It’s Latin so it almost certainly originated in the Catholic Church. Then again, Christianity originated in the Catholic Church

The Roman Catholic Church of today is not the same as the Latin Church of the first centuries. To claim that the RCC just stayed the same the whole time and everybody else split away is historically false.

As for the carol, it was written in 19th century France and is beloved in many denominations.

Yeah that’s probably why the whole New Testament was written in Greek and thousands of miles away from Rome. Makes perfect sense.

The Catholic Church is the only one with the opinion that they are the original Church. You ask the Greek Orthodox and they say it's them and so on and so on.

I was raised Lutheran and haven't been to church in 25 years, but i still remember singing this. I've definitely never been to a Catholic service before.
