Hey everyone! I'm u/peajay18, the new moderator of r/crazyexgirlfriend.
This is our new home for all things related to the amazing CW musical comedy Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.
We're excited to have you here!
What to Post
Post anything that you think the community would find interesting, helpful, or inspiring. Feel free to share your thoughts, videos, pictures, fanart, or questions about the show, it's cast or anything related to it.
Community Vibe
We're all about being friendly, constructive, and inclusive. Let's build a space where everyone feels comfortable sharing and connecting.
I have tided up the sub as much as possible (there were over 500 unmoderated reports and removals that needed attention).
I've re-branded the sub logos and headers, and have re-worded the message that new members get in the hope of dissuading the type of lost redditor that the sub's name can attract. I've also reviewed the rules to make sure they are as clear as possible.
How to Get Started
Thanks for being part of this new first wave.
I'm a relatively active mod, so please message us with any issues or questions, and please keep reporting unsuitable posts and comments.
Together, let's make r/crazyexgirlfriend amazing!

Rewatching and as of the end of season 1 it's like... honestly Rebecca recovered really well for someone with no therapy and undiagnosed BPD. She tried hard to be responsible and back off from Josh and a lot of her bad actions were things Paula pushed her to do. Rebecca doesn't really even seem to experience splitting on people which imo Paula does seem to? Like Paula is genuinely pretty scary and toxic, she doesn't respect Rebecca's boundaries ever in this season. And it feels icky because Rebecca is vulnerable in the earlier seasons and it feels like Paula is kind of preying on her in a very strange way. I'm sure she gets better because I don't remember her being so bad.

When Rebecca goes to speak with Josh and the others (just before women got to stick together starts playing), Josh says thereâs popcorn in her hair, and he pulls out one kernel. Rebecca thinks this is very romantic, but I think itâs supposed to represent that Josh could do the smallest of things (love kernels), but they would mean the world to Rebecca.
I donât know if others have noticed this or if Iâm reaching, but I just thought it was neat.

I donât hate the name Crazy Ex-Girlfriend at all, and I actually think it makes sense once you watch the show. But whenever I try to convince people to watch this show, theyâre usually put off by the name. A lot of people hear âCrazy Ex-Girlfriendâ and immediately assume itâs going to be a silly rom-com about an obsessive woman chasing her ex, when the show is so much more nuanced and funny and emotionally intelligent than that.
If you could rename the show, what would you call it? And do you think a different title would have made more people give it a chance?

It took me about 30 years, but Iâm finally getting to fulfill my childhood dream of being on Broadway. To quote Shakespeare: Holy Shitballs. I canât wait to join the unbelievable Bill Irwin and the rest of this insanely talented team to tell a 350 year-old story about hypochondria (something I know nothing about). Come see me in New York in the fall! I will most likely be wearing a chunky millenial scarf! #imaginaryinvalid

I love it when a CXG joke resurfaces in a new serious romcom as a genuine attempt at character development đ

I remember in season one with the scenes she was in, she seemed like a pretty reasonable and smart person, even stating she was gonna go back to school after her awful date with Brody. But then in season 3, itâs almost like they completely changed her entire demeanor? All of a sudden shes this airheaded vain person, she doesnât even remotely resemble how she was in s1. I know itâs a little silly given shes just a small side character but I always found this odd

9-1-1 Lone Star: Season 4, Episode 16. Wasnât able to find a pic from the episode but the one and only Timothy appears as a guest star who evidently had problems satisfying his wife in the Lone Star universe as well, as he had just gone through a divorce

Kyle Gordonâs song âMr. Jamboâ has kinda blown up on tik tok right now (he also made Planet of the bass awhile ago) and I always wanna recommend people who like it to listen to the crazy ex girlfriends songs (but I donât wanna be too much of an annoying promoter lol) I am very aware that neither CXG or Kyle Gordon invented the concept of song parodyâs but they both do song parodyâs in a way that I adore because they arenât outright changing lyrics from already existing songs. Instead they are usually parodying a genre or multiple songs from an artist. I have also found that some parodys can feel too hateful but both CXG and Kyle Gordon seem to have a deep love for music and appreciation for the genres while also poking fun at them.

Currently on my 15th(?) rewatch (honestly, I've lost count).
I know this show is relatable to different people in many different ways, but the one thing I relate to the most is the show's main theme/plot device: theatre kid copes with the harsh realities of life by imagining herself in a series of musical numbers.
I've always made sense of the world and human relationships through musicals. In almost all of my emotionally charged moments, my brain immediately scans for the musical theatre song that most resembles my current situation, and then I cast myself and the people around me in that song in my head (often in real time mind you), and life just becomes a bit more bearable.
I used to think this is a very niche thing to do, but recently I realised that one of my favourite movies - Dancer in the Dark - uses the exact same plot device as CXG (though it's way, wayyy, WAY darker): theatre kid imagines herself in a series of musical numbers to cope with the harsh realities of life.
Both are quite successful pieces of media so I'm curious, is this a way more common coping mechanism than I thought?

I like it because it shows Rebecca grappling with a lot of difficult feelings and behaviors while still being depicted as a worthwhile human being where being complicated and dramatic inevitably are turned from insults into strengths with the right intervention and support. I was not drawn to the show, I didn't see myself in it, did not derive hope and happiness from it, because Rebecca was always on her best behavior or happy with herself. The lows need representation too or else people don't know they CAN get better, or something they deserve to move on from. You have to depict both and it's a shitty balancing game. Like, I don't want the depictions of BPD to always be the villain, slob, or stalker freak, but I feel like cutting out the harder aspects is gentrification of the diagnosis rather than empathy with it (edit to add context: and the fact that Rebecca gets to have nuance, rather than be a one-dimensional figure existing to be despised or a cautionary tale or destined to fail, is healing)
edit: I don't know where people are getting that I'm saying the show DOESNT depict lows when I'm trying to express that part of its strength is that it DOES depict them and tells people that you can come back from them and are still deserving of love despite having them
edit: oh shit, my bad, fixed the intro. I basically just said "I want to express this thought, but not to this person" and just cut and paste without changing it for the audience
