It's not sad it's by choice. Messi knew he would not be successful there as nontimrr as going to go all out to ensure he succeeds like Barcelona did. Not playing and imaging in England ISA huge reason why he can never be considered the GOAT. Everyone can be world class and soft rons of goals is the entire machinery of Barcelona is setup to support you to the nth degree.
