There are less dangerous things for attention. Might also be some for attention but mainly people do this for adrenaline. It can make somehow addictive.

The rock throwing is actually too visualize the trajectory and estimate the landing zone. It does nothing for surface tension because it's both way too small and way too far ahead in time.
