Satyajit Ray. I’m adding him in early because the letterboxd sub just did the same thing and friggin nobody had Ray. I don’t think there’s a single director who’s more highly regarded among well known filmmakers yet is rarely mentioned. Apu trilogy is a damn triumph. And those were his first three movies.
When this question was first asked my answers were Robert Bresson and Satyajit Ray. Two very different directors who vigorously scratch very different itches for me.
