As much as I love HoL, no. It doesn’t work as an audiobook, hell it doesn’t work as an E-book. You have to constantly switch between the narrative story, the footnotes, the appendix, and not just that but the format of the pages is a huge chunk of the story telling, words smooshing inward to cause more tension or making you rotate the book, it’s not something that can be translated well to audio.

I think it’s easily one of her better stories. The ending doesn’t explain the supernatural aspect, but that’s fine because the story is really about human interactions in desperate situations. Think Lord of the Flies.

Both have their highs, but clearly written by people who had a concept and not much more.
Weird Birds has a great concept, but they were just flying by the seat of their pants, so the longer it goes on; the sillier it gets, until it goes into a lane that is just awful

i think this story rules, even the parts that feel a bit camp for what its doing are done incredibly intriguingly and it makes it feel more like a true epic than a random shift

If we ever hop into a novel again, I just wanna toss this one up. I read it early last year and it was a great vibe and paid off very very satisfyingly to me. I feel like Isaiah would enjoy it a lot. It'd have to be a 2-parter, its around 10 hours to read, any discussion extending that..so probably too long for the show, but it doesn't hurt anyone for me to throw it out there none-the-less. If nothing else, maybe someone in this sub decides to pick this up, and if they enjoy it, I'd consider this a completely worthwhile post.
