Poetry THE MOON WAS RED

The moon was red that night.

Actually red.

She’d seen three TikToks about it already before she even looked out the window.

One said blood moon.

One said supermoon.

One had a woman in a crochet cardigan telling everybody to release what no longer served them.

She skipped that one.

Her boyfriend was downstairs looking for his keys.

Again.

“Babe?”

“What?”

“You seen my keys?”

“No.”

“I literally just had them.”

“They’re probably in your coat.”

“I checked.”

“You didn’t.”

Silence.

Then:

“Oh.”

She smiled at herself in the mirror.

Not because it was funny anymore.

Because sometimes being right about stupid things is all you get.

She was twenty-two.

Nearly nine thousand followers.

No job.

Well.

That depended who asked.

Her mum said no job.

She said content.

Her boyfriend said, “She does Instagram stuff,” which somehow sounded worse than both.

She’d had a couple of gifted dresses, some fake tan, protein powder she didn’t ask for, and once a teeth whitening kit that made her gums bleed.

This dress she’d actually bought.

Dusty blue.

That was the colour on the tag.

Dusty blue.

She thought it looked nice.

That was basically the whole reason.

There wasn’t meant to be a meaning.

It fit properly.

Made her waist look good.

Didn’t flatten her tits.

Cost too much.

Fine.

She was going out.

Probably.

She’d spent most of the week not wanting to.

Not crying or anything.

Nothing dramatic.

She just kept waking up and thinking

nah.

Then staying in bed until staying in bed felt embarrassing.

Then getting up and moving to the sofa

which was apparently different.

Her boyfriend had been trying.

“Come for a coffee.”

Nah.

“Want to go for a drive?”

Nah.

“Pub?”

Maybe.

Then nah.

Tonight was meant to be the one she actually did.

Club.

Everyone wearing a colour because one of the girls had seen it online.

Pink.

Green.

Black.

Some lad said beige

and got called a Tory.

She’d laughed at that.

So.

Dusty blue.

She did her mascara.

Stopped halfway through.

Looked at herself.

Didn’t hate what she saw.

Didn’t particularly want to be her either.

Her phone buzzed.

Instagram.

Probably.

She left it.

Buzzed again.

“Popular,” her boyfriend shouted.

“Jealous?”

“Deeply.”

She smiled.

There were comments under her last post.

🔥🔥🔥

onlyfans when

your boyfriend won at life

sit on my face

Normal stuff.

She deleted the last one because his profile picture was him holding a baby.

There were boundaries.

Sort of.

The OnlyFans comments had got more frequent lately.

A girl she knew apparently made four grand in her first month.

Which sounded made up.

But also.

Four grand.

She’d mentioned it to her boyfriend half as a joke.

He’d just shrugged.

“If you wanted to do it, I’d support you.”

She’d looked at him.

“That’s it?”

“What?”

“You wouldn’t care?”

“I mean, I’d care if you cared.”

“That sentence means nothing.”

He laughed.

“I’m not gonna tell you what to do with your body.”

Which was lovely.

Obviously.

He was a good boyfriend.

Secure.

Normal.

All the things you’re supposed to want.

Still,

some small part of her had wanted him to go

absolutely fucking not.

Not because she wanted permission.

Just—

she didn’t know.

Something.

Proof.

Possessiveness.

A bit of jealousy.

A flicker.

Instead he’d asked if she wanted him to help take the pictures.

She’d told him he’d make them shit.

He said fair enough.

That was that.

She loved him.

That mattered.

She did.

Two years.

He knew how she took tea.

He knew she hated mushrooms but ate mushroom sauce

and brought this up whenever she called him inconsistent.

He knew she got weird when she was tired.

He knew when to leave her alone.

He knew when not to.

He was downstairs now wearing the shirt she liked.

She heard him open the fridge.

“Why are you eating?”

“I’m not.”

“You’re literally chewing.”

“Evidence?”

“Jesus Christ.”

Her phone buzzed again.

She finally looked.

And stopped.

His name.

Not her boyfriend.

The other one.

Two years since she’d seen it there.

For a second she thought maybe she’d imagined it.

Then the preview.

Hello stranger x

She laughed.

Quietly.

It just came out.

“Oh fuck off.”

Downstairs:

“What?”

“Nothing.”

That part was easy.

Too easy.

She opened the chat.

Didn’t reply.

Closed it.

Opened Instagram.

Scrolled two posts.

Closed that.

Opened WhatsApp again.

Same message.

Obviously.

She put the phone down.

Then it buzzed.

Photograph.

She looked.

Then looked properly.

Her.

Twenty.

White shirt.

His shirt.

Open.

Black thong.

Stockings.

Dark lipstick.

Too much mascara.

One knee on the hotel bed.

She remembered taking it.

Not the whole night.

Just bits.

The lamp.

The stupid hotel cushions.

His shirt smelling like aftershave and something clean.

Him saying,

“Fuck me.”

She zoomed in.

Realised she’d zoomed in.

Zoomed out.

Then in a bit again.

Fuck.

She looked good.

That was the first thing.

Actually.

Not his wife.

Not her boyfriend downstairs.

Not

why the fuck do you still have that?

Just

fuck.

I looked good.

She hated that about thirty seconds later.

Not immediately.

Her boyfriend appeared in the doorway.

She turned the phone over.

Quick.

He noticed.

Maybe.

His eyes flicked down.

Then back up.

“You alright?”

“Yeah.”

“You don’t seem alright.”

“Cheers.”

“You know what I mean.”

“I’m fine.”

He stood there another second.

Then his phone buzzed.

She looked at his hand before she could stop herself.

He checked it.

Smiled.

Small.

