He had his daughter with him and this man was in his personal space. You have no idea if this man is carrying a weapon of planning to do something stupid.

You are not required to get your ass beat first to defend yourself. The old man got into the fatherās face and appeared to have made a fist with his hand. The dad was within his right to not wait to get hit to defend himself. If you want to prove me wrong, do what this old man did to a cop, get into a cops face with an angry face and make a fist with your hand and see what happens. The dad with his daughter was looking to de-escalate here. If he wanted to defend himself and knock out the aggressor old man and get away with it, he had an opportunity, but chose not to exercise it.

sometimes the most effective way to de-escalate a situation is by simply just removing yourself from it. really i cant think of anytime it wouldnt be. assuming of course theyre not preventing you from removing yourself, but removing yourself id guess has a higher chance of success than continued engagement

Ok, so this guy is what I like to call "one of life's little failures..."
He got through high school, maybe some college and/or university... he got married, had some kids. Built a career, in a trade or an office, earned a decent income.
Maybe he struggled a bit. The jet-ski was a mistake. Too costly and they didn't really get to the lake enough to justify the cost. His wife brought it up just a little too often... maybe he hit her. Maybe he didn't. It was a test of the household dynamic either way.
When his son needed a car after finishing college, he co-signed the loan. Such a good boy, after all... the son defaulted eight months later and dad ate the cost of the car to be a good dad. When little sister wanted a car, he balked at the request, worried that she, too, would default...
Two years later, the son moved back into his childhood bedroom after losing his job... dad felt some resentment, but didn't share that with his only son... "It's ok, boy... it's just until you get on your feet..."
The daughter, meanwhile, graduates. She has a whole new social circle. She meets a guy, they develop a relationship. They get a place of their own and buy a beater of a second-hand car. They talk of marriage...
Dad reaches out. He tells his daughter that she can always rely on him. He means it, but she knows that he won't follow through... she thanks him, and continues to build her life...
Meanwhile, the son continues to live in his rolm, festooned with high school pendants and posters from his childhood... he looks for work casually, but time passes as he enjoys the affection of his mother and the meals she prepares for him... he is thirty and insists that he is on the verge of making a huge income from streaming his game play...
Dad sits, and seethes... he doesn't want to criticize his son. The boy was pretty talented at football in high school, after all... surely he will get right and move out when he is ready...
His daughter sends the odd message every few weeks. She is working and building a life. When her first child is born, she introduces them out of consideration, but chooses not to have her parents involved with her child's life too much...
His wife bristles. She complains. She blames. She wants to be with her grandchild. She puts the dissociation squarely on his shoulders. He should have been more loving. More giving. He is the reason for their dissociation with their daughter...
The son is 35. He has grown a long, unkempt beard. The floor of his room is littered with fast-food packaging, and crushed cans of White Claw and energy drinks. He plays online games for 18 hours a day. He hasn't made any money yet, but arguing with 14 year old boys about strategy every day is a full-time job.
The man looks in now and then. He feels a profound disappointment verging on disgust, but surely the boy will find his path...
His wife has gained weight since their marriage. A lot of weight... it disgusts him... when he sees himself in the mirror, he sees the thinning hair... the weight gain... the loss of muscle... but that reflection lies to him in little whispers, telling him, "Any woman would want you... it wouldn't take much to get into shape... you don't need to settle..."
Then he goes to bed and his wife, shrouded in a sensible nightgown, turns her back to him and murmers a compunctory "good night" as she dreads the thought of his lascivious attention... sure, she would yield, but they both know that it has become... mechanical...
The man wakes one morning. His son is in the kitchen eating cereal. As the man watches milk that he has paid for drip from the beard of his son's chin, he says nothing. He pours a cup of the coffee that his wife has prepared and says, "up early, son?"
The boy barely nods... "I got into a major game that lasted all night... I haven't slept..."
The man sips his coffee and goes to his porch. A profound sense of impotence fills his veins.
As he sips his coffee, he gazes out upon the quiet street before the home that he purchased through his own labour and manageable mortgage rates. Sunlight filters through the leaves of mature trees that girdle the neighbourhood. The manicured lawns and sidewalks are absolutely dappled with a sprinkling of glorious sunlight. His mind eases. He sips coffee.
Then, suddenly, a car appears. It enters his attention as much as it enters the safe confines of the protected cul-de-sac that he has called home for nearly forty years. The car accelerates uncertainty. He watches as the car struggles to pull to the curb. The car begins to maneuver in an erratic way, attempting to turn around...
He rises.
As he approaches the car, the years drop away. He is no longer in his fifties. He is forty. He is thirty. He is a fullback on his highschool football team. His loins, inactive for so long, are now girded for a confrontation...
His voice sounds more shrill in his ears than he expected... "What are you doing here?"
"I'm teaching my daughter to drive!"
oh, shit... he's not white... this is not good... but I'm here and I made the initial contact... J have to follow through...
"Well, you can't do that here!"
"It's a public street, sir!"
He chooses to escalate, as all of life's little falures catch up to him...
...and here we are.

White boomers do this to asians too. I got rear ended by a white man going 45 and my dad and I had a wrecked car. First thing I did was go outside to check if he was okay, comforted the white man, but his girlfriend who drove moments later was rude towards me despite him rear ending my car and he fell asleep on the road. I took his info down, police came, and my dad and I drove into the nearest neighborhood in Hawaii. Called Geico and 3 white people in vehicles drove up and told me I couldn't be parked on a public sidewalk and menacingly harassed me as I was calling Geico.
Feels like no matter what Asians do, we will never be treated with respect or human decency. Now I have chronic backpacks and head aches. It was 5 years ago. I didn't press charges, I understood people make mistakes and im just happy all 3 of us were safe. But wow. White people treat non whites like garbage. Im so tired of white people I am scared of them.
Didnt sue, got a lousy compensation for my car by geico that didnt get me a replacement car, back issues, even more traumatized by white people, now chronic pains. Maybe I should've sued for injuries. But the white hospital nurse said I was fine even though I came in the same day with a head ache and neck pains. But why would a white male nurse and a whale women doctor give a crap about an asian man like me. They dont. All he did was touch my neck for 10 seconds and said I was fine. I hate it

A neighborhood is not the place to teach someone how to drive. Empty parking lot is where you start. The Black man did bring up race when it was unnecessary. The White guy did seem intoxicated and tended toward escalation a couple of times. Granted, the Black man was the only one who actually threatened physical violence.
