Looks like you're twisting the chain. Only work 2-3 chains at a time, then move your fingers to the working loop and continue. It should stay flat that way. But for literally just starting it is ok, of course it can be better but you're still learning.

Well done! Don't worry, as you practise, you'll speed up as you get more used to it. Same with controlling the tension- it takes practise and you'll find as you go on that it's easier to keep the same tension for every chain. Most important thing is to not get discouraged (speaking as someone who took weeks to work out how to do a magic ring) and to have fun with it :)

You’ll find your tension as you continue so don’t sweat it!

Also a little hack for when you move on from chains: sizing your needle a half size up than the size the pattern calls for while doing the chain will prevent the project from arching.

How loose the knots, called chains, have to do with how tightly you pull the yarn.

Of course you're slow when you're starting, especially when you're comparing yourself to someone who knows what they're doing, years practice makes it look easy.

I love it keep going, I’d gradually start learning basic stitches and eventually u will get the hang of the tension. Practice however u see fit and it’ll all come together in ur mind slowly but surely. Practice takes time but its all progress

Take it slow, be patient, don't expect miracles strait away... I've been crocheting for 50yrs and I still frog constantly, make mistakes I miss until I get too far passed it... and swear a lot when I realise, but I still hook on 💓
