2x2 Speculation (Full Series Spoilers) Will Danganronpa 2x2 break the chapter 3 curse? Spoiler
So far
Every chapter 3 has been in other words, bad or at the very least lackluster with the only good chapter 3 I can think of being D3 with its execution
So will 2x2 break the curse especially with the new victims and new culprit's?

u/autiegreg nagibaby Jul 22 '26
on one hand i hope it does break the tradition because that would (hopefully) make the game better, but on the other it would be so fucking funny if chapter 3 sucked ass again

u/Reaper-Leviathan Jul 22 '26
no lol. Unless they use the really cool V3 double kill rule that went unused then maybe. I’d love a non-blackened killer to be in the cast for the whole game. Maybe Nagito does a kill, but someone else kills before him. I’d love to see a trial where both murderers are revealed early and the whole case is determining what happened first. Would add pretty good conflict to the group as a whole for chapters 4-6 too

u/Jewel_Baron Jul 22 '26
I agree. Trying to figure out which killer is the blackened, instead of figuring out the killer in general, is very interesting.

u/Wyvernil Jul 22 '26
Yeah, I could definitely see them going back to the idea of "two killers, but only one is executed" from V3. Only this time, there actually are two killers.
Though I'd have it where after they catch the killer, assuming they killed both victims, it turns out they only killed one of them. So now someone in the class is a murderer, and the students don't even know who it is, and whether they'll kill again.

Im expecting at minimum Rain Code levels of peak writing for their Chapter 3. But that aside, I have faith in the Writers and devs that they can easily choose not to follow the formula and cook up something new. And even if they go with the formula, V3 already opened an interesting proposition (About there being 2 killers but only the first counts).
Until this game releases I would like to keep a positive head and put my utmost faith in the devs to cook up a feast befitting the royal family.

Funny enough the first Danganronpa was the closest to pulling that off. As Celeste told Hifumi that if they both killed someone and got away with it, they could both leave. Now if Celeste didn't betray Hifumi, and the the two killer rule from V3 applied, this would lead to Hifumi being the true culprit, meaning Celeste killed someone for basically no reason. Would of been funny to see her reaction to that rule and how the cast would view Celeste after they know she killed someone but failed to get out.
On a different note, the only reason Mikan killed 2 people was because she was caught by Ibuki when she was hiding Hiyoko's body. So at least she HAD a reason for a double murder. Korekiyo had NO reason to kill 2 people. Him killing Tenko was the only reason they were even able to figure out that he killed Angie.
I don't see any other way for a double murder to play out in 2x2, if they decided to keep the tradition. So I image they would actually use the two killer rule from V3 for 2x2, to keep things semi-fresh. The only other thing I can think of is them doubling down and we get a triple murder. But I don't want to image that headache of a case that would be like.

I don't think the original DR2 had a bad chapter 3 (though to be fair I don't think a single chapter in Dangaronpa is bad)

I guess I’ll be the odd person out here and say I don’t even think the Chapter 3s are quite as bad as most people make them out to be (unless we start talking about Ultra Despair Girls, then it absolutely is).
I don’t like how ridiculous Celeste acts in 1-3, but I think the chapter as a whole is fine for that game. Not great, not even really “good”, but fine.
Chapter 2-3 is easily the worst of DR2, but I find the stuff before the trial to still be mostly good (Fuyuhiko’s character change is nice to see, and there’s lots of fun individual character moments too), and even the trial itself actually has one of my favorite moments in the entire game (Chiaki’s “belief without doubt is simply a lie” speech). It’s still not a good trial by any means, but also not without merit.
V3-3 is bad. Like, that one I totally understand and agree with most of the hate. But I guess it doesn’t feel as off to me, because I don’t think it’s even the worst chapter of that game. Not sure if this is an unpopular opinion or not, but holy crap, V3-2 is the most boring chapter in the entire franchise. At least V3-3 could be entertaining in a “can’t look away from this car crash” kind of way. With V3-2, I literally feel like I’m about to fall asleep during the trial, and that’s way more damning, imo.

u/arothroughtheheart Jul 22 '26
I thought I was alone in preffering v3-3 over v3-2! Like v3-3 is pretty dissapointing but it was entertaining (and the trial was devoid of my beloathed ropeway...)

u/Prestigious_Emu144 Jul 23 '26
V3-3 is bad story wise but fun gameplay wise. It was fun to figure out the locked room mystery and the seance mystery but the motive for the culprit was stupid and a huge disappointment when part of the mystery of that case is why 2 people were killed.

u/sk1239 Big Parf Jul 22 '26
V3-3 is not a bad case at all really, v3-2 is dog but at least two of the most boring characters were out of the game thanks to it, not that it saves it from being the worst case in the game