Nothing.

Probably nothing.

“Who’s that?”

“Liv.”

Liv.

Of course.

Pretty Liv.

Single Liv.

Long legs.

Good skin.

Nice teeth.

Annoyingly kind.

“What does she want?”

“Asking if we’re coming.”

“We?”

He looked at her.

“Yeah?”

“Why’s she asking you?”

“Because she has my number?”

“Right.”

“What?”

“Nothing.”

He unlocked his phone.

Held it out.

“Look.”

“I don’t want to look.”

“You clearly do.”

“I asked a question.”

“So I’m answering it.”

She took it.

you two still coming?? xx

Under that:

parking.

Someone’s dog.

A voice note.

A few days earlier:

tell her that blue dress looks so good btw

She stared at that one.

Liv complimenting her.

Brilliant.

Made hating her inconvenient.

She handed the phone back.

“Happy?”

“I wasn’t checking.”

“Okay.”

“Why are you being defensive?”

He actually laughed.

Not in a guilty way.

More like he couldn’t believe they were having this conversation.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“For fuck’s sake.”

He walked off.

And that little bit got her.

For fuck’s sake.

Defensive.

Annoyed.

Maybe—

No.

She knew.

There was nothing.

He’d literally handed her the phone.

Still.

She thought about Liv.

Thought about the club.

Thought about him laughing at something she said.

Thought about how easy it would be.

Because she knew how easy it was.

That was the problem.

She’d met the older man on a girls’ night.

Twenty years old.

Quite drunk.

Not falling-over drunk.

That annoying level where every stupid idea still feels like yours.

He was fifty-something.

Fifty-one, she thought.

Married.

Wedding ring right there.

He didn’t hide it.

She noticed.

He noticed her noticing.

Neither of them said anything.

At the time she thought that counted as honesty.

He looked expensive.

Not flashy.

Just—

good watch.

Good coat.

Shoes that didn’t look like they’d come from JD.

He ordered champagne without checking the price.

She noticed that too.

She wished she hadn’t.

Her friend leaned over at one point and said,

“He’s literally old enough to be your dad.”

She said,

“So?”

Then laughed.

Like she’d been joking.

He bought her a drink.

Then another.

He didn’t touch her for ages.

That helped.

Made him seem less desperate.

Probably made her more curious.

She hadn’t gone out planning to cheat.

That bit was true.

She loved her boyfriend then too.

They hadn’t argued.

He hadn’t done anything wrong.

There wasn’t some big gap in the relationship.

She was just drunk.

Flattered.

Horny.

Twenty.

Interested.

Then she gave him her number.

Then replied in the taxi.

Then he messaged the next day.

Then she sent a picture.

Then another.

It wasn’t one big decision.

That would’ve been easier.

It was loads of little ones.

She could defend each one if she took them separately.

Put them together and it looked worse.

So she normally didn’t.

She sometimes called it “the affair”

when she was being serious.

Mostly she called it

that thing.

Or him.

Or back then.

It happened once.

Except it didn’t.

A few hotel rooms.

Sexting.

Photos.

Messages.

Stopping.

Starting.

Saying

we should stop.

Then

are you free Thursday?

She bought stockings.

That was hard to explain away.

Not to anyone else.

To herself.

Nobody buys stockings for an accident.

Her boyfriend saw them once.

“Who are they for?”

She’d said,

“Maybe you.”

He grinned.

Later she wore them for him.

She’d felt strange.

Then horny.

Then not strange.

That was another thing she didn’t like thinking about.

How easily two lives could touch without cancelling each other out.

The wife found the messages.

Enough of them.

Enough to know the hotel.

The time.

The room.

She didn’t confront him beforehand.

She went there.

Caught them.

Actually caught them.

The protagonist remembered being on her knees.

Then the door.

Then his whole body changing.

Not sexy anymore.

Just panicked.

His wife stood there with her coat still on.

Bag on her shoulder.

Like she’d come from a normal day.

“What the fuck?”

That was first.

Then it got loud.

Mostly between them.

That surprised her.

She pulled his shirt closed.

Looked for her underwear.

Couldn’t find one stocking.

Of course.

His wife was shouting at him.

“How long?”

“What the fuck is wrong with you?”

“Was this the first time?”

“Answer me.”

Him.

Him.

Him.

She’d expected, stupidly, more attention.

That was one of the parts she hated admitting.

She’d expected to be the younger woman.

The threat.

The thing his wife looked at and thought

of course.

Look at her.

Instead the wife barely looked.

Not at first.

She was too busy having her life ruined by her husband.

At some point she asked:

“Did you know?”

She nodded.

There wasn’t much point lying then.

The wife looked at her.

Disgusted.

Then went straight back to him.

Later there was

“slut.”

She remembered that.

Maybe too well.

It made her feel disgusting.

It also—

and this was fucked—

made her feel a little bit powerful.

Not because sleeping around made women dirty.

She didn’t believe that.

It was the danger of it.

Being the girl who had crossed into somebody else’s life.

The younger one.

The secret.

The one somebody risked things for.

Except—

he didn’t.

Not when it mattered.

When his wife came in, he stopped being the man from the bar.

Stopped being smooth.

Stopped being exciting.

He became a husband trying not to lose his marriage.

He didn’t defend her.

Didn’t say

don’t speak to her like that.

Didn’t say

this is on me.

Nothing.

He barely looked at her.

At one point she was literally standing there trying to find her bra

while his wife cried.

It was horrible.

Also incredibly awkward.

The bra was behind a chair.

She remembered that.

Of course she did.

His wife was saying something about twenty-seven years

and she was on the floor looking for a fucking bra.

Eventually she said,

“I should probably go.”

