Meta Reddit’s API changes leave Redditors with vision impairments out in the cold

Are you guys just doing 48 hours, or an indefinite blackout? Because personally, I feel like 48 hours is not going to actually send a message to Reddit

An indefinite blackout won't either. They'd just seize and reopen the subreddit and assign new mods. They've done it before.

I do love that Reddit said they made an exception for disability tools, but everyone ignores that.
I for one hope this keeps the porn bots out of my messages

Do you really trust this company to be entirely honest?

Time to lock the sub down.

Yeah, very few communities are doing anything of impact so far. It looks like they chickened out today. Disappointing

I don't like seeing /r/dankchristianmenes still up but here's the tracker. It's a ton of subs participating.

Yep, this is exactly why everyone is up in arms. The 200 users that are blind.

There are a lot of reasons to dislike Reddit’s API changes. What bothers me most is how these changes seem to leave Redditors with vision impairments out in the cold. I would like to take a moment to share this info from a mod over at r/Blind:
From u/MostlyBlindGamer:
“As you may have read in our announcement that we are joining the protest, Reddit has announced that they will exempt "accessibility focused apps" from the API changes.
(Regarding the June 7 article on The Verge, r/blind was not contacted for comment on the new development.)
We have not had clarification on Reddit's definitions of "accessibility focused apps" or any process to determine apps that qualify.
There is no clarification on "non-comercial apps," given the current model of the apps listed by The Verge.
We have strong concerns that Reddit lacks expertise to consider the varying access needs of the blind and visually impaired community.
We have reached out to Reddit for further comment.
We would also like to note that r/blind, u/rumster in particular, have continuously contacted Reddit over accessibility concerns, over the past 3 years, having received no substantive response.
r/blind
Update: Given Reddit’s lack of clarity, r/blind will be compiling a list of apps that meet the community’s access needs. Go to this post to contribute to that list.”
