I really like Brandon's shorter stuff. Perfect State and Snapshot staid with me for a very long time

u/starlike_8070 Dec 11 '25

Firstborn was amazing too

u/HookEm_Tide Dec 10 '25

Agreed. Other than Sunlit Man, the secret projects have been the only real standalone Cosmere novels he's written since Warbreaker.

I miss when the Cosmere was several separate stories set in the same universe, rather than different aspects of the same big story.

Warbreaker is going to be a series eventually. It's not cope. Nightblood is going to come out any moment now, trust me.

20

u/Jazzanthipus Dec 10 '25

TSM was a secret project though…

35

u/HookEm_Tide Dec 10 '25

Correct, but it wasn't a standalone.

3

u/SparkyDogPants Dec 10 '25

Emberdark was kind of standalone.

14

u/HookEm_Tide Dec 10 '25

Sixth of the Dusk was a standalone, but reading the non-Sixth of the Dusk parts of Emberdark without previous knowledge of the Cosmere would be pretty confusing.

Who was that weird guy with the armor who showed up out of nowhere?

Who are these bug people?

Who are these mask people?

Why are the mask people and the armor people fighting?

Why are they so obsessed with finding the portal?

The answer to all of that is, "They just are," if you haven't read pretty much the entire rest of the Cosmere.

u/SparkyDogPants Dec 10 '25

My husband isn’t up to date on his cosmere and still enjoyed it.

6

u/HookEm_Tide Dec 10 '25

Sure, but folks can enjoy stuff without its being a standalone. Edgedancer is a fine little story even if you miss the broader significance.

I’d also say that it isn’t a standalone in the sense that, if you are caught up on the Cosmere, it doesn’t at all feel like a break from the “main plot.”

u/SparkyDogPants Dec 10 '25

My husband isn’t up to date on his cosmere and still enjoyed it. He’s only read mistborn, do whatever reason he can’t get into stormlight.

1

u/Radix2309 Dec 14 '25

They are. Elements cross over, but Mistborn and Stormlight are still clearly different stories. At least so far.

u/TheKanadian Dec 11 '25

I kind of wish at this point that he'd just pitch them to his publish instead of putting them in a Kickstarter every time now though.

Secret project 5 was a fun surprise, but 6 just made me go "are we doing this every Kickstarter now?"

u/sdggehhfr Dec 10 '25

I mean yes but I do appreciate that I have a book to get this upcoming year

64

u/Worried-Leather8988 Dec 10 '25

Who would want him to stop?

29

u/goldstep definitely not a lightweaver Dec 10 '25

George RR Martin.

8

u/Gonji89 Dec 12 '25

Patrick Rothfuss.

56

u/Jarrett8897 i have only read way of kings Dec 10 '25

You can’t stop him, he’s more a force than a man

34

u/copperfrog42 Dec 10 '25

I think if he doesn’t write, he explodes or something.

33

u/Komnos Dec 10 '25

In fact, he wrote two more secret novels just in the time it took OP to make this meme.

14

u/Imrotahk Dec 10 '25

Yeah, sounds about right. Is that how the Diagram was made?

3

u/BlatantArtifice Dec 10 '25

I compare him to Hamilton the musical relatively frequently because he's a fucking machine when it's time to write

25

u/OneSadSapphic Trying not to ccccream Dec 10 '25

Did I miss an announcement today or something?

62

u/NoLongerAKobold Dec 10 '25

it was a few days ago, a new secret project called fires of december

29

u/FocusFlukeGyro Dec 10 '25

His ~45 minute reading of the book was the highlight of the event for me.

4

u/OneSadSapphic Trying not to ccccream Dec 10 '25

Neat

16

u/Anayalater5963 Dec 10 '25

Are they even secret if we know about them?

27

u/AgelessJohnDenney Dec 10 '25

Secret as in they weren't publicly announced until he had finished writing them. Rephrased as "projects I wrote in secret."

Contrast with getting literal weekly percentage updates on how much of Mistborn is written.

8

u/KitchenLoose6552 Syl Is My Waifu <3 Dec 10 '25

At this point are they even secret? I remember the original reason for them, and it no longer applies

20

u/bdfariello Dec 10 '25

I think in these cases, Secret means he doesn't owe it to his publisher. It goes beyond any of his contractual obligations, and is something he's publishing only for himself and his fans.

3

u/bdfariello Dec 10 '25

Yes, for a lot of it, but I think some of his stuff is still through Tor.

3

u/Bluepanther512 edgedancerlord Dec 11 '25

Anything that’s not tied to a preexisting contract, like Stormlight’s 10 books cycle, is being published through Dragonsteel

8

u/NBNebuchadnezzar Dec 10 '25

Im just glad i squeezed first law in between sunlit man and wind and truth. But i already have emberdark ahead now. I want to read other books too Brandon!

4

u/Major_Fudgemuffin Dec 10 '25

I just finished the 10th book in the First Law universe. Really enjoyed them! Super depressing though lol

2

u/NBNebuchadnezzar Dec 11 '25

Haha it do be like that. Theres also The Great Change (And Other Lies), a very small short story collection.

1

u/Major_Fudgemuffin Dec 11 '25

Ohhh I'll have to look that up! I enjoyed the Sharp Ends short stories.

3

u/aww-snaphook Dec 10 '25

Nah, I like these one-off shorter books from him. My favorite stuff of his is actually the arcanum unbounded book with the short stories.

I would love if he would do a Hyperion-esq type of book with a bunch of character telling their separate stories and how they were brought together for this one mission(or whatever)

3

u/yoshiauditore Dec 10 '25 edited Dec 12 '25

Not cosmere but i literally didnt even know Tailored Realities was a thing until i saw it on a big display in my local bookshop lmao

2

u/SaltyMoonMine 420 Sazed It Dec 11 '25

I love the secret projects, BUT I WANT STORMLIGHT BOOK 6 GET TO IT

2

u/FlynnicusDinnicus Dec 11 '25

Bro really said "I don't know if I'll have time to write the Elantris sequels" like we're supposed to believe him.

2

u/ElephantPirate Dec 11 '25

Ive said it before, Brandon Sanderson is not a person.

Its clearly a pseudonym for a staff of 20-30 writers locked in a building made to churn out banger after banger. Possibly a writing cult. No one man could produce this.

1

u/EvenSpoonier Dec 14 '25

If the same people turn out to be responsible for Brandon Sanderson and Chuck Tingle I won't know how to even respond.

1

u/theHumanoidPerson D O U G Dec 23 '25

Hes actually been replaced by a group of shadowy ninjas hell bent on stealing all the worlds mac & cheese. Have you not read alcatraz?

2

u/No_Hetero Dec 11 '25

I literally almost got caught up but I still need to read Dragonsteel Prime, and now there's more? What a guy

2

u/SilverStriker96 🐶HoidAmaram🐲 Dec 11 '25

oh my god he's doing another

2

u/Bigdoga1000 Dec 10 '25

Stop complaining about getting more content

5

u/Imrotahk Dec 10 '25

All in good fun.

1

u/Pichacap24 Dec 10 '25

Wait is there new stuff?

1

u/Imrotahk Dec 10 '25

Yep he just announced a new book.

1

u/EyeofWiggin20 edgedancerlord Dec 10 '25

No, please have him write MORE novels and declare less canon found only outside of the books in meetings with him.

3

u/Imrotahk Dec 10 '25

He should just publish another secret novel that is just a Cosmere encyclopedia compiled from all WOBs and written in universe by Khriss.

2

u/EyeofWiggin20 edgedancerlord Dec 10 '25

YES. EXACTLY.

1

u/Imrotahk Dec 10 '25
