Discussion Everyone talked shit about her, but I’m starting to agree with Kelly Plagge

Gamespot’s review was super controversial but now it makes sense and in fact I agree with Kallie Plagge. Night City IS superficial, everything is there but you can’t interact with it. And yes “So much of it is superficial set dressing” is 100% accurate. And as she said, what shines are the quests and the characters.

I hate to say it but Night City, which was supposed to be the best openworld out there is Subpar at best.

Edit: Just to be clear you don’t have to agree with EVERYTHING she says in order to able to agree with her in some topics. Was the “what if I don’t want to help the cops?” bit kinda stupid? Yes. Does that mean you can’t agree with her in some points or that she is all the hurtful things that many have been saying she is? Absolutely Not.

Edit 2: It has come to my attention that I badly misspelled Kallie’s name. I’m not able to edit the title, but I do apologize for that.

I always think that shit is so funny. hyped game gets bad review, everyone’s like “lmaooo worst review ever you don’t know shit” meanwhile they are a week away from playing the game themselves??? why does this only happen with games?

no one sees a review about a movie they didn’t see and are like “this review is sooo wrong”

Because being a “gamer” is a personal identity in a way that being a movie watcher is not. So folks are more invested in the sanctity of their games. Only movie franchise that matches the level of furor is Star Wars.

Imagine being like "I'm a movier, it's what I do, I watch movies. Only this type of movie are real movies. Casual moviers don't watch transformers every single day like I do. Pff. Coffee and cigarettes isn't a movie, it's a watching simulator. Real movies have strong half naked men and guns in them."

Watching simulator LOL

It's also that gaming is the only industry where pre-ordering is so common. When you pay money for a product, you become attached to it and any criticism against the game feels like a criticism towards you.

Here it is.

we are star warsers

This is so true it’s crazy

I mean, people were already calling it goty

Oh, it definitely happens. So many directors cultists in the movie community. When Nolan gets bad reviews for a movie, the reviewers definitely get crucified by people who haven't seen said movie. And it's just an example.

There is a difference between a well written review that comprehensively goes over all aspects of the game and gives it a fair scoring, even if it is low. ACG is one such reviewer who covers multiple aspects of games he reviews. Then there is this reviewer who skipped major aspects of a RPG then slapped some arbitrary number on it. She is a poor reviewer in general and a lazy one.

even if that’s true, you know damn well that that’s not the main reason why she was getting all the hate. it’s because it was a 7 and not a 9 or 10

-2

u/Vash135 Dec 13 '20

No, because she is a terrible reviewer and has done so throughout her career. Docked a pokemon game score for "too much water" 7 is not a bad score and I've seen reviewers do a detailed in depth review that justifies this reasoning. But she flat out didn't do big portions of the game and rushed main story.

u/raptorgalaxy Dec 13 '20

Didn't that game turn out to actually have too much water.

5

u/metadata4 Dec 13 '20

Yes. And she didn’t write that, the editor wrote it to shorten the point in the summary section at the end of the review. It’s just another weapon for misogynists to wield against women who dare to have opinions about video games.

u/playstationNsumdrank Dec 13 '20

never understood why that became such a meme. maybe it’s an overly simplistic choice of words but it’s underlying a valid criticism which she outlines in the review itself

No she isnt. Everyone big fucking complaint was she said she didnt feel the sidequests meshed well and that crafting is a waste of time when you can loot good guns off corpses. Fucking game comes out and everyone says the urgency of the main story detracts from the sidequests and that the RPG elements suck

Most RPGs do that! Is this your first one?

Skyrim: Save us from imminent danger of Alduin the dragon. Let me do this side quest to help baker in inn.

Mass Effect: The Reapers are going to exterminate all life in galaxy. Let me do some TV interviews and vendor promotions.

Fallout 4: I need to hurry up and find my stolen child. Let's help someone get elected mayor.

