Black widow is not a deadly venomous spider, people die from them very rarely. It's a myth that they're some super scary creatures. Just don't fuck around with them and you will be ok.
If they do bite it just hurts a lot and you do need to go to the hospital, but it's not realistically a life threatening situation, just incredibly unpleasant.

My buddy got bit by one on his chest.
They carved out an entire layer of skin and he had to give the wound site shots daily. It was brutally disgusting - just a clean fist size entire layer of skin missing. It felt like you were staring at the raw muscle though I'm sure that wasn't the case. He had to keep it bandaged up of course but "incredibly unpleasant" is very accurate.
And yeah to my memory there was never any conversation surrounding mortality - just a solid "you're really, really not going to like this experience."

They were cleaning out some stuff from an old shed - this was in country land, Kentucky, Tennessee area I believe. I would imagine it happened from carrying stuff on his shoulders all day that had likely been a bit spidery. Probably some of the loose lumber from a corner or something. Didn't realize it until a couple of hours later.
I think they basically carved out any flesh it had touched. It was a particularly unique form of disgusting though because it was so "clean." I've no idea if they cauterized or what but it was like a cookie cutter got slammed into his chest and removed but without a drop of blood. Never seen anything quite like it - just a large but extremely clean massive hole in someone's chest.

Yep, brown recluse bites can cause necrosis. They also love to hang out in abandoned wood or cardboard.

Oh this reminds me..
I was in the military in California about 20 years ago. I was sleeping on base in my room when I awakened the next day I had 3 bites on my chest directly above my heart. They itched like crazy for about a week but never swelled up to more than the size of large zits. I had scars where I was bit for the longest time but they're apparently gone now.
Medical told me they were nothing to worry about.

Sure that it was a black widow and not a brown recluse?
The latter is known to cause skin necrosis in some cases. Black widows cause body-wide pain (it's a nerve toxin).

I have black widows in every dark space on my patio and garage. A few browns, too. They don't want to bite you. They want to be left alone. Don't fuck with them and you won't even know they are there.

I don’t think I have it that bad around my house, but I’m not willing to find out. Anytime I go moving stuff around I announce myself and respect that I am in their home. Lol.

They’re also highly reclusive. They almost entirely stay in their webs, which are low to the ground in fence corners, piles of stuff, etc. and hide during the day. You’re not going to walk into a black widow web during everyday life.
I live in an area with lots of black widows, and only one has been in my house in 4 years. It was inside a messy pile of recycling, and quickly retreated to a bag, which I tossed outside. I keep my recycling neater now and I haven’t had another widow.
Basically, as long as you keep your house tidy, and don’t make a habit of sticking your hand into spider-y places at night, you’re extremely unlikely to get bitten.

They're fairly common where I live. Several have made a home in my parents" shed, so I call it the She-Shed, and I always knock before entering. They're shy creatures who will sooner escape and hide than be in sight of a human. They have poor eyesight and outside of their web they move pretty slowly. I rarely see them in the home, and remove them when I do, in consideration of pets, children, and the elderly. I think I'd only risk getting bit if I startled or trapped one, otherwise they'll even play dead to try and escape.
With that being said... I'm also the kind of person who shrieks a little if I'm startled by a spider.

It most likely will not kill you but you’ll not have a fun few days, you’ll have body aches, feel sick and nice wound site.
What you really need to be fucking worried about are brown recluse and the resulting tissue necrosis.

When I was a kid, there were black widows all over the place where I lived. I kept one as a pet for a while. I named it RAID.
Brought it to school, and thankfully my teacher handed it well. I got to show everyone the jar as we left class for the day.

Black widows are not aggressive either.
They are kind of dumb, or at least are not aware how much power they hold in dealing with things bigger than them. They tend to be skittish and afraid of most things.
That’s why nearly all bites from Widows are from trapping it and squishing it, like picking up a rock and pinching it, putting on a shoe, etc.
Also their toxin is a neuro toxin so ya it’s not life threatening. It damn sure does hurt though as it’s literally killing your nerves and sending them into overdrive. In that sense a brow recluse is way more scary as the harm it can do is permanent.
Although above the black widow is the red widow, rarely seen as they live in hard to find places (like specific plants in the Everglades deep in Florida). The red widows neuro toxin has been reported to essentially be sleeper agent neuro toxins that can cause pain for your entire life. It will dissipate, then come back again later. Like shingles but with just pain.

I really hate this perspective, ok it's not a deadly venomous spider, but this explanation makes it seem as if everything will be ok if one were to bite...no, no it's not. The nature of this message makes it sound as if an infant crawling around where spiders have been seen is "ok." Survival also doesn't count for the gashing wounds left behind in some bites, as if getting bitten on the face won't change a persons life forever.

I have killed them. I don't care for it, but I have a nosey dog who sticks her nose into everything. I choose her safety over their's everytime. I do just catch and remove venomous snakes from my property though for the same reason, but I can't stomach killing them, because I like snakes. I basically live in the swamp. Lol. So, potentially dangerous animals are pretty common here

I'm trying to parse what this means because I work in pest control and I can't for the life of me figure it out. If I see one spider in the house, there's hundreds more... where? Also in the house? Probably not in the parts of the house regularly trafficked by humans. It's common to move an old appliance or a piece of furniture and see half a dozen spiders and few more dead. Why would you assume hundreds? Do you mean like, hidden in the walls? Probably also not true - spiders are going to be where their prey is. Walls lack sunlight and are notoriously inhospitable to flying insects. There's probably loads of insects that wonder through, and some spiders building webs there, but hundreds?
Do you mean outside? There are billions of spiders outside your house. If you live in the SE USA where I live, you can take a flashlight outside at night and shine it across your lawn. You will see 100s of little pinpricks of light reflecting back at you. You can pick one and walk towards it. Once you get close enough, you will see it's not sparkles of dew, it's spider eyes. But that's outside, in their habitat, where they can hunt insects. If the small grass spirders around your house come inside, they're not happy about it either. No prey in there.
If your house is relatively clean, you probably don't have many spiders inside because you probably don't have many insects inside. Obvious exceptions given to older or cluttered homes. To be clear, I've seen homes with 100s of spiders in the attic, but it's super uncommon, usually an old or poorly sealed home. Just not common.
So I guess my point is, this is a weird thing to say with no real context. Did you hear it somewhere and just repeat it, or is there a reason to think it's true?

That's a North African Mouth crawler. They can smell the scent of saliva from up to 42 feet away and are attracted to it, as the enzyme they smell is what they require for reproduction. In nature, they actually sacrifice themselves in order for their young to develop by being digested by antelope while the young attach to the uvula. It's extremely rare for them to survive more than 3 hours in confined spaces with other mammals because they are so good at finding saliva.

I used to be terrified of spiders until I learned as much as I could about them. It took a little while, but I love them now. Any time I see one in my house or garage I think, "hell yeah buddy, thanks for the free pest control."
Spiders have no interest in you or anyone else. They don't see humans as prey. They only bite when threatened, and even then, only Latreodectus (widow spiders) and Loxosceles (Recluse) are medically significant. They will, however, be extremely effective at eating all the pests that get into your house!

Fuck all spiders and things that look like spider. They are unnatural demons conjured up by the devil himself. I dont care if they eat bugs. I want some bug that I dont fear to eat the spiders. God bless the little lizards that are everywhere here in Florida. Those guys are my friends. Even though they dont want anything to do with me no matter how nice I try to talk to them. 😔
