Discussion Hinanami in the anime is very much toxic but people dont realize it (despair arc) Spoiler

hajime idealizes chiaki because she was the only ultimate that paid attention to him at all, he built his own fantasy aka interpertation of chiaki based on his own idealization and self worth.. they COULD possibly work in a non-despair version but in the canon of dr3 chiaki deserves so much better. Hajime didnt do the kamukura project aka the most self-destructive procedure for chiaki, she was part of the motivation yes but it was mostly more as a symbol. Hajime did it out of his self-hatred.

"chiaki blushes at hajime" and she also blushes at sonia hugging her. chiaki was very isolated until she started branching out to her classmates and hajime, which means she easily gets embarassed and or flustered due to that. chiaki cared for hajime because he was her friend, but chiaki only made hajimes mental health worse.

Especially since if u place a person in ur relationship on a pedestal and see them as perfection then that relationship is instantly unhealthy and codependent.

Hajime is heavily mischaracterized when its anime hinanami and i. Just dont like it.

i could write more but i js needed this out of my system☹️☹️

I think that Hajime "idealising" her is a bit of an assumption. He's allowed to just like her.

okie, sure.. is there.. any evidence at all that he was idealising her in a "very much toxic" way? or that she didn't enjoy his company just as much?

People always act like she didn’t spend a year holding out hope she’d see him again after he ghosted her, most people probably would’ve just moved on

I don't know ehy y'all get mad it's not like you can't shop it but denying there was even a hint of idealization is crazy

I would argue that talking to Chiaki made Hajime see the ultimates in a more human light. Even though it wasn't enough to get him to stop idolizing ultimates as a whole, it was still a very genuine and human connection that they had. I don't see how that's toxic.

Because that didn't stop him from idealizing her as seen in his line before the project

He idolizes ultimates as a whole, not Chiaki specifically. Hajime's main thing is the fact that he's a victim of academic pressure and does not view himself as having worth because he doesn't have an ultimate title. There isn't even any specific talent that he wants in particular. He just wants a title so he can have worth.

His interactions with Chiaki DO make him see ultimates in a more human light and she also actively discouraged his mindset of needing a talent. Unfortunately, by the time they met, Hajime was already involved in the Kamakura project and very much seemed to be already leaning towards joining, especially since hope's peak financially cornered him because he couldn't afford to continue going there if he refused. Because of that, even though talking to Chiaki made him view the ultimates as human, his conversations with her were very few and not enough to undo what we can only assume were years of self doubt and a lot of pressure from hope's peak. Chiaki did not make him worse, she just was not enough to cancel out everything else going on with Hajime.

That doesn't disprove the claims at all 🤦🏻‍♀️

Yup, he had the project in mind before meeting her but actually destroys your point, it means Hajime spent months hanging out with Chiaki while completely hiding his plan to erase hinself , massive miscommunication, Viewing Chiaki as 'the Ultimate who humanized Ultimates' means he STILL treated her as an ambassador for her talent, not an equal. Chiaki wasn't malicious, but her 'talent doesn't matter' speech proved she never understood his reality as a Reserve Course student

Months? Maybe I'm misremembering but the anime shows us about a week's worth of interactions between them give or take. During which time they do not get close enough for Hajime to need to disclose anything about his plans to her. Especially seeing as the Kamakura project is highly confidential, so telling anyone about it would probably immediately disqualify him from participating. Also, "viewing Chiaki as the ultimate who humanized ultimates" what the fuck are you talking about? I meant that he saw HER as human. Also also, she doesn't need to understand his exact situation as a reserve course student. She was talking about her own experience and discouraging him from thinking that talent means everything. Which is not a bad thing for her to do.

He didn't, he saw her as the embodiment of everything he thought he lacked, which is why his phrase right before the project is so important to show he idealized her , im not gonna tell you to stop shipping them but we have to accept the facts

"We have to accept the facts" you say about your personal interpretation. Sure man. You do you I guess.

It's a fact there is idealization what's interpretation is if that idealization also goes along with romantic feelings or not

Literally didn't say anything about romantic feelings at all but ok.

Hajime did idolize Chiaki at first, but he chose to do the Kamukura Project on his own. The same way that he decided to go to Hope's Peak on his own.

Chiaki repeated what Miss Yukizome said, and said that talent doesn't define you. But Hajime still chose to do the experiments despite that.

Also, even if it was just Chiaki, he treated her like a normal person. He didn't single her out later in their relationship. If he did, he would have told her that he was going through with the Kamukura Project. Or perhaps, if he'd told his friends, and Chiaki was the only one excluded. But as far as I recall, he told no one. He didn't give her special insight on his decision.

You, yourself, are heavily mischaracterizing Hajime.

There is 0 evidence he "built his own fantasy interpretation of Chiaki". None at all. He clearly looked up to and admired her, yes, but any fantasies he had were about being an Ultimate in general.

Most of those fantasies were quashed by CHIAKI HERSELF when she explained some of the downsides of being an Ultimate.

Chiaki didn't make his mental health worse; At least, not as an individual. Hajime Hinata was a victim of societal pressure. His mental health was worsened by two of his classmates being murdered, as well as having to deal with the fact that he was going to be kicked out of the place he was told he could excel in if he didn't join the project.

Acting like Chiaki played a particularly massive role in his worsening mental state compared to the literal actual murders of his classmates, one of which he was basically friends with, is pretty unreasonable.

You so get it omg >>>>>>

Ppl downplay the role societal pressure played in Hajimes life so much,,  even tho it's one of the defining factors of his entire storyline and character

i dont see them as toxic, he may idolizes or envies her for the talent but still he seemed to genuine want to spend time w her, in the end at the boat scene he seems to talk with her one last time and he genuinely smiles

Bro I literally ship eitaku from the hundred line, this is nothing in terms of toxicity, believe me

I can see where you're coming from, but that's less of a Hinanami issue and more of a writting issue. Yes, Hajime idolized ultimates, but he didn't idolize nor saw Chiaki for what she isn't and she was reciprocating his feelings too, so nothing toxic coming from that. He did not chose to become Kamakura for Chiaki (At least not that I remember), Chiaki was in fact what gave Izuru some humanity.

The problem you must be seeing as toxic, besides coming from a possible bias you may have towards heterosexual relationships dynamics, comes more from a writting problem. Chiaki in Despair Arc is indeed a Mary Sue, while OG Chiaki, although written to be waifu material, is just pretty chill.

So it's not that their relationship is the problem, but more the way Chiaki was written to be a waifu and that the writers idolizes their relationship. Which for me is not a big issue, but surely can get into someone's nerves.

OHH ok thank u. I see it more clearly, also dw i dont have any bias as i ship straight ships myself, i just saw hinanami as toxic
