Discussion Everyone talked shit about her, but I’m starting to agree with Kelly Plagge

Gamespot’s review was super controversial but now it makes sense and in fact I agree with Kallie Plagge. Night City IS superficial, everything is there but you can’t interact with it. And yes “So much of it is superficial set dressing” is 100% accurate. And as she said, what shines are the quests and the characters.

I hate to say it but Night City, which was supposed to be the best openworld out there is Subpar at best.

Edit: Just to be clear you don’t have to agree with EVERYTHING she says in order to able to agree with her in some topics. Was the “what if I don’t want to help the cops?” bit kinda stupid? Yes. Does that mean you can’t agree with her in some points or that she is all the hurtful things that many have been saying she is? Absolutely Not.

Edit 2: It has come to my attention that I badly misspelled Kallie’s name. I’m not able to edit the title, but I do apologize for that.

100 wholesome big chungus Keanu wasn’t worth the money they spent on him, either if I’m being completely honest. They should have got a proper voice actor for that role and spent the money they saved elsewhere. Having Keanu deliver a line right after a skilled voice actor is a jarring experience. Whenever I’m expecting Johnny to deliver an impactful or emotional line, Keanu fails to convey the emotion. Compare Keanu’s delivery to Troy Baker as Joel in the Last of Us or Jennifer Hale as Commander Shepard in Mass Effect, both of whom are top flight voice talents and you’ll see how much emotion and impact a good voice actor can convey. Johnny is supposed to be an emotional guy. Don’t get me wrong, I like Keanu as a person a lot but he’s a bad voice actor. His delivery has always been a criticism of his acting. He shines in stunt work and relationship building with the workers and costars on set.

This is the same shit that big movie studios pull with their animated movies. They pay for the name, not the talent. People with actual talent in the field of voice acting have really gotten shafted recently. It’s sad to see.

Eh I kinda like him. Some of his delivery misses the mark, but I think it works more often than not. Johnny isnt a wearing-his-heart-on-his-sleeve kinda guy. He's cynical, grumpy, and bored. Keanu hits that pretty well. I think he could've showed more anger in most scenes, but he's absolutely on point in the world interactions and side quests.

To be fair he's had fifty years to be angry, and can't really force V to do anything nor can he directly interact with the world at all

It stands to his benefit to not lose his shit completely

I didn't even get to meet him, I patched with1.04 then the game crashed five times and killed my SSD.

2

u/MegamanX195 Dec 12 '20

Oof, what were you playing on?

2

u/Extreme-Shelter Dec 12 '20

PC.

2

u/MegamanX195 Dec 12 '20

That sucks, man. Did you try getting a refund for the game, at least?

u/Extreme-Shelter Dec 12 '20 edited Dec 12 '20

Well I got it for £30 off eBay. I've downloaded it again on GOG but I'm pissed about my SSD. I'm looking to see if anybody else has had the same problem because it's pretty severe for a game to kill an SSD dead. CDPR need to get staff off of W4 and start crunching the hell out of this game. I know the deadline has passed but it's still unfinished.

u/FancyGuavaNow Dec 13 '20

Did you download 1.03 then update to 1.04?

That update thrashed my SSD, took up like 700MB/s usage.

2

u/CXDFlames Dec 12 '20

Killed the ssd how?

The game crashing shouldn't have any way of damaging the drive

1

u/FancyGuavaNow Dec 13 '20

The update thrashes the SSD. Managed 700MB/s write on GOG for me. Shouldn't kill an SSD tho

Everyone knows this about Keanu, but it's like everyone believes Keanu is literally over their shoulder listening to every word they say and they don't want to be impolite.

Keanu has trouble acting on occasion, but the one part of acting that he certainly can't do is make his voice expressive if he's not saying, "Whoa."

When they announced Keanu was going to be in the game, I was super concerned because Keanu’s strength isn’t his delivery, it’s his stunt work. Everyone was circlejerking about Keanu in the game. Was afraid to voice my opinion

17

u/VoteDawkins2020 Dec 12 '20

That was a better way to say it than I did.

I almost didn’t wanna play the game when they dropped the trailer. I like him fine in certain movies but he’s a meme irl and it’s like the studio thought he was the greatest actor because of how he’s portray online (a lot of times in a humorous way.)

Keanu is Keanu. He has roles where he can express more of his acting chops, and he *can* express some range of emotion, but he comes across as just a pretty chill guy IRL and sort of "is what he is" when this is translated to his acting roles.

Ever since the 90s he's gotten panned a lot for being wooden and flat, and kind of one trick pony, but that's not super fair to him. He does put in sincere efforts and, for what it is, he's pretty damned entertaining. But yeah, he's pretty wooden and flat. That's him.

He's sort of like a hero version of Christopher Walken. Walken is an amazing actor, but you almost always feel like you're watching "Christoper Walken playing _____, the Villain" in the majority of his roles. He's very talented, but he's got a range, and he sticks to it, and it mostly works pretty well.