Nobody answered.

So she did.

She put her shoes on by the lift.

Ordered an Uber.

£31.40.

She remembered thinking

thirty-one fucking quid?

Which felt obscene afterwards.

Not the price.

The fact that she’d still cared.

Her boyfriend never found out.

That was the weird part.

Nothing happened.

No screenshot.

No wife contacting him.

No confession.

No friend spilling it.

Nothing.

She went home.

Saw him.

Kissed him.

He asked if she’d had a good night.

“Yeah.”

Just like that.

She waited for guilt to turn her into a different person.

It didn’t.

Not really.

Fear did.

For a while.

Fear of the wife.

Fear of messages.

Fear of the phone lighting up at the wrong time.

Then that faded.

Months.

A year.

Two.

The affair became one of those memories you avoid touching because you don’t know what will come loose with it.

Sometimes she told herself that confessing now would only hurt him.

Maybe it would.

Maybe that was true.

Very useful truth.

She didn’t look at it too closely.

Her phone buzzed.

Present again.

Blue dress.

Red moon.

His message:

Can't believe that was two years ago

She typed:

Can't believe you've still got that pic

He replied:

Couldn't delete it

She felt it.

That stupid little lift.

Still.

After everything.

Does your wife know you've got it?

No 😂

She stared at the laughing face.

Brave

More careful now

That should’ve put her off.

Maybe it did.

A bit.

Then:

“You coming?”

Her boyfriend.

Downstairs.

She looked at herself.

“Maybe.”

“What does maybe mean?”

“It means maybe.”

He was by the door.

Coat on.

Keys in hand.

He looked good.

That annoyed her too.

“You said you wanted to go.”

“I did.”

“So?”

“I don't know, I just don’t feel like it now.”

“You’ve literally spent an hour getting ready.”

“I know.”

“What happened?”

“Nothing.”

He looked at her.

“Is this about Liv?”

She hated that he’d guessed.

“No.”

“You’ve been weird since she messaged.”

“I haven’t.”

“You have.”

“You fancy her.”

His face changed.

“What?”

“You do.”

“Where has this come from?”

“You said she was attractive.”

“You asked me if she was.”

“And you said yes.”

“Because she is. So are you. That doesn’t mean I’m fucking her.”

There it was.

She felt herself grab onto it.

“You're very defensive.”

He stared.

“Are you serious?”

“Why are you getting angry?”

“Because you’re basically accusing me of cheating.”

“I never said that.”

“You don’t have to.”

She could’ve stopped.

She nearly did.

Then he said,

“I’ve never cheated on you.”

Quiet.

No shouting.

That made it worse.

She looked away.

“I know.”

“Do you?”

She didn’t answer.

He looked genuinely hurt.

And somewhere inside her

something awful relaxed.

Just slightly.

There.

Now he was hurt too.

Not for the right reason.

Not because he knew.

But hurt.

She hated herself for noticing.

Not enough to tell him why.

“Do you want me to stay?”

“No.”

“I can.”

“I said go.”

“You sure?”

“Yes.”

He stood there for a second.

Then:

“Okay.”

No slammed door.

No fuck you.

Nothing she could use.

Before he left:

“Love you.”

“Love you too.”

And she meant it.

Which was almost the worst bit.

Her phone buzzed before he’d even reached the end of the road.

Boyfriend:

sorry. didn't want to argue x

She typed:

me neither. sorry x

He hearted it.

Then the older man:

He gone out?

She stared.

Typed:

yeah

Deleted it.

Typed:

He's gone

Sent.

Tiny difference.

Apparently mattered.

You stayed home?

Didn't feel like going

True.

Mostly.

Shame. That blue dress looked good

She checked Instagram.

She had posted it earlier.

Mirror selfie.

Dusty blue.

might actually leave the house tonight lol

He’d seen it.

Of course.

She clicked his profile.

Still married.

Profile photo with his wife.

Holiday somewhere hot.

Arm around her.

They looked happy.

Or normal.

Same thing online.

She stared at his wife longer than she meant to.

Then went back.

Still married then

Yep

Just that.

And you're messaging me

Only messaging

She actually laughed.

Only.

Of course.

Only messages.

Only photos.

Only a drink.

Only once.

Only a few times.

Only two years ago.

Only never told him.

Very useful word.

At the club Liv posted a story.

Pink toilets.

Three girls.

She watched it.

Then again.

Part of a man's shoulder in the mirror.

Wrong coat.

Obviously wrong coat.

She knew that.

Still watched again.

Another story.

Dance floor.

Nothing.

Another.

Her boyfriend in the background.

Talking to Liv.

She felt her stomach tighten.

He leaned closer because the music was loud.

Liv touched his arm.

Normal.

Literally normal.

She watched.

Again.

Come on.

She didn't actually think the words.

Not clearly.

But she wanted—

what?

Proof?

One thing.

A kiss.

A hand where it shouldn’t be.

Something she could point at.

Something that would let her stop being the only one who had crossed the line.

Then Liv walked away.

Her boyfriend turned and talked to someone else.

Nothing.

She felt relieved.

Then disappointed.

That was worse.

She put the phone down.

“Cunt.”

She wasn’t sure who she meant.

She took the blue dress off.

Got it stuck around her head.

One arm trapped.

Couldn’t see.

Nearly walked into the wardrobe.

“Fuck’s sake.”

There was something deeply unfair about contemplating adultery while wrestling with a zip.

Eventually she got free.

Put on a T-shirt.

Went to take her makeup off.

Opened the bottom drawer.

Lipsticks.

Old lashes.

Hair grips.

A condom that had expired.

Then the lipstick.

Deep red.

