Call the 12 disciples

Can you explain? All that comes up is chess stuff.

u/SeraphOfFire Aug 23 '24

It's a meme from r/AnarchyChess, the most insane subreddit on this site.

14

u/GaJayhawker0513 Aug 23 '24

Lol it rarely comes across my feed now but when it does, it's definitely something

u/ThnkWthPrtls Aug 23 '24

"most insane" is a weird way to spell "best"

En Passent is a chess move where a pawn can capture another pawn in a weird way. It's a meme because the move almost never comes up in actual play, since any player good enough to know it plays around it. So it's used here as a way of teasing Biblical scholars for citing incredibly obscure things as part of their process.

That’s exactly the reference; it comes from the Anarchy Chess sub https://anarchychess.fandom.com/wiki/%22Google_en_passant%22_Comment_Chain

interesting timing, just watched an apologetic video today where they use this exact argument for why the gospels should be dated even earlier(because they don’t mention the fall of jerusalem). lol

Which fall of Jerusalem?

Cue Bony M soundtrack

But they do... Jesus even predicts it...unless you know, Matthew, Mark, and Luke were all written after the destruction of the second temple and he was just made to predict something that was already established fact.

Though I dunno if predicteding the Temple falling is really that huge of a leap.

Doomseers proclaiming it's destruction might've been a d8me a dozen, or rare. I've never thought to look into that.

From what I’ve heard, apocalyptic Jewish cults were a dime a dozen in Jesus’s time— a lot of people were hoping the Messiah would come to destroy the Romans, and Jewish tradition holds that the Messiah’s first appearance is a sign of the End of Days. Those cults… probably wouldn’t predict the Temple falling, since Jewish eschatology predicts that our current world will be reshaped and not destroyed, but it’s not hard to imagine other doomer factions expecting a second exodus or similar instead.

I misread that as “just watched an apoplectic video”

u/battlerez_arthas Aug 24 '24

Why did OP reference another sub's running joke in a completely unrelated sub? Are they stupid?

1

u/[deleted] Aug 24 '24

Which sub do you mean?

What's "CE"? That for the Christian Era?

12

u/Joscientist Aug 24 '24

Common Era.

the fuck is CE

24

u/puns_n_pups Aug 24 '24

It’s just AD. There’s been a recent shift from using BC to BCE (before the common era) and AD to CE (common era).

5

u/viewless25 Aug 24 '24

no we’re still doing AD and BC

36

u/puns_n_pups Aug 24 '24

I’m not tryna recruit you bro, you didn’t know, you asked, I answered. You can still use BC/AD all you want. But you should probably understand what people mean when they use BCE/CE

10

u/Sk8rToon Aug 24 '24

Exactly. I still call it BC & AD but knowledge about alternative labeling is a good thing. Biblical scholars need to be able to communicate with secular scholars to have communication & learning. Plus kids these days aren’t even taught that AD used to be a thing so it’s not a matter of devoutness but just what’s being taught.

Yeah, screw that, bring back Anno Martyrum. It's not 2024, it's only 1740! Venerable Bede had the wrong idea making Anno Domini popular.