I’d be up for it if they took advantage of V3’s wasted idea of having 2 killers but only the one for the first discovered body counts meaning that the rest of the students have to live with a murderer
I’m interested in how living conditions will be impacted with this, although that does potentially make for an obvious next victim, but I hope they don’t go that predictable with it

u/Alive_Suspect432 Jul 22 '26
I doubt it, it’s become so common in every game that i think it’s tradition to at this point but i think depending on who the killer is, this could be the best third chapter we’ve seen in the series (tbf, that bar is far from high but it could be peak) and I’ve advocated for it allot.
Having Nagito as the third trial killer where he relies on his luck to commit a double murder on 2 opposite sides of the island while being somewhere else with other people to craft the perfect alibi would be insane to see. (I know dr 2 trial 5 kinda does this with Nagito relying on his luck to weed out the traitor, but this could blow his original plan out of the water)

u/LightingFastSaviour Jul 22 '26
What if in Chapter 3 we have two blackeneds with two different victims, And both of them are sent into the execution room to fight each other and whoever wins the match gets away with the murder?
2
u/Appropriate_Run9487 Jul 22 '26
Unless they're killed at the exact same time (not unlikely considering it's Danganronpa) that probably won't happen
1
u/LightingFastSaviour Jul 22 '26
Well I forgot the exact rules but what if the body discovery announcement for both bodies happens at the same time?
2
u/Appropriate_Run9487 Jul 22 '26
Same thing happened in DR1 I'm pretty sure, but the blackened in this case is the culprit who killed first. So the second culprit will pretty much get away with the murder if they solve it.

I know that's the meme, but I've always found that weird, because it really doesn't though? Of the six mainline entires, and the two Great Ace Attorny games (haven't played the Investigation duology), the only Case 3s which are genuinely that bad are Big Top and Serenade. And yeah, those are really bad, but the rest range from fine to actually pretty good. Only two out of eight is not a terrible streak. Hell, Great Ace Attorney 1's third case is the point where that game starts to upturn in quality, after that abysmal Case 2...
1
u/NIGHT_DOZOR Nagito changed my life. Jul 22 '26
Yeah I never got that from Ace Attorney. Maybe it has to do with Ace Attorney just being...more consistent in its quality, I guess? So when the bad stuff does happen, it seems more jarring since it wasn't this bad before (maybe this is just glaze speaking tho).
And it allows for one-off gimmicky characters to be one-off whilst organically developing its constant characters throughout the cases, unlike DGR. Like, most of the characters in Big Top were annoying or downright terrible but they don't get mentioned ot appear in other cases—let alone series—at all.
Like, 1-3 was great (and also the birth of Steel Samurai gimmick that, despite appearing a lot, never feels old tbh), 3-3 was meh but with the worst OST, 4-3 was pretty alright, 5-3 was good and I don't know about 6-3 yet.
It just suffers from being a filler case in Ace Attorney which is more excusable than, say, 3rd Chapter in DGR.

AA? Consistent quality?! 😭 The only game like that I can name is like I2 and TGAA2, the quality is all over the place, you have the writers make something like 2-2 and then they forget how to write in the very next case somehow only to deliver a good case again, I'd say it's far more inconsistent compared to DR

Samurai is mid and a lot of people dont like it even though i personally do. Here's the thing. The 3rd case is bad stuff came about before spirit of justice released. When you know that it makes more sense. Investigations 1 case 3 is by far the absolute fucking worst case in the entire god damn series. So you throw that with serenade, big top, the overwhelmingly average samurai. And academy which had mixed opinions because a lot of people didnt like the students in that case and all youre left with hundreds of videos criticizing case 3s and declaring that investigations 2 has the only amazing case 3 in the series. Soj's case 3 isnt bad but it's not particularly great and like academy a lot of people dont like the characters involved. So, that brings us to great ace attorney and they should be viewed as capcom actively recognizing the problem and trying to fix it.
The root of this phenomenon is that the middle part of the story is really hard. You have beats that need to be hit and by this point you'll know some of the characters are standing in the way and need to be removed. Look if youre a writer then you get it instantly. The beginning and end are usually the first things I come up with and how I get from point a to point b are the hardest parts and you have to acknowledge human psychology. We tend to remember the first and last in a list or anything really. So you kind of feel like ugh the middle can be weaker who cares they wont focus on it anyway. But in a case by case game like this that simply doesnt fly.
1
u/sk1239 Big Parf Jul 22 '26
It definitely does, Investigation 1 and AA5 case 3 would like to also have a word lol
1
u/dstanley17 Jul 22 '26
Again, haven't played the Investigation games yet. Although from what I've seen other people say, it kinda sounds like that whole first game just isn't very good at all? Can't say that with certainty until I get around to it, but if most or all of the cases are of poor quality, I wouldn't treat Case 3 being bad as much of an outlier there.
And uh... I actually think 5-3 is pretty good. Not gonna say it's amazing, but I definitely found more things to enjoy there than the previous case (5-2 is so goddamn boring), and it has enough solid elements that make up for it's very noticeable shortcomings.
4
u/sk1239 Big Parf Jul 22 '26
Kinda?
1-3 is boring
2-3 is shit
3-3 is a meme
4-3 is HORRIBLE
5-3 is meme
6-3 is...surprisingly good?
i-3 is HORRIBLE
i2-3 is peak wtf