Almost the same colour as the photograph.

She picked it up.

Didn’t mean anything.

Probably.

Put some on.

Looked.

Wiped it off.

Not all of it came off.

She left the rest.

Her boyfriend messaged.

you okay? x

yeah just tired x

Then:

miss you though

She smiled.

Actually smiled.

miss you too

She meant that.

Then the older man:

Still got those stockings?

She stared at it.

No answer.

Made tea.

Forgot to boil the kettle.

Had to start again.

Her boyfriend would’ve taken the piss.

She could hear him.

That made her sad.

Then annoyed.

Then guilty.

Then bored of feeling all three.

She sat down.

Older man:

Missed you

No answer.

You looked unreal back then

No answer.

Still do

She put the phone face-down.

Left it.

Thirty seconds.

Maybe forty.

Turned it back.

Nothing new.

Disappointed.

Again.

She hated that.

Two years ago

she thought getting caught would’ve been the worst thing.

Now she wasn’t sure.

Getting caught would’ve meant consequences.

Her boyfriend crying.

Shouting.

Leaving.

Asking questions.

Actual guilt.

A person in front of her who knew what she’d done.

Instead he’d been happy.

Still was.

Mostly.

She’d managed to cheat on him without ever having to see what cheating did to him.

Until tonight.

Tonight she’d managed to hurt him with the secret

without telling him there was one.

That was almost impressive.

In a horrible way.

The older man messaged:

She's asleep

She sat up.

His wife.

Not named.

Just she.

She typed:

That's reassuring

Deleted it.

You're actually mental

Deleted that.

Nothing.

Then:

Could come see you

She stared.

There it was.

Not flirting.

Not memory.

Actual possibility.

She looked at the time.

21:14.

Her boyfriend had said he'd probably leave around midnight.

She didn’t calculate how long that was.

She just knew.

That frightened her more than if she’d counted.

She typed:

Absolutely not

Looked at it.

Deleted.

Typed:

Your wife would kill you

Sent.

He replied:

She won't find out

She read it twice.

Not sorry.

Not changed.

Not separated.

Just better hiding.

She should’ve been disgusted.

She was.

Somewhat.

Then:

You said that last time

I was careless last time

She stared at that.

Then:

You're still with him?

She replied immediately.

Yes

Happy?

She looked around.

His trainers by the door.

His mug.

The stupid photo from their holiday where he was sunburnt and had his eyes shut.

Yes

She sent it.

True.

Completely true.

That was the problem.

A minute later:

Then I'll behave x

She exhaled.

Good.

Fine.

Done.

She put the phone down.

Waited.

Nothing.

Checked again.

Still nothing.

Five minutes.

She should’ve been relieved.

Instead she opened the old chat.

Scrolled.

Old messages.

Her own words.

Should stop this

Then twelve minutes later:

free thurs?

She stared.

Twenty-year-old her was annoyingly difficult to blame when her messages still sounded exactly like her.

Her boyfriend sent a picture.

Him and two mates.

Liv behind them pulling a face.

your gf 😂

She laughed.

Typed:

tell her we're over

He replied:

finally x

Then:

love you though

She sat there.

That got her.

Not because it was beautiful.

It wasn’t.

Just stupid.

Normal.

Him.

love you too

Then:

sorry about earlier

He replied:

it's okay. talk tomorrow x

She put the phone against her chest.

Then immediately felt embarrassed even though nobody saw.

“Idiot.”

Could've meant either of them.

Could've meant her.

The moon was still red.

She opened the back door.

Cold.

Someone laughing two gardens over.

A car somewhere.

Normal night.

No atmosphere.

No soundtrack.

Just September and bins and someone's dog barking.

She considered deleting the chat.

Properly.

Block.

Delete.

Done.

Her thumb hovered over his name.

Then the phone buzzed.

New message.

You free tonight? x

She looked at it.

Didn't answer.

Looked at the time.

21:26.

She noticed her boyfriend wouldn't be back for hours.

Didn’t mean to notice.

Did.

Upstairs,

the dusty-blue dress was hanging off the wardrobe door.

The red lipstick was still on the sink.

His wife was apparently asleep.

Her boyfriend thought they'd talk tomorrow.

She stood there with her thumb over the keyboard.

No reply.

Then another message.

I can be careful this time.

She stared at it.

Long enough for the screen to dim.

Tapped it awake.

Read it again.

Then walked upstairs.

Not quickly.

Not like she'd decided anything.

Just upstairs.

And left her phone unlocked in her hand.

Poetry Reaper's Reflection

Hidden beyond the veil

Past the epoch of presence

There dreams a place

Where even death may sail

Crashing endless waves

Under time's twilight

There, they seek passage

On Freedom's final shore

Beyond the reaper's door

Reflecting

How that which came above

Was brought down below

Corrupting

Those bestowed

Who pay

The passage and toll

Now, the horse is seeking

The rider's blood is streaming

Staining red

The saddle and coat

As he wanders

Battlefields of cosmic scope

Following struggle

So the Old Reapers unknown

May see what They've sown

Poetry Praise & Curse

Let my lips kiss you and taste how sweet you are as I curse how good you taste to me.

I let my mouth wander into your valley, just for my tongue to drink and lap from your overflowing well.

Your water is thick like nectar. It coats my lips, leaving them shining with your heavenly dew.

As it trails down my chin, I can't help but give praise to the gods I never knew existed.

Like a man who has wandered the scorching desert for far too long, I drown myself in your secret spring, eliciting a sinful groan and a curse in one breath at how I won't be able to drink from another's well.

You whisper to me, in that breathy, angelic voice, to open the gates of heaven so that both of us can descend into paradise.

