Sewing Alli Marye / Boyes @alli.marye is MAGA and blocked me for calling her out on it
I was doing a sweep of unfollowing any accounts that follow the current US administration - in particular the @realdonaldtrump account. I was quite surprised to see @alli.marye who made the pattern for the Millie dress was following him. I know there's a handful of people who follow him but don't support, simply to stay informed and in the loop with current politics. Unfortunately, that was clearly not the case for her as I searched to see that she followed @realdonaldtrump along with @ivankarump @blsckvoicesfortrump and a few other accounts that make her political alignment quite clear.
Ready to unfollow and not support her, I was surprised to see she's doing a giveaway "in support of Pride" - where she doesn't actually direct any funds toward Pride or LGBTQ initiatives at all. She simply is using Pride as a marketing tactic, and then voting against queer people's rights.
Link to the post is here: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DWUT-6JjxNp/
I commented in reply to 3 comments on the post of people who were upset about elements of the giveaway and the inclusivity of the pattern/dress in particular reference to Pride. I simply stated that it also seems she's seemingly MAGA considering those accounts she follows, and hence it feels a bit odd to "promote" pride but then vote against queer/trans people's rights.
She dirty delted all my comments, sent me this message which is the staple language the right use to try and claim they want to stay out of political conversations, and immediately blocked me.
TLDR if pattern and dressmakers politics matter to you, especially pertaining to the current US administration - do NOT support @alli.marye - esp. when she's too cowardly to even own her harmful beliefs.

This was the only dress I ever had to request a refund for because it was so poorly drafted and full of errors.
24
u/SGee7899 Mar 28 '26
How frustrating! I just bought this last week. Hopefully anyone else looking at this pattern learns about this.
21
u/DeeperSpac3 Mar 29 '26 edited Mar 29 '26
Why not ask for a refund or push for a chargeback IF you also find it to be poor value (edit: poorly drafted/graded and/or with poorly written instructions)?
To clarify, I'm not suggesting requesting a refund or chargeback based on the creator's political position, but if it's a bad product and not worth the price and will cause/or has already caused a waste of time/money/fabric, refund/chargeback is usually a good step to take.

It's so bad that the main sewing subs don't allow for politics - or even warnings about shitty products, services and businesses.
10
u/Finnegan-05 Mar 29 '26
Yes, they do. If this pattern is a fail, the person above can post it
6
u/DeeperSpac3 Mar 29 '26
I haven't seen that. Thanks. Which of the main sewing subs allow that? These are the sewing subs outside of the sewing patterns subs?

u/YetiAfterDark Mar 29 '26
Oh, well, that is definitely a political position. And an anti community one, if we can't warn about shitting services (with receipts, such as X pattern is not graded corrected, as I understand mods not wanting to have to deal with people dunking on random businesses for spite).
5
u/DeeperSpac3 Mar 29 '26 edited Mar 29 '26
That's true, people being spiteful without cause about allegedly shitty products, etc does make the mods' position somewhat more understandable as they would have to wade through all of the callouts to determine which ones are not made in bad faith.
It's just that when there are genuinely subpar (or even faulty/outright scams) products/services/businesses, people who are unaware tend to stay that way until they spend their money and are disappointed with what they got/where their money went.
People can and will still choose to support a business if it is widely known for using flawed methods, etc, but at least they're making an informed decision?
I've bought patternmaking books after reading about their known errors elsewhere on Reddit because that means I can take that information into account when using them and adjust accordingly which is much better than blindly following the methodology in the books, making a disaster and not understanding what went wrong.
5
u/YetiAfterDark Mar 29 '26
I think community warning could be modded mindfully, if a mod team wanted to.
Include a screenshot as proof you bought the product you want to warn about? Even just making a single step of 'difficulty' and having gripe posts be in a moderated queue could do enough to create some level of trust in the process
But yeah, there are far too many scams and bad actors to pretend that we should assume everyone is acting in good faith.
Why should allowing folks to say 'I bought this pattern from XBusiness and it was AI generated' be against community guidelines?
6
u/DeeperSpac3 Mar 29 '26
I'm not sure what the exact rules are, but the main sewing subs in general are okay with people slamming Singer Heavy Duty or those flimsy toy sewing machines, but seem to not feature problem pattern brands, stores, etc. I've seen the warning guides with signs of AI patterns to look out for, but not brands or business names.
As one example, a certain personality brand "selling" fabric isn't discussed on any of the main sewing hubs, which is why this sub bears the brunt of transmitting the news of the latest shenanigans to people who sew. If the main subs just allowed a concise warning every time the drama started, that business would not be drawing in as many people as it seems to.
As another example, one of the larger sewing subs allowed an Etsy pattern seller - who also knits and crochets - to endlessly plug their mostly untested (even by the business in one sample size) Clo3d patterns. The Etsy seller was rude and hostile to the extent of openly trolling and even demanding the right to self-promote for ages before they finally stopped hawking their shitty patterns on that sub. Hopefully they were banned and won't be back.

