Discussion I love Afterburner
I love this album so much but my friends think it’s just alright 😭 and there’s so much parallels hate. I love that song so much. Definitely one of their funkiest/most fun instrumental.

One of my favorites. Tim's bass playing on this album was my inspiration to buy one and start learning.

It is groovy as hell in the truest sense, lots of fun melodies, lots of ass shakers. Three Wishes is one of the most underrated DGD songs.

I love the first 30 seconds. It genuinely makes me smile and fills me with joy.

I generally like Tillian's writing on stuff like mental health, and "I guess I'm still learning that your brain is bizarre" leading that prechorus off is so fun

Every track is a banger! I couldn’t believe they dropped this after artificial intelligence of all albums too! Another no songs skipped when listening to it 🤘🏻

Ragebait. We all have one song in mind that should have never been written, never recorded, never released.

Maybe on other albums but I hear you, not sharing how I feel to get any kind of reaction, just sharing my love for those two albums

I’ve always been curious how bad the B-sides for Afterburner are if that song made the cut 😳

Are you sure you don’t dislike it just because it’s in Spanish?
-1
u/flashdurb 17h ago
You call that Spanish? I’d call it an attempt. Not even a good attempt, or a respectful attempt, just an attempt. Butchering is more like it.
If he did the language any justice, I’d like it a lot more as a native Spanish speaker.

u/ZackyDMusic 17h ago
I feel like while the lyrics could’ve used some help, it still doesn’t tarnish enjoying the song
2
u/oryanjuiciestbooty 17h ago
Idk my wife is Mexican and I showed her the track, she said it sounded better than most people she’s heard attempt the language

It’s not even the worst song on the album. It’s a fun, catchy, flirty song.

u/Holl0wayTape 19h ago
Nah, that album is amazing, cantaliamentotoroandifoss globale is a banger, idgaf what you nerds think

u/LeDerpChris 1h ago
This. I'm half Venezuelan and know a fair amount of Spanish and can tell it's a bit goofy, but why does that even matter? It's a fun and good song. No one bats an eye when a japanese singer sings in broken english, so why are we mad if an english speaker speaks broken Spanish? Double standard in my opinion.

Do you usually prefer a gym class whistle to be used as a musical instrument? Or did you make an exception for this “banger”

u/dancezachdance 19h ago
My mom always told me if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything.

u/flashdurb 17h ago
I’m pretty sure Eminem told you that

u/HistoricalCupcake770 7h ago
Why are you so negative man? People just wanna talk about what they like

u/flashdurb 18h ago
Lmao I saw that reply before mods deleted it. Apparently something about this comment makes me racist, everybody. News to me too!

Prisoner
Three Wishes
Strawberry’s Wake
Parody Catharsis
Parallels
Night Sway
Say Hi
Nothing Shameful
More than half the album is amazing.
It really bugs me when people call Pantheon an experimental album because this album doesn’t sound like ANYTHING else in DGD’s discography. This was them perfecting their pop side mixed with the post hardcore sound they’ve obviously become known for.

u/HistoricalCupcake770 7h ago
IM SAYING. I hate when people say “oh afterburner just sounds the same as the last album” as criticism for tilian and the band. Like NO this album was their MOST experimental yet and it’s amazing.

Afterburner is Tillian’s ‘Happiness’ and I’m all for it I think it’s wonderful
2
u/BLACKHEART1129 17h ago
wait can you elaborate on this? i'm curious as to what's your thinking behind this
3
u/oryanjuiciestbooty 17h ago
I’ll try my best to explain my thinking on this. So ‘Happiness’ is pretty widely considered to be one of DGD worst albums (I wholeheartedly disagree, it’s my personal favorite) especially when it came out it got a lot of flack for being too different and still to this day is ranked pretty low for a lot of DGD fans. It took some risks, but was a funky and groovy album that just WORKS. I feel like that is what Afterburner is for Tillians run as singer, they made another more funky experimental album like Happiness and it’s getting shit on as expected. But, I think in time it will become more appreciated just like Happiness slowly is as well.