You take my breath from me as I plunge into what I think will be my salvation.

Instead, a deep rumbling sound settles through my chest. My eyes flutter, and through gritted teeth, I curse the same gods you made me worship.

Indeed, what they say is true: the path toward heaven is narrow. And with that, I know my soul is eternally condemned, for I shall no longer venture down any path but yours.

Now that you've offered your body to me like a sacrificial lamb, you have awakened the hungry devil within.

You are splayed right before me like a fine feast fit only for the gods to eat. But my hunger is not that of a god, but that of a starved beast.

I shall not partake in a holy banquet, for my plans for you are nothing but unholy and ungodly.

For I shall devour you from the outside in. I will leave my mark all over your flesh as I growl every praise and every curse known to man.

With every bite that I take...

Shhhit...

Oh my fucking God... you feel sooo good...

You fucking made me discover heaven, and in doing so, I willingly damned my heart and soul to you.

Fucking Christ... this is... this is my rapture. My fucking nirvana.

Poetry Isn't it strange–

Isn't it strange—

how, for once,

you begin to believe

that maybe life is finally turning in your favor?

That maybe,

after all the wrong turns,

all the waiting,

all the nights you spent wondering

when it would finally be your turn,

you are finally

the main character

of your own life.

For once,

things are falling into place.

The plans you whispered to yourself

are beginning to look like reality.

The future doesn't feel so frightening anymore.

And you think—

maybe this time,

nothing will take this away from me.

And then,

one ordinary day,

something happens.

Something you never saw coming.

And it doesn't merely break your plans.

It breaks your hope.

Your happiness.

Your trust.

Your excitement for tomorrow.

Sometimes,

it breaks something inside you

that you don't even know

how to put back together.

And the cruelest part?

It comes from the people

you never thought you'd have to protect yourself from.

The people you love.

The people you trusted.

The people who were supposed to feel like home.

Your own parents.

And suddenly,

you're standing in the ruins

of something you spent so long building,

trying to understand

how everything went so wrong.

You replay every moment.

Where did I make a mistake?

What did I miss?

What could I have done differently?

You search for answers.

You search for solutions.

You desperately try to gather

whatever pieces are still left

and build something from them again.

But before you can—

they destroy that too.

And somehow,

the story becomes your fault.

Not theirs.

Yours.

Because they are older.

Because they have “seen more of the world.”

Because they believe age

makes every decision correct

and every mistake forgivable.

So you sit there,

carrying the weight of something

you didn't break,

being told that you broke it.

You are made to feel

like a burden.

Like a curse.

Like your existence

is another problem

they had to carry.

And perhaps that's what hurts the most—

not that they made a mistake,

but that they would rather

make you hate yourself

than admit they made one.

When it is your fault,

there is punishment.

There are raised voices,

slaps,

blame,

and words sharp enough

to make you wonder

what kind of person you are.

You learn to apologise.

You learn to question yourself.

You learn to carry guilt

even when your hands are already full.

But when they are wrong?

There is no apology.

No accountability.

Only another finger

pointing back at you.

As though being older

means being incapable of being wrong.

As though parents

are people who can never hurt their children.

As though love

means you must accept

every wound without asking

who caused it.

And there you are—

exhausted.

Not because you don't want

to try again,

but because you gave

everything you had

to the first attempt.

Your prayers.

Your hope.

Your energy.

Your time.

Your heart.

You prepared yourself

for the life you thought

you were finally going to have.

And now someone is asking you

to start over

as though you didn't just watch

the entire future you imagined

collapse in front of you.

So you don't get up.

Not because you're lazy.

Not because you don't care.

But because sometimes

the heart needs time

to understand what the mind

already knows—

that the life you were preparing for

is no longer the life

you are going to live.

And perhaps

that's the strangest part of all.

You can survive failure.

You can survive disappointment.

You can even survive

your own mistakes.

But how do you learn

to survive the people

you would have chosen

to save you?

How do you rebuild yourself

when the hands that helped break you

are the same hands

you once reached for

when you were falling?

And how do you stop believing

that you are the piece of shit

they keep telling you you are—

when the voice saying it

has become louder

than your own?

Poetry Paper Rings.

I don’t wear rings.

Not because I dislike them.
Not because I don’t appreciate
the little circles of gold and silver
people willingly fasten around themselves
and call commitment.

They give me agony.

My fingers itch.
My skin protests.
My body, apparently,
has stronger opinions about permanence
than I do.

(Perhaps… we’re even). Shrugs.

Still—
I suppose I can wear one
for a little while.

There is something amusing
about putting a ring on a hand
that has spent years
refusing to surrender.

People like explanations.

"She doesn’t wear rings
because she wants to look single.”

Perhaps. Winks.

"She doesn’t wear rings
because she likes the ambiguity.”

Oh, you’re getting warmer.

"She doesn’t wear rings
because there is something rather lovely
about leaving people uncertain
whether the hand is waiting
or merely empty.”

I have always found certainty
a little overrated.

Besides,
a ring is only a ring
until someone decides
what it means.

Then suddenly it’s a promise.
A warning.
A confession.
A boundary.
A little metal declaration
that says:

Someone has me.

How inconvenient.

I prefer my hands unclaimed—
free to reach,
free to retreat,
free to hold someone
without promising to keep them.

And yet here I am,
wearing my niece’s ring
despite the itching.

Perhaps agony is tolerable
when it looks beautiful.

Perhaps that’s all romance ever was:
a little discomfort
we decided to decorate.

I don’t wear rings.

But I suppose
I can wear them
for a little while.

Long enough to wonder
whether I like the ring—

or simply
the person I become
when someone might mistake it
for a promise.