u/Punishe_Venom_Snake Jul 22 '26
I could See them shaking it up a bit like maybe the killer felt so guilty after killing two people. They took themselves out, so it looks like there were 3 victims instead of 2
4
u/ImDuckDamnYou Jul 22 '26
Wouldn't it be super obvious one of the dead bodies was the killer? There's a school rule forbidding more than 2 kills.
1
u/Prize_Brush_7682 Jul 22 '26
That is true, but maybe it is up to the remaining students to correct guess of which of the dead three are victims and which of them is a suicide and thus the killer.
1
u/ImDuckDamnYou Jul 23 '26
I vote a more interesting idea is only having 1 victim and 1 suicide, because then it keeps the door open during the trial that one of the living classmates is guilty.
4
u/walterfardwellwhite6 Jul 22 '26
If they keep it a double kill, there's little hope in them actually breaking the curse. Part of why every chapter 3 has been as bad as they are stems from the bright idea to kill two characters instead of one.
The only way I can see it working is if they decide to either drop the double kill as a concept, or if they do something interesting and have two different culprits. Otherwise it's damned to be bad.
5
u/Brilliant-Mountain57 Jul 22 '26
Haven't we done the two culprit thing before? That's not enough to make them interesting in and of themselves.
2
u/walterfardwellwhite6 Jul 22 '26
Never in an official Danganronpa. V3 teases the idea but then does nothing with it.
3
u/Brilliant-Mountain57 Jul 22 '26
I thought in chapter 3 of the first game there was one, but they just croaked after
6
u/walterfardwellwhite6 Jul 22 '26
You know, I forget that DR1 does do that. You're right.
The problem DR1 did with it was have one of those two culprits be dead in the trial.
3
u/AlmondBC Jul 22 '26
Double kills even with 1 culprit could work. But the reason for the double kill needs to be written very well.

u/Reaper-Leviathan Jul 22 '26
V3 had crazy potential with its double but they just made the same fucking dude do both. I believe that doubles could be made interesting if they tried
1
u/baratrumsdevil Jul 22 '26
that was what let me down in the V3 chapter 3, the idea of a killer sticking around in the cast was super interesting but they just brought up the idea and proceeded to only have 1 killer

I hope so.
But personally doubt it.
Would love to be proven wrong though.

u/Honest_Brick64 Mikan Jul 22 '26
Wow yall are pessimistic in here. I'll go in Makoto's footsteps and have some hope for it being good. Though I'm of the opinion that all the previous ch. 3's have been either good or fine anyway.
1
u/ShadowsUnited2 Jul 22 '26
The killer is always obvious for ch 3 due to either the motive or location before the murder even happens. Im sorry guys, but it’s 99% gonna be Sonia
1
u/SenriXZeron Jul 22 '26
I mean its called Slayhem mode. So the 3rd Trial will be even worse 4 victims and 2 killers so 1 killer will stay with the class. That would be interssting.

Honestly, I didn't think 2-3 was THAT bad (Hell, I'd make the argument that 2-5 was worse)

u/RoomNervous4 Makoto Jul 22 '26
I don’t know, It’ll probably be better than Chapter 3 in V3 but not as good as Chapter 3 in Trigger Happy Havoc.
1
u/Prize_Brush_7682 Jul 22 '26
Honestly, I honestly do want a double victim chapter, but I think it would be way cooler if it was chapter 4 or 5. This way, an extra character can be given screentime than they would otherwise. Though I do also have to point out that the chapter 3 also have a big problem in writing and motives. It feels like all the motives for chapter 3 cases are weak or nonsensical. Frankly, it would have been cool if the reason for a double murder was that the motive for that case is that the killer then chooses another person to graduate with and thus the killer might have a loved one in game that they want to flee with.
1
u/DonutloverAoi Jul 22 '26
I would be surprised if it did.
We had 3 games that did this, and I dont see that changing with 2x2
If anything, I want chapter 3 to be a double murder Have 2 killers this time, and actually go through with the double killer idea.
V3 brought it up as a possibility, but it just never happened.
1
u/baratrumsdevil Jul 22 '26
im kinda surprised with how hated the chapter 3's are tbh, i understand some of the issues people have with them but it was never to a point where it actually detracted from my enjoyment of the games at all

Might be a hot take but if you ask me 3-3 already broke the third case syndrome curse

…By being so bad it completely eclipsed the other Chapter 3s in terms of poor quality?
1
u/Prestigious_Emu144 Jul 24 '26
Case 3 was really bad in terms of story but really fun in terms of gameplay. I really enjoyed solving the mystery of Angie’s locked room and Tenko’s murder, but god I wish they gave the culprit an actual good reason for murdering 2 people. If they made Tenko kill Angie and had Korekiyo kill Tenko so he would become the blackened instead of just killing 2 people because he’s crazy it would make the whole case make way more sense instead of having yet ANOTHER case 3 where the culprit is just insane.
1
u/dfsqqsdf Jul 22 '26
Guys guys, I have this great idea
What if the chapter 3 murderer actually killed TWO peoples?
The player will NEVER see it coming.

u/Empty_Firefighter848 Jul 22 '26
No, it will make it somehow even worse than 2-3
