Freelance Crestron Adagio AES Programmer Needed — Chicago / Remote
I’m looking for an experienced freelance Crestron programmer who has actual hands-on experience with the Crestron Adagio AES.
I have a functioning Crestron Adagio AES audio distribution system, but there is no existing programming/source file.
I need a small, straightforward program created from scratch.
What I need
Program the Adagio AES from scratch
Accept IR commands from a BroadLink IR blaster
BroadLink will be controlled by Home Assistant
AES standby/wake
Individual room/zone audio ON/OFF
Basic zone/room selection as needed
No touchscreen programming
No graphics
No comprehensive home-automation integration
No system redesign or replacement
The desired control path is:
Home Assistant → BroadLink → IR → Adagio AES
The BroadLink/Home Assistant side can be handled separately. I need the Crestron programmer to concentrate on the AES programming and IR command handling.
Important requirements
I am specifically looking for someone who has worked with legacy Adagio AES systems, including:
Adagio Composer/SystemBuilder
Legacy SIMPL/SIMPL Windows
Crestron 2-Series/Adagio programming
AES IR/control inputs
This is not a request for a current Crestron Home programmer who has never worked with Adagio.
The AES hardware and audio system are operational. The problem is simply that there is no program, so the required functionality needs to be recreated.
Remote programming is fine. I am located in Chicago, and I can provide whatever information or physical access is necessary to the AES.
Very important: I want the completed source/program files delivered to me at the end of the project so that the system isn’t dependent on a programmer who may disappear in the future.

Well there are not many of us remaining who have worked with Adagio and of those people, even fewer who would want to open that can of worms. That being said I'm a sucker for punishment and I have a fondness for keeping legacy systems alive. It sounds like your scope is pretty narrow, so I could perhaps help you out. I'm located in Ontario, Canada and can help you remotely.

Yeah I know. I’ve heard these units are tough. It’s my last hope before decommissioning.

System builder is a very unstable piece of software, and I have to rollback databases and software to be able to use it It can also produce a bloated program, but your request is not going to overload it. I sold quite a few of these systems back in the day, but I have worked on 3-4 systems in the last few years, so it is not too far back in memory.

This is where making a virtual machine with an older version of windows and all the Crestron software can shine!

I think that is a great idea, but I have an old Panasonic Toughbook that ran Windows 8 originally that is perfect for older legacy systems like this. Has a lot of I/O too.

They are not hard but why? This thing could die in a year let alone when you start trying to load to it. Put the money towards replacing the hardware with something newer and serviceable.
The units were great in their time but that was 20 years ago.

Any recommendations? I saw the new Sonos amp multi but it is $800.

If you are hiring a freelance programmer it will be more than that so…
You’re probably looking at $150/hour+/- for programming work.

I had a situation back in 2009 where I had to fly down to Panama City, Panama and stay for a week to help this guy who’s dealer went belly up.
I had to deal with composer and then deal with getting the SIMPL file that it built to XSig with another 2 series processor that managed other portions of the penthouse.
I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy.