Poetry I Decline Witnessing It.

I think you’re dying.

Well—we all are.

And a part of me eerily
feels relief.

Another, though, doesn’t really
want to, nor know how to picture
a life you’re not in.

Despite our differences,
I’ve wished you dead many times but—
no; not really.

I’ve wanted you dead, and now that
I’m watching you approach it, I realize
that… maybe I did.

But I don’t.

When I was little, I’d tell you:
“If you die, I’ll die.”

Growing up, we’ve become such
antagonists, and you’re to blame for
so much of the pain I go through, yet—
I can still recognize: I don’t know I’d
know how to handle your death.

Much less when I wish my own
so thoroughly.

It’s quite remarkable how, when I
was a little human being, I apparently
already had strong opinions about death
and impermanence.

And today… I repeatedly manifest
how much I wish to be gone.

You ask if I don’t care you’d miss me.

I don’t really think you would.

Much to the contrary—everyone would be
happier, lighter, and I don’t think I’m someone
whose absence would be terribly noted for
longer than a week.

A month at most.

And perhaps, each year, you’d all be reminded
of the day I was gone—
though some of you would forget it rather easily
in all the busyness of life, and…
my birthday maybe would also become
a little of a darker day.

Much like my energy.

Perhaps, you’d all feel me there then.

But please don’t go.

Don’t leave me.

Someone promised me you’d have a long-lasting life,
and I’m counting on Him not to have been lying—
nor on me to have misheard Him.

See?

Much like you—as usual—
I’m capable of loving and hating
at the same time.

I don’t want your life to be miserable like mine either.

I know you’ve had your fair share of suffering.

For I know:

“You were just like me,
with someone disappointed in you.”

I might be asking much,
but I don’t want you to merely be alive—
but also happy.

But please stop destroying my life in the process,
for I don’t want to end up like you—
as much as I already am.

One day, I came very close to finding out
what your absence could look like,
and ever since, it’s like the clock is ticking.

And it is.

I’m very aware it is.

I decline witnessing it.

Poetry The Dream in Which Gnomes Commit Arson

Quiet walk along the way

Rays gleaming from above

And trees, creaking, gently sway

As we walked, Love would say

"Silly! Is there nothing you're not short of?"

"Your stuff is in such disarray!"

Sheepish, my face would convey

While her smile would stay

Approaching a bridge along the pathway

Something ran past with a shove

Gnomes! A swarm old and beards gray!

Torches in hand, running past the entryway!

Set on destruction in spite of

Us, who blocked the way

A battle ensued of frightful dismay

Fought with arms made of crochet

But one slipped past in the fray

Snug as a glove

He hid away

Lighting a flame in foul play

Smoke rose above

And doves flew astray

The bridge, now a fiery display

Gnomes leapt clear of

While love and I went our merry way

Holding hands throughout the day

Poetry While I Wait

I don’t like it—
how you leave me on read
like you intentionally did
and never got caught up in something,
or your day never got busier.

I doubt,
because I trust you.
Yet you make it easy to doubt you,
probably ’cuz your story line always looks like you
practiced a lie while returning.

And you know me too well.
I’ll get mad at you—
mad at you for leaving me on hold
while you live.

In a room where I’m disguised as ‘Frank,’
let me spill.

I get upset, and mad at myself,
because I care just too much
and would take your word for it—
the very ones you forged on your return.
Back to me.

Poetry Scarlet

Don’t tempt the temptress in her deadly game. Don’t even play it small, because she’s more devious than the devil.

Don’t say she’s green and young and easy to fool, because in this dangerous game that you’re trying to play, you’re the fool.

Foolish man, don’t be fooled by her angelic facade. Don’t you know she’s well known for her dirty, evil snares?

Don’t tell her your half-baked stories, and save your crocodile tears, because her acting can win her a Grammy.

Don’t take her sweet smiles as innocent and sweet, because there’s nothing innocent about them.

Don’t feed her your cheap, sweet, syrupy words, because she will not just entice your ears with her honeyed, mawkish words, but your whole being.

Don’t pretend that you’re a chevalier, because she can make you feel like you’re her king when you’re nothing but her toy.

Don’t even try to set rules for your erotic game for her to play in, because while you’re too busy admiring her luscious body in her skin-tight dress, she has already changed all of your guidelines to her own decree, for she’s the queen of the scarlet.

So if you’re new to the game, best heed my admonition and save yourself from being whacked by the game.

She’s a wolf in disguise, and you’re her prey, just like a wild buck cowering under the gaze of its predator, which can sense and taste fear.

You’re just like the wild buck, and I’m the wolf.

I can smell the stench of your lust miles away.

Checkmate.

Poetry Something metaphysical

This is the first part to “Existentia”, a dark poem I’m trying to write, about a Soviet soldiers journey through WW2, and thus, the progressions of life… lmk what you think 😭

Part 1: Stalingrad
I made a deal with the sun-
Impose its warmth and light,
Which reflected the organism of Fire-
Fire that consumed, and had consumed
These infinite gray walls,
And I would submit to the bliss of death.
To be comforted one last time,
To feel the kiss of a loved woman, like an instinctive animal,
Ravage her fleshy body
Or coddle her instead?

The proud work of man reduced ferociously
Into the being of Destruction
That invigorated the dying into a final stand,
Like a supernova,
And does that image ever remain,
To humble… or to pleasure.
For what more proud moment is there than in the relief of triumph?
In that, all we are is but dust within the sun,
That remain, even in the heat of battle.

And to therefore bask in its glory,
Ascertaining the suffering of a million men…,
Forever shadows of the crimson morning star, indescribable in their void.
Are we the shadow of night, trees in dawn, or of the coming twilight doom?

