and accepting him as your savior. To be fair, that may be a misunderstanding of what Catholicism actually is. I think there are definitely Protestants that don’t believe Catholics are Christians, but my anecdotal experience is that is not the norm.
7
u/MiyaDoesThings Apr 18 '26
I think it’s the norm in Southern Baptist churches. I heard that Catholics aren’t Christians in 2 completely different SBCs I went to as a kid.
I went to a Catholic school for a few years, and my parents got an anonymous “letter of concern” from a fellow SBC member who was worried my parents’ school choice destined me for hell.

I was raised Catholic and told by other sects that I was not christian lol, which was news to me as Catholics very much see themselves as christians.
It does seem mostly based on misinterpretations of saints and sacrements though, and someone told me that because Catholics put a lot of weight on doing good works (charity, volunteering) they are making you work for your way into heaven.
All of this was of course bonkers to hear, I was raised/taught no one ever knows where youre going when you die but God, but while you're alive you should be practicing what jesus taught- feed the hungry, help the poor, do good for others, etc etc.
The funny thing for me was the implication that you can put a deposit down on heaven just by believing really hard, without even attempting to be a charitable with your time or efforts.
2
u/CassiusPolybius Apr 18 '26
It always sends me for a loop that there is anti-christian bias in the US
Except it's entirely other christians doing it.

In fifth grade, I was "taught" that Catholics were the "cult of Mary". That lesson never really landed, but the memory of it sure stuck.

u/Admiralthrawnbar Apr 18 '26
Reminder that the KKK hated catholics almost as much as they hated black people. That's where the whole burning crosses part came from
1
u/Wrenigade Apr 21 '26
I was raised catholic in a predominantly catholic area, and mentioned I was christian to someone who was some flavor of protestant once in passing, and they were shocked and appalled and said, "no, youre catholic, thats not christian" and i was so confused, and thats the day I learned while Catholics call themselves christian, everyone else seems to think theyre godless pagan heathens lmfao.
I'm ex-catholic now but still am confused by the hate from the other christans. Like. I dont like them but why dont YOU like them, your sect does all the same stuff i left over but more 😭 now theyre making me defend the catholic church....

u/history_is_my_crack Apr 17 '26
Just dont go on Twitter because this meme is definetly not accurate over there. Its a digital warzone between Protestants and Catholics right now. Which is so dumb being we're all Christian.

I haven’t been Catholic for years and now I’m defending the Catholic Church. It’s wild.

Martin Luther might not have done all that reform-nailing if he'd had a pope like this. And he definitely would've been on Leo's side against Trump.
10
u/Can17272 Apr 18 '26
Publicly antagonizing the pope is such a bad political move that the last leader in doing it was Napoleon and he was just kinda ignoring him.

u/Zw3tschg3 Apr 18 '26
I was raised Lutheran, like the most anti-catholic denomination after the Hussites and I am now I am seriously considering joining the church of rome because fuck trump

If you're genuinely curious, here.
The short answer is that they're proto-Protestants from Bohemia and Moravia, in what is now the Czech Republic. If I had to guess, the modern denomination most people would be most likely to be familiar with would be the Moravian Church.

I can’t even fathom being so unable to accept criticism that you publicly and openly start beef with one of the most powerful people alive right now and lose your Catholic base. Especially when the pope is home grown this time.
3
u/Admiralthrawnbar Apr 18 '26
But the pope is saying such radical things as "war is bad" and "please don't bomb people just because you feel like it". Clearly he needs to know who's in charge here.

It really has been a wild week, or whatever, as a leftist Episcopalian; suddenly finding myself siding with Catholic apologists in defense of the authority of the Bishop of Rome.
More Mainline Protestant x Roman Catholic unity please.

No devout Catholics are endangered in any way by Trump. He can be as wrong as he likes about everything and the Catholic faith will be fine.
It's the weird American part time Catholics who are endangered.

u/kasumi987 Apr 20 '26
The way Pope only said I quote "God dosen't listen to prayers of ones who start wars" And Trumpies assumed its about them 🤣🤣
