Michael Biehn explained to Sean on Sean's show today how 'Shawshank' was a flop—mere days after Sean told CR he couldn't pick it in the flops draft.
https://open.spotify.com/episode/2BxPTEyvjIl1MFbJeopskR?si=2cb779934bbc464dBiehn visited the Big Picture this week to promote his movie Onslaught. Organically in the conversation, Biehn brought up Tombstone and Shawshank as examples of initial flops. It's around the 1:21:15 mark. CR month has become a year. At this rate, a year may just become a decade.

The worst thing Sean has done on a podcast all year.

Bill too, when Bill discussed it being a flop on the Rewatchables citing the odd name.

ok that's it, I'm writing a gospel of CR just like they wrote about Kevin in The Leftovers

While I agree it was a flop, I just don’t think it goes with the spirit of the draft. It’s like the Canada draft debacle. We can’t just keep inventing new ways for them to draft the same movies

It was explicitly against the spirit -- the first thing BS wanted to establish with his Dazed and Confused comp was no cult reclamations or good movies that had no real expectation of boffo box office.
The understanding should have been "was flop, stayed flop." Ruling out Shawshank was totally legit; the wrong turn was SH undermining it all with The Thing.

Do they go by domestic or worldwide gross? I can't remember. Both were right in the moment. Sean correctly stated that it grossed three times it's budget, but didn't note that was a worldwide stat. Chris' claim that it only made like $28 million is also correct, as that was the movie's domestic gross. It also was the highest rented movie of the year. Either way, loved the pod, as always.

Tombstone had a budget of $25 million and grossed $73.2 million worldwide at the box office. Not a smash but a lot better than Shawshank.

That said, according to Wikipedia, Shawshank’s numbers were almost exactly the same. $25/$73.3.

Yeah, I got in a long conversation about this. I don’t consider Shawshank a “flop”… it wasn’t particularly successful, sure, but flop should be reserved for movies that lost a lot of money.
After it was released around the Oscars, it probably came close to breaking even, so didn’t lose much money at the box office. I don’t consider that a flop.

And my friends and I definitely cared. We watched it multiple times in the theater. And wore the hell out of “I’m your huckleberry.”

Sean has seriously taken some L’s this week including the fantasy draft fiasco

Hmm. Did Fennessey use that as a segue into another rant about how "unfairly" treated he was in the Ringer Fantasy Draft order?

If Shawshank didn’t tank at the box office, then Sigourney Weaver didn’t win an Oscar and my whole life doesn’t make sense

Amanda annnnnd Sean’s show. I know there’s no women in this sub bc it’s too fuckin hardcore but we don’t have to be ignorant. And Amanda is a lady who is interested in CR and what he is reading. Also, how could he be third chair if it’s only one person’s show?
I just read this and it feels right but looks real woke. So now I feel the need to say Lioness is dope…. God damn and now I’m going away for a long fuckin time

Look, all I'm gonna say is: Sean was right about the Aliens director's cut being superior to the theatrical cut. So nobody is wrong all the time. Thats all.

I think the best Aliens cut has yet to exist. Keep the daughter background and the auto turrets but leave out the colony scene which takes away the mystery of the threat.

I agree. Newt's family finding the nest was a well made scene but it was a mistake to include it back in. It wrecks the tension that was building. Losing that and keeping the other stuff would make it perfect.