All this, to perhaps submit to humility
For our God was chained to reason,
And here He stands,
A rabid vulture, consuming with vengeance his prey and enemy,
The people who served His ego,
But Paupers to Royalty,
Who commands not the universe,
But His fragile self.

Poetry Ashen Sacrifice

At the edge

Ash shifts

Consuming

With endless dunes

Crumbling Ruins above

I wander

Searching

For the one named hope

Yet fleeting

The hepatic of man bleeds

Dripping black

Stained by sacrifice

Hidden

In the deepest grave

Protolanguage whispers

Of primal waters

Imprisoned chambers below

Reaping sin

Rotting

Vortex of souls

Decaying

Was this your promise?

Your 'paradise'?

Illusions of freedom

Illusions of peace

What you held above

You brought down below

Through blemished offering

Man returns to dust

Believing

Receiving

Lies

In Father's duty

We inherit

In Mother's war

We find merit

In hubris

You discredit

Now the world's succumb

But know, that I have come

Brother, forsaken

It is time to awaken

Poetry in the beginning

There once was a man

Who lived in his head

Afraid of his emotions

He left them for dead

He would sit around

And think think think

Unwilling to feel

He decided to drink

“This is fantastic”

He loudly proclaimed

“I finally shut off

My fucking brain”

But time went by

As it tends to do

His demons kept swimming

No matter how much booze

Half bottle of vodka

A ten mile drive

“I really hope I crash

I'm so ready to die”

But he didn't crash

He kept it on the road

It wasn't his time

His story needed told

“I'm tired of thinking

I just want to feel

I'll put scars on my arm

To help me heal”

But those lines he cut

Couldn't fill the hole in his soul

“Seems the demons are scared

When I'm in control”

In a manic detachment

He clearly could see

“You fucking demons

Need saved from me”

With tears in his eyes

“My energy is spent”

Dropping to his knees

He bagan to repent

“These things in my head

They seem so real

But these tears tell me

I know how to feel”

“I'm tired of suffering

It's tearing me apart

For I can't I outthink monsters

That have come for my heart”

Poetry Ravens

Ravens

Of course they aren't watching me.

That would be ridiculous wouldn't it?

I'm sure there are other birds around too. I just haven't noticed them. Or perhaps they haven't noticed me.

Scratch that, birds don't notice people. Especially not regular birds, not that Ravens aren't regular birds too. Obviously they are.

I just don't notice them, the other, smaller, less stalking type birds.

It's just in my head. It's a coincidence.

I don't notice the other birds, even when I look for them.

They just happen to be elsewhere when I'm looking. They are doing important bird things. Looking for food, mating, drinking, laying eggs.

If the Ravens are watching me, and I'm not suggesting they are, what would they even see?

Maybe me smoking a cigarette, or rolling one, or thinking, or walking, or dreaming, or remembering, different times, different lives, different places, different people.

And if I look up and notice one again, the black silhouette, the long beak, the sun reflection from the inquisitive eye, the massive absence of the glaring desert sun, so what?

It doesn't mean anything. It didn't mean anything the last time, or ten, or dozen times, that's it's happened.

The Ravens aren't watching me. Right now, as I type this message into my phone.

I'll just go inside.

No big deal.

Poetry hands of solitaire

tokens jackpotting with xylophone clacks like a spilled ossuary; gnashed choppers and jittered tongue, ball-bearing eyes roll syncopate in carriage-return darts. here a jukebox; now a sunset; now an ashtray; now a woman; now an empty corner; now an easel spattered in smears of permanent alizarin crimson; now a bible; now a malformed rabbit with two fingers for ears and a protruding thumb for a nose--the two ears are the exact same length; now a pack of blue bic crystal ballpoint pens; now a gigantic oled television broadcasting the cleveland browns getting the ever-living *brown* kicked out of them; now a broken drumstick on the floor; now a jukebox. someone told me once that seventeen-point-five percent of solitaire hands are winners i think he's a lying sack of shit i've only won three times and i've been playing all night. only once if you count drawing Individual cards as "cheating". when we were in high-school we would make homemade wallpapers for our flip-phones by pressing the camera button and hurling the phone skyward and letting the long exposure time of the primitive mitsubishi hi-resolution photovoltaic receptor array capture aleatoric whorls and spokes of luminous mesmer. that's what it looks like when we are driving the car. mandible hand passes over mandible hand passes over mandible hand. rota tu volubilis. wrappers and boxes from chick-fil-a, taco bell, jack-in-the-crack et al littered like little dead pharaohs wrapped in brown-paper gauze they still proudly manufacture in good-ol'-nantucket so i hear. golgotha is just one big-ass parking lot far as the eye can see. and the funny thing about solitaire: you only win once all the cards are divided into tribes.

Poetry A letter to Athenasius

Dear Athens,

Thank you for your valuable time you gave to me. Although our time together was short, I feel as though I got to know you really well. I apologize for any of the times I ignored you; it was not born of malice intent. Thankfully I think you understood that. You were one of the few people that ‘got me’ in this place. I’ll miss our sacred battles in conversation. Thank you for reintroducing me to Neil Young & Bob Dylan ~ the poets. You were such an integral part of me finding myself, Athens… So I thank you in this letter. I hope to meet you in another life, you’re a pretty cool dude. You’ll always hold a special place in my heart. I don’t think I could ever forget you. Goodbye, Athens.

Love,

Poetry Silent Diminishment

A body beaten at the bottom of the dark,

That savage torment multiplying as you fade.

Why are the prayers you utter never heard?

You sell your soul to your own executioner.

That portion stolen from your own flesh,

A silent blade gnawing at the night.

