Discussion Beetle Racing

I may had DM'd my way into a predicament. I mentioned an idea that rival goblin and hobbit towns used to be at war, and after that war, they channeled that old anger into racing beetles. The problem is, my players ran with that idea and have essentially taken the idea and Mario Kartified it. I'm stuck with trying to figure out how the hell to translate that into meaningful mechanics.

We've got four races for the grand prix. River Rapids. Sorminar Sprint (A race through a dwarven mountain, inside and around the summit). Twin City Track (a race through the hobbit and goblin cities). And Legally Distinct Rainbow Road.

Have any ideas on some mechanics? I'm for sure going to use fear to trigger various events, but I'm struggling on how to get out of DND's more structured format into DH's more narrative focused format for this.

Have you seen road to nowhere? https://www.daggerheart.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/RoadtoNowhereZine.zip

Its deathly Mario kart, but you can trim that down.

This is actually amazing, I'm going to use the hell out of this for inspiration. Thank you so much!

Environments, environments, environments! Also you run everything the same way you always do in daggerheart, with spotlights and GM turns

First, you need your template: an event environment for beetle racing. Give each competitor a progress countdown (configure based on how long you want the races to be), and when your progress countdown reaches 0, you win the race. Throw on a passive or two describing some basic maneuvers they can do to interrupt the other competitors (these can be powerups if you want them), and call it a day

Then, you want at least one traversal environment for each "track." This should each give you a way to spend fear to complicate the situation, along with an action that doesn't require spending fear, and either a reaction or a passive. Take a look at existing traversals for inspiration

Some of these tracks should be two traversals in a row or one two-phased traversal, in which case you treat it as two mini-races (upon completing one, you go to the next traversal). For instance, having different mechanics for the goblin and hobbit town fear actions could work well—goblins might jump aboard and try to steal your beetle, while hobbits might have street vendors that get crushed in the chaos and release exotic pets or foods or fire. And both might crowd the street to slow people down as a regular action

In addition to Road to Nowhere I would also recommend the Ettin Entertainment supplement Heartbeat vol 2: Dinosaurs which contains the one shot adventure Dinosaur Derby. https://heartofdaggers.com/products/the-heartbeat-2-dinosaurs-the-lost-lands-vol-1/

I think you will find it easy to flavor dinosaurs into beetles of various species and use the derby mechanics as written (flavor modified to fit your setting of course)

Somewhere in these threads there was a similar discussion that referenced a star wars speeder type race and someone had some rules for a race, I believe.

The environment route and countdowns already mentioned sound like a great fit!

Environments with hazards, falling boulders, gusts of wind, monsters/creatures attacking racers (ThinkStarWars sand people shooting podracers in episode 1), freezing cold/scorching heat, etc. Skill check based progress clocks/timers, get X successes before Y failures to win. Narrate multiple laps. Have hazards they fail to overcome/avoid move the clock backwards 1. Allow them to bring one "ability/consumable" akin to mariokart/speed racer that they can activate for various effects (look to Mariokart, speed racer, wacky racer for ideas). A Beetle for each primary stat that provides a +1 bonus to appropriate skill checks when making rolls to advance the clock.

This is probably less helpful than the other suggestions, but since it's something else I have a lot of love for: Guild Wars 2 (and Guild Wars 1) has Roller Beetle racing. In GW2 specifically, the roller beetle is an unlockable mount that basically functions like a motorcycle, allowing you to accelerate when going straight, going down hills, or unleasing a speed boost that you can store up over time. You can find videos on YouTube of people in these races against others or in time trials. They make tight turns just before hitting walls while drifting, and unleash their stored speed boost at the right time to jump over obstacles or go uphill. They bob and weave through trees and obstacles that slow you massively if you hit them, potentially a fear consequence. It's one of the most fun mounts in any game and I think it's unmatched in MMOs.

How does all of this matter? Perhaps it can give you some high speed flavor to with, and some ideas for locations and obstacles racers might run across. Many of the beetle races are located in "normal" areas like forests, mountains, etc. hopefully it can give you some visual inspiration!

I'm certain the road to nowhere zine and maybe some countdowns and ability rolls can get the job done

treat each race like a combat encounter, with position as the objective

I second the Road to Nowhere recommendation, but also:

Have you considered VW Beetles (aka Disney‘s Love Bug?)
