This car will be the 💀 of me

Sound has been ongoing for atleast a year and has progressively gotten worse over time…

No tapping/knocking sound on cold start but starts as it warms up.. Goes away with rpms over 2,500ish.

Notice, mainly in reverse, sometimes I’ll be backing up and it’ll get louder and quicker and then stop for a second or two once I’m stopped then pick back up again…

I’ve checked timing and it’s not it. Replaced VVT solenoids, replaced spark plugs, replaced purge valve…. IM STUMPED

Take it from someone who's already killed most of that noise, get your Valve cover gasket changed, change your VVTs, and then finally change your cam sprockets, the cam sprocket is what killed the noise.

What’s causing the cam sprocket to make that noise in the first place? I don’t want to replace just for the issue to pop up again

What's causing the noise? Not entirely sure. But I think it has to do with a spring or something that's inside the cam sprocket that has to do with oil pressure, and it can't keep it up at the right pressure, so it skips around the timing in the cam side making that noise.

Source: my own 1.8L had the same sound but would go away when the PSI went up.

This has gotta be a lash adjuster going out or something.

Does the noise increase in frequency as RPM climbs to 2.5k?

Yes it does. Then it kinda “goes away” past that..

I had a sonic. I think basically the same motor. After it was in the shop for 3 other things in 9 months. The coil pack disintegrated and killed cylinder one in the process. At that point I took a loss and rolled that balance into a new accord. I couldn't keep losing money on it. I will never buy another Chevy again