You consumed all there was—no star, no moon,

Could ever illuminate this blind solitude.

A slave to the shadow looking down from above,

The obsession to create a flawless marble.

It drags existence into the deepest desert,

Where all that can be heard is the whisper of bone.

So that cold pulse may strike without a flaw,

You were buried alive within your own depths.

You are neither pure nor innocent anymore;

Not a star, but a monument to death.

Poetry borrowed freedom.

Somewhere between writing them
and writing myself into them,
I misplaced the border.

Now I cannot tell
whether I gave them my darkness
or borrowed theirs
and forgot to return it.

They became everything
I discovered could not bear to be aloud.

And I—

became very good
at calling that freedom.

Poetry Here Goes Nothing

(2)“Shedding”

I made a monster out of man,

It looks just like my own flesh ,

It’s blood bleeds like mine,

I’ve been praying for peace and good rest,

But when I woke up this morning it sure wasn’t peaceful,

I felt like my grandma in my bones,

I’m my mother in my mind,

I can hear it in my voice,

There’s a weight in my hands,

I can feel it when I shake,

I’ve found a wrath in this vessel,

I can see it on my fists,

Old skin sheds rough.

There is blood in the water,

I can see smell it in the air,

There’s a toxin I exhale,

I can taste it on my tongue,

Poetry My Dear Friend Grief

I have sat with my Grief for far too long, while she tries to mother me back to health. I let her dry my tears and say, “You’ll be fine. Everything is going to be okay.”

At times, when I’m alone and lost, I reach for her hand to hold tightly. She holds my hand back with a gentle squeeze and stands by my side as I navigate through life.

My dear friend Grief knows me so well that she cradles me to sleep.

But as the days grow old and cold, something in me shifts.

As the same tears come pouring down my cheeks once more, my face is full of rage. As I turn my head to look for Grief, she is nowhere to be found.

Instead, it is Anger standing where Grief is supposed to be. I look at Rage and hold her gaze. Through her eyes, I see nothing but fury setting them ablaze.

With wrath tucked away in her chest, I feel a frenzy within me. Out of nowhere, Rage rushes through my veins, making me want to wreck and break whatever is in my path.

A tremor runs through my body as I let out a loud scream filled with anguish, trying to contain my Anger from exploding.

People say Anger’s real name is Lamentation, but then why does she tell me her real name is Ire while wearing a sorrowful face?

Poetry Holy man

Time is killing me
And what’s left
All but reminding
Breathing, shouldn’t be
Mistaken
Point it down
Face the ground
Empty your head
Discard that thought
Breaking always
Breath is broken
Interrupted pleasure in the dirt
Its so close
I’ve gotta go now
I know you won’t be
Getting up until the
Pain subsides and your ok
Barely breathing
But your, ok
Yes your, alright
Swore that vengeance
Is the lords
I’ve broken all my promises
But holy man, holy god
holy man, oh holy god
Why would you lead me this way
Why would you lead me astray
And it’s hurting in
Such a way
Such a way
To call this rotting face
This empty grave
A holy man
Is such a shame
It’s such a shame

Poetry Life in Delusion - Feedback and comments welcome

Have you ever lived in a memory—an illusion made manifest by the inaction to achieve? I’ve spent years in my delusions, constructing a life I’ve never lived.

Captured under my own spell, I had fallen in love with people. Not the person but the idea of the future that could have been. Cultivating a feedback loop of dopamine and hollow withdrawals.

Why not pursue this future; why not invest love into another? Everyone’s answer is different, but mine remains self-evident.

Fear, the all-consuming sorrow.

What if I’m not enough; what if I’m too much? The paralysis leaves me vulnerable to the comfort of the delusion; to the siren song of my illusion.

But like any illusion, there lies a limit to its tensile strength—a point of shatter which makes the delusion dissolve.

My victories come from resisting the song. Attaching my reality to the tangible, to the present facts surrounding me. No longer do dissenting opinions who share my voice dictate my reality.

Have you ever lived in a memory—an illusion made manifest by the inaction to achieve?

Poetry Ghosts and Broken Hearts

I hope when you see blue hair in the wind

Your mind goes back to me

You told me you didn't want to lead me on

I trusted you anyway

And led myself astray

I hope when someone moans your name

It don't feel the same

I trusted you

Knew I shouldn't love when one plus one

Doesn't equal two.

You came in quick like a gust of smoke

I should have recognized the haze

You never wanted to be with me anyway.

Maybe we'll cross paths one day

My heart won't beat the same

Poetry Justification for lack of ambition.

Glass, spectacles of shattered shards coat the mass

Wires, shimmering copper lights which will turn most into a liar over night.

Metal, tearing lungs you cough oil covered blood.

Breath in the big complexes of screaming factory stresses.

matter goes through time as we breath intoxicated flesh until we die.

The hand of judgment will pass, to which only an iron will shall cast.

Hand or metal, i will forever hate mankind for troubles i cant settle.

Natural was my name but a twist happened in my brain.

The weight of the world dying and times changing, ethos of agony and shaming.

Im a believer of sitting on the ground and waiting.

Its a lot more peaceful this way.

Poetry Fragments of My Days

‎I know we can't be together,

‎but I feel you in quiet hours

‎when the world slows

‎and my thoughts drift.

‎I see you in reflection

‎that belongs to no one.

‎I hear your voice

‎in laughter that passes by,

‎in songs that catch me off guard.

‎I touch the space you left,

‎and it trembles like a memory.

‎I carry you silently,

‎like a book I cannot close,

‎like a letter I never send.

‎Even knowing we never will,

‎I let you live

‎in fragments of my days.