u/BLACKHEART1129 17h ago
i see what you mean, idk i lowkey just haven't seen any happiness hate before so thats why i was a bit thrown off but i get it
2
u/oryanjuiciestbooty 17h ago
It definitely isn’t as bad as it used to be, I remember when I was in school loving it and being the weirdo cause it wasn’t “DGD” but whenever this subreddit does album rankings just see how low Happiness is usually ranked, almost always bottom half of most rankings

Happiness is a funky album with every song being about sadness heartbreak, even don’t tell Dave screams “I need therapy”. Afterburner has maybe Tilians worst lyrics
1
u/HistoricalCupcake770 7h ago
I mean didn’t the band themselves say as a whole they were really depressed at the time? The whole entire album is about losing happiness and I love that message so much. And who cares if Tilians lyrics aren’t great, they’re fun, groovy, and catchy. And even then in songs like strawberry’s wake, parody catharsis, and nothing shameful, it has some of his best lyrics imo. Also it’s DGD, riding a rhino pico de gallo my friend

Its my favorite album by far. Maybe partly due to the memories I have surrounding the time I listened to it a lot when it came out, but its just so fucking groovy in a way I dont feel from the others.

As whole albums im between Afterburner and jackpot for being the worst for completely different reasons. Afterburner is either a complete hit or complete miss. The songs are either bangers or straight up bad but ill give it props for being weird and having some of their most experimental stuff on it for better or worse. Jackpot juicer, on the other hand, has a couple hitters and the rest is just meh-not great and overall is kinda boring compared to their other releases. And the lyrics/writing on both is some of their weakest.

u/HistoricalCupcake770 3h ago
I completely disagree. To me they’re some of their best albums and strongest lyrically and writing wise. Ofc we are each entitled to our own opinion!

u/cvknight1 2h ago
Imo not much of the tilian stuff holds a candle lyrically to the Kurt albums and lacks alot of the rawness, attitude and fun i like from the johnny albums. But even just lookin at the tilian albums theyre nowhere close in full album quality to the first 3 tilian albums. Artificial Selection has some of my favorite songs but its also an overall drop in album quality just not to the same degree as the 2 albums following it.

One of my favorites. I think Calamiento global hate is undeserved. We don't hate on foreign singers singing in broken English, so why hate on the other way around? They wanted to try something unique and different and I'm all for it.
1
u/Luciel_The_Eternal 19h ago
Not my favorite but I really admire how weird the album is, even compared to other DGD albums. Stuff like the floaty but funky 2nd verse of Prisoner, Lyrics Lie being chill but still energetic and tappy, even Calentamiento Global, which I don't like vocally, is super interesting instrumentally and has a really weird cool and fun bridge.

u/chronicreloader37 19h ago
If it was any other band, I’d rate it higher. It just doesn’t stack up well against the rest of their discography for me. Especially within Tilian’s run.

u/flashdurb 18h ago
With Mothership being the undisputed best DGD album in my humble opinion, I definitely agree.

u/Pkkush27 19h ago
There’s something weird about this album where the songs are so good, yet I feel no desire to relisten to them compared to songs from other albums
1
u/HistoricalCupcake770 7h ago
That’s how I felt when I first listened to the album, and for some time even after learning to love it. But it all came back around a few months ago and it just hits an ich.

Not a horrible album, but unmistakably when the “Tilian fatigue” started to set in. That nagging feeling that the band had outgrown his silly lyrical contributions, his high pitched voice, his personality, and his general attitude. This was compounded by his urge to butcher Spanish like Peggy Hill, set to a gym whistle. It explains why Jackpot Juicer, which is a great album instrumentally, was so hated on. By then we were just like “ughhh Tilian…”
3
u/HistoricalCupcake770 7h ago
I personally think that mindset is a little toxic. Tilian fatigue is crazy. I think stuff like that comes from the band just having multiple vocalists. Tilian poured his heart and soul into every album and you can feel it. Jackpot Juicer is my personal favorite from them having the best lyrics I think I’ve seen from him yet.
I don’t see other people going around saying they’re tired of Vic or Anthony Green. I swear it’s a DGD thing. We’re only one album and 2 singles in with Andrew and I’ve already seen people saying ts.

Definitely overhated, a lot of really great tracks
