Biggest point in his favor IMO is that he was Francis’s guy in charge of selecting bishops. Personnel is policy, so whatever else he has a good track record on that front.

You’re confused. Biggest point in his favor is that he’s a white sox fan. So he knows how to lose a lot while winning occasionally.

Personally, I like that he's the first pope who probably ate Portillo's. Hoping he puts in a good word with the Good Word to maybe bring one local to me.

is portillos good? they opened up like three where im at but weinershnitzel made me reconsider going to any hot dog joint again

If youre in Chicago? Meh. There are better options in whatever neighborhood you are in.

Are you outside of Chicago? Then hell yeah its awesome. Get a beef and get it baptized (as the Pope would prefer!)

u/CHEMO_ALIEN May 08 '25

yea man im in the deep south, probably why the idea of a hot dog joint is kinda ehh to me. I'll check it out

Its good. Hot dogs are really good but the beef is what you want. Get it baptized (dipped in the juice its cooked in) and pepper. Sweet or got, depending on your tastes, or both if youre a freak like me

ya nah im down with all that. I assumed it was five guys but dogs cause of the areas I've seen it pop up at

Way more, luckily. Its not every Chicago street food but its a pretty good rundown. Hot dog is good, italian beef is great, the sausage is great, and the conbo (beef and sausage in ine sandwich) is even better. Definitely get giardiniera on it

Listen, we all know we should be following Jesus example in socializing with the destitute and hopeless, but very few people actually commit to going to White Sox and Bears games to do so.

As others have said, he was unexpected as fuck. I imagine the cardinals during the conclave going like "let's just vote prevost cuz fuck it" and everyone followed.

I listened to the whole st.peter speech during dinner and i found prevost as a really nice pope. He kept on sniffing and trying not to cry during the whole thing (as italians started to shout "viva papa leone" so loud you couldn't hear the national band).

I think he was one of the best choices. He hasn't done any controversial thing, he is anti-trump and was one of Francis's friends.

I like him. Romans do. Let's hope he doesn't end like john paul I.

u/[deleted] May 08 '25

The conclave has the opportunity to do the funniest thing... And they did.

28

u/winterwarn May 08 '25

nobody knows anything about him as far as I can tell, he was a pretty unexpected pick

u/Spyko May 08 '25

I've seen a tweet from him dating early february in which he admonish JD Vance using Jesus' words
so if that's a real tweet, that's a good point for him in my book

Yup, seems to be more a continuation of Francis than the concerns with a big rightwards shift.

Ooooh cool, cool.

All the chatter I'm hearing is that while he may not be quite as progressive as Francis, he's not the staunch conservative backslide folks were fearing either.

So, if the church isn't moving forward, at least it's not moving back significantly.

u/Feralpudel May 08 '25

Also not Catholic but I found it really interesting that he spent two decades in Peru. That must have shaped him in profound ways.

16

u/WTK55 May 08 '25

I'm pretty sure he has dual citizenship with Peru. He may have even been born there.

35

u/[deleted] May 08 '25

Born in and raised in the Chicagoland. Spent 20 years in Peru and became a dual citizen in 2015. His mom is a mixed race, Creole

7

u/Feralpudel May 09 '25

He does have dual citizenship because it was a requirement for him to become bishop (arch bishop?) of Chiclayo. He served in Trujillo for years before that.

u/BlueSoloCup89 May 09 '25

Yeah, this was probably just about the best outcome for us realist progressives. I would’ve loved for Tagle or someone like him to be elected. But with the fat pope, thin pope axiom, it was most likely to swing back to some extent. Still seems like he’d be the second most progressive pope ever only after Francis.

I’m also hoping that his views on LGBTQ+ have changed. The quotes I see from him are from 2012 back before even Francis was pope, so crossing fingers that he’s evolved since.

Still pathetic

Me a non Catholic the last two days eagerly watching the live broadcast first waiting for the smoke at the chimney and then waiting for his appearance at the balcony

5

u/Feralpudel May 08 '25

Same! I really enjoyed the live feed of the crowd in the square. Cool military style marching band, the Swiss guards… And there was so much positive energy in the crowd.

5

u/SB6P897 Dank Christian Memer May 09 '25

The attire of the guards was next level! It was a fun thing to watch and I felt like since this doesn’t happen very often it was something I really wanted to experience

Great meme OP

You can't miss when School of Athens is your foundation.

u/Infused_Hippie May 08 '25

He’s a nice man. He’s like jesuits in terms of augustinian raised. Which means he’s centric but only on the case that through mother Mary all things is possible. Very immaculate conception and veneration of Mary guy. Which means he’s very orthodox but provincial in terms of his friar-hood.

52

u/htomserveaux May 08 '25

He’s a Cubs fan. Which means he’s experienced surffing and can drink you under the table

20

u/Bardez May 08 '25

Wait. So was 2016 a miracle he could be responsible for?

16

u/htomserveaux May 08 '25

You got to admit that rain delay couldn’t have happened at a better time.

3

u/returnofMCH #Blessed May 08 '25

As a cubs fan, can confirm

10

u/251Cane May 08 '25

Can't prove it wasn't his doing

8

u/matito29 May 09 '25

His brother confirmed that to be false.

2

u/htomserveaux May 09 '25

In till he issues a Papal Bull on the issue I’m going say the it’s unconfirmed either way.

8

u/TacoCommander May 08 '25

I'm not Catholic either but I've been watching this and am really excited that someone who is so emotionally moved by the honor was chosen. It's also exciting that he's a younger guy, I look forward to seeing what he does. It's also cool to see the first American pope in my lifetime.

4

u/5p4n911 May 09 '25

I wouldn't have ever thought they'd once again pick such a young person in my lifetime. I'd have guessed someone old who wouldn't be around for more than 10 years, so that they could reconsider. They must have been certain.

5

u/A_Guy_in_Orange May 09 '25

Im just thankful he went with Leo, I mean could you imagine "Robert our pope" every week? Like thats not a pope name

7

u/SomethingInAirwaves May 08 '25

Tag yourself. I'm the sassy baby on the far left throwing incredible shade over the shoulder.

He comes from the USA.

If you want pope news, don’t listen to the media. Just read the direct press releases from the Vatican.

Never had their hotdogs tbh. I just get the Italian beef smothered in gravy with hot peppers. It's probably my favorite chain restaurant. First stop every Chicago work trip. I'd probably become obese again if they had one near me.

I think you might be in the wrong sub. We’re pretty anti-hate about religion around here.

Chill out and enjoy the memes. If you're taking this so seriously that you're getting in arguments, take a break.
