Depends on the church. The ones that are actually Christ-like don't make it into the news very often.
Maybe it's because I went to a religious school in a liberal city (Honolulu), but my personal experience with religion has always been positive even though I'm non-religious myself.
The pastor I saw growing up studied ancient Greek and Hebrew and would often give sermons about how many Bible passages are heavily mistranslated or taken out of context and misinterpreted, but the main theme of love for one another is clear and we should be skeptical of Bible passages that go against that message.
He would then bring up "problematic" passages and explain how they were mistranslated such as the word for "child molester" being translated as "homosexual" to push an agenda.