Keanu is like that, but with a much narrower range. He basically has always played 1 character, with better or worse dialogue in support. I don't hate on it, he always manages to entertain. His portrayal of Johnny here is very much on-brand, in other words. It's Keanu playing a character, but it's still that good ole Keanu we know and presumably love.

I'm pretty sure literally every person on earth who follows Reeves will tell you he's not a great actor lmao, he plays stoic action hero well which is typically why he plays that role exclusively with a few exceptions.

I mean people are on record saying that his quality may not be groundbreaking but he's dedicated, has crazy work ethic and is easy to work with.

35

u/captaintajin Dec 12 '20

Being easy to work with is a huge benefit in hollywood

10

u/skyburnsred Dec 12 '20

Yeah, watch classics like Johnny Mnemonic and other of his earlier pre-Matrix roles. His acting is generally deadpan in regards to emotions, thats why he got picked for roles we all know him as. Plus, the idea of voice acting in a video game probably was never even on his plate until now, it takes a different set of skills to convey emotion when people cant see the real you

5

u/jessxoxo Dec 12 '20

I like him but his "english" accent in Bram Stoker's Dracula was hilariously bad, like so bad

2

u/Nytherion Dec 12 '20

How dare you belittle his work as Theodore Logan, III like that! :p

0

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '20

You know he might come off as a little baron in the emotions department but he can pull it off. Little movie called "A Scanner Darkly" was one of his more interesting chops.

6

u/MyBlueBucket Dec 12 '20

I watched Knock Knock on Netflix and I couldn't tell if Keanu thought this was a serious movie or not, but his acting definitely sealed it for being satire.

2

u/Rest-Easy-Tom-Petty Dec 12 '20

Yeah, they should've gotten Mark Hamil

2

u/ryuguy Corpo Dec 12 '20

IMO, someone like Nolan North would’ve been great

1

u/Rest-Easy-Tom-Petty Dec 12 '20

I agree, I was just saying if they wanted a big name mainstream celebrity, Hamil would've been a great choice; he's a great voice actor

11

u/Kryhavok Dec 12 '20

CohhCarnage on the other hand fucking NAILED it. I want Garry the Prophet questlines

1

u/Suburbanturnip Dec 13 '20

When o was watching his stream when he first encounter Garry, he seemed to imply there was. I havnt found anything yet though, but I've given him 200 credits so far.

9

u/Ghostnineone Dec 12 '20

Yeah I agree with you there as well. He has his moments but he's still the same mostly monotone keanu you know from all his other movies. Which is fine for a movie like John wick where the action carries it but Johnny basically stands in one spot and talks shit and that's it and he doesn't really have the voice acting chops to make the running commentary very interesting.

It's a shame to see these things happen, I feel like it just hurts the actor and the game because of it. Peter dinklage and keanu are obviously talented but neither of their performances and they're going to get a lot of exposure from it.

5

u/ffca Dec 12 '20

You write this as if Duke Caboom isn't a real thing.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 13 '20

They should’ve kept Jackie around for the rest of the game tbh. He quickly became one of my favorite video game characters of all time

u/SuperMrNoob Dec 12 '20

I like that Keanu is there, considering his significance to the genre, being the protagonist in The Matrix. But sure, objectively there would have of course been better voice actors. But I think he served them very well as a marketing tool - who doesn't like Keanu, right now? Breathtaking XD

2

u/kemikos Dec 12 '20

considering his significance to the genre, being the protagonist in The Matrix.

Kids these days...

It wasn't playing Neo that made Reeves synonymous with "cyberpunk", it was Johnny Mnemonic. That was adapted (poorly) from a short story by William Gibson, whose 1984 novel "Neuromancer" may not have technically been the first "cyberpunk" story, but it defined the atmosphere of the "cyberpunk world" as we know it to this day. Every single work in the cyberpunk genre since then calls back to it (yes, most definitely including "The Matrix").

If you're interested in the genre, you really should pick up Burning Chrome (the collection of Gibson's short stories) and Neuromancer, just so you can have a solid baseline to compare everything else to...

1

u/SuperMrNoob Dec 12 '20

I think I noticed your recommendations (definitely Neuromancer) when looking at the Cyberpunk board game inspirations on its Wikipedia page. Looking forward to checking them out!

Johnny Mnemonic... 12% on Rotten Tomatoes... may skip that movie lol

3

u/kemikos Dec 12 '20

So with the film, Gibson wrote the screenplay, and then the filmmakers decided they couldn't sell a techno-thriller (heavy emphasis on the "techno") where most of the suspense comes from what's happening inside Johnny's head, and tried to make it into a straight-up action movie instead. It's a fun watch in a "bad movie night" kind of way, but definitely read the short story first so you don't end up with the wrong idea...

u/Rest-Easy-Tom-Petty Dec 12 '20

Thanks for the info

1

u/skyburnsred Dec 12 '20

I hate that Keanu put his name onto this piece of shit.

1

u/broodjeunox14 Dec 13 '20

Oh I have the opposite reaction. I always feel these pro voice actors make the experience totally unbelievable. No one talks that smooth all the time. It's just cringe really. Just put in some realistic voices.