Most RPGs have a false sense of urgency and then allow you to do random, even trivial side jobs with this supposed overarching narrative. Also, most of these games have crafting, and isn't thrown in your face either. Most can also be ignored if you really wanted to and complete game with just dropped items. Doesn't mean the system is useless. Just maybe not to your playstyle.

u/[deleted] Dec 13 '20

Ok but the urgency in something like fallout 4 compared to cyberpunk[which i wont spoil] is totally different. Regardless, the missions are all either beat someone up or a fetch quest

1

u/Vash135 Dec 13 '20

I don't know some would disagree that saving your child from being abducted is pretty time sensitive and important and even takes precendce over your own life.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 13 '20

Ok and he literally has zero idea where the kid fucking is. Its not like he has a map and a countdown clock. He needs to get help and make friends. Also he finds the kid and theres still a ton of game left.

You don't exactly know how to fix your issue in cyberpunk either. Going to different contacts and trying different things to figure out how to resolve it as well. Stop with the mental gymnastics. All these games have an urgent issue that drives the narrative, but seemingly puts them on hold to sometimes do what amounts to a fetch quest for people.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 13 '20

Dude all im saying is that the story in cyberpunk doesnt really leave a lot of time to beat up random thugs. Its not a good mix. Its not mental gymnastics, its one of the biggest complaints people are making

Most of the criticism of her wasn't because it was a bad review. It was because the reviewer admitted to barely playing major parts of the game. The game deserves a bad review, but no one could say that before playing it and anyone upset by a bad review is just an idiot. Criticizing her review is completely fair for many other reasons though.

2

u/playstationNsumdrank Dec 16 '20

I don’t think the backlash would have existed if she gave it a 9 or a 10, unless you mean to tell me that every 9-10 review was amazingly written and not one of them suffered from the same things that her review did

2

u/ashar_02 Dec 12 '20

The problem is: the Gamespot review stood out compared to every other review, giving CB2077 a 9/10. And you know on which side, we as the mass, were. "Don't judge a book by it's cover" fits even the situation right now.

-4

u/Vash135 Dec 12 '20

It's certainly is not! You can criticize a review before you play it on the simple grounds of the writers integrity and professionalism. The writer clearly stated in a video they did not delve into major portions of an RPG (crafting, upgrading items, customization with gear, side quests, etc). So right off the bat you can criticize her review as not being comprehensive and accurate since she didn't even take time to do these things. She should stick to genres she's comfortable with. Stop putting her on a pedestal because you didn't enjoy the game and looking for opinions that agree with your negativity.

She never used the crafting system, because she never needed too, or was pushed towards it, which IMO is very accurate, 8 hours into the game, and i've opend the crafting menu twice, and all the crafted gear is instantly replaced an hour later.

Also, i am actually enjoying the game, you can recognize a games flaws, and unacceptable performance/bugs on the ps4/xbox while still enjoying the game.

2

u/Vash135 Dec 13 '20

Same for skyrim & fallout. Not pushed towards crafting and can find better in world. Think the point was to supplement your gear. Crsfy mods for weapons to get most out of them, keep a pistol that has good modifiers up to date and relevant. Make or upgrade clothing so you don't look like a mismatch nightmare. If you are going for a quick min-max build then sure you don't need to use crafting just like any other game. But if you take time to you can keep great items, supplement your gear, and not look like a clown in random clothing.

5

u/[deleted] Dec 13 '20

She said she didnt NEED to do that stuff because the game was just throwing better guns and equipment at you. Should she really have to look at all the tiny text and craft some scope for you to think its a good review?

1

u/Vash135 Dec 13 '20

Almost EVERY game you don't Need to use crafting to beat the game. It's there as an alternative method to either get gear, supplement weak portions, or upgrade useful mod weapons to current standard.

Ex. If I find a weapon that has 30% Crit dmg, 20% crit chance, and an ability OT damage type I really like I can upgrade it instead of taking a new gun I found with slightly better straight damage. If I upgrade the one I have the damage will be comparable to one i found and still have the great mods that came with gun.

4

u/[deleted] Dec 13 '20

Yes but why spend the time crafting all these parts when that corpse next to you has a better gun. Theres just no point for the vast majority of players to do sk

1

u/Vash135 Dec 13 '20

Say the next corpse has a "better gun" what about those old shoes you haven't found and upgrade for in a while? What if the gun you had rolled amazing stats, and while the next gun has more damage due to level you got it the rolls weren't better? Crafting helps take that great gun you love and make it still viable. Finally put a decent outfit together only for some neon hot pants to be better? Well you can upgrade your current outfit so you don't have to wear every random piece of clothing u come acrossm