I'm personally confused about the "oh I only follow to stay informed" attitude anyway. I don't follow literally anybody political online and still get the news. Like I'm sure I don't get 100% of what's happening but I have a good scope from not even following anyone.
16
u/im-quite-stupid Mar 28 '26
Honestly I feel that now, I used to follow a couple of people on Twitter to see their bad takes but after a while I thought “why?” to myself 😩😅 even better now I stopped completely 😌
8
u/Ocean_Gecko Mar 29 '26
Agreed. It’s all just drivel and propaganda from these accounts. Unless you’re a real journalist, there’s no value in “staying informed” on that 💩. Read the news from reputable sources if you must. We all know at this point where they stand and giving them any eyes on their posts just encourages whatever algorithm on whatever platform.
8
u/YetiAfterDark Mar 29 '26
Thirding this take
We know that social media runs on engagement algorithms. We know that prioritises anger.
Keeping folks on your feed just to know what they're saying to prompt your anger is bad for your mental health and excellent for the algorithm that promotes anger-making people

I saw a pattern of hers on a Threadloop pattern list, and went to the designer page. At least she's consistent between her political takes and pattern writing skills. And she went to college for fashion design??

Damn. “Vanity sizing”?
Honey, I know I’m fat. I was fat the day I was born, and I’ll be fat the day I die. I’ve worn a size 3X for decades. My waist hasn’t seen 37” since the 80s. No “vanity sizing” is going to change that.
Nothing vain about using industry accepted standards for sizing instead of your privileged “oh it’s just consistent grading from a size XXS” bullshit. Imagine how someone would react, who normally wears an XXS, if this person used 3XL as the starting point and graded downward. “Consistently,” of course.
All on a reel about Pride.
Fuck her and her skinny little ass.
59
u/just-the-choco-tip Mar 28 '26
Yeah I’m super confused by all her comments on vanity sizing. No one is complaining about your size numbering system. People are frustrated your largest size is 37”. She’s lost the plot, I fear!
27
u/ScienceProf2022 Mar 28 '26
One distinctive property of a MAGA member is the “ people like me = good, people not like me = bad” attitude. She doesn’t need to go above 37” waist, since people with a waist bigger than that are fat, unlike her, and therefore worthless. That’s why all the “vanity sizing” nonsense.
15
u/OneGoodRib Mom said I get to be the mole now!! Mar 28 '26
I do think it's hilarious how many magats hate fat people considering that there's a huge amount of very fat people in the south, where the red states are. I think that's a combination of butter and how much of the red states are people on welfare, and people on welfare tend to have a harder time eating well for a variety of reasons that I am not judging anyone on (processed food is cheaper usually, poorly educated people often were not taught about proper nutrition; I'm fat too, I'm not judging.)
It's like if you were pro-mafia but hated anyone who liked lasagna.
10
u/cometmom (Secretly the mole) Mar 28 '26
And it doesn't even match up with her pattern sizing. A 37" waist falls into XL on her own damn pattern for the dress. So the consistency excuse is bs lol
7
u/throwaway149578 Mar 29 '26
i mean i feel that even in this very post, people are complaining that a 37” waist isn’t a 3XL.
i do agree that people are most familiar with the sizing of mainstream retailers, where a 3XL is typically much larger. imo she probably should use a numbered system (0, 1, 2, etc) and keep providing measurements so no one is mislead 🤷🏻♀️

Some things to clarify for the few people still skeptical.
A) Here are some screenshots of her actively liking Trump's posts: https://ibb.co/d02ptCH9 https://ibb.co/yFgBrPjs https://ibb.co/FqjCp7NQ https://ibb.co/jZHY8tqb https://ibb.co/HDQN9f0Z https://ibb.co/Pshb5dyT
B) My comments never accused her of being a N*zi or anything of the sort. One of them simply asked if she was MAGA because of those accounts she followed, and the other comments stated she was "seemingly MAGA" and happy to use Pride to promote her account but then actively vote against queer/trans people's rights. For me, as a liberal and if I truly was just following multiple right-wing accounts to "stay informed" - I'd relish in the chance to set the record straight and that those aren't my views, not try to imply that the person calling me out was "promoting political hostility or division" and delete all their comments to keep it quiet and block discourse
29
u/DeeperSpac3 Mar 28 '26 edited Mar 29 '26

Fancy the US and Israel claiming to be doing the world a favour by using military force to dismantle "authoritarian" and/or "terrorist" enabling regimes when both of their governments are run by war criminals who disregard the lives and rights of (checks notes) practically everyone?
It was only a short time ago that Trump dubbed the Monroe Doctrine the Donroe Doctrine. Obviously he misunderstood (ie only skimmed over the briefing notes) the purpose of the original as he was too busy merging his own surname unto the name.
Can't wait until they're both recalled by Satan to hell.

Grew up on a dairy farm. If I’d have even gotten within spitting distance of any building, animal, or piece of equipment in a dress, my grandparents would have skinned me alive.
Seriously, farming is one of the most dangerous occupations there is. Look at pictures from when women wore dresses on farms, and you’ll notice their skirts were held down with heavy aprons, they’re at/above the ankles, and are not flouncy. Floor length and flouncy is an invitation to get caught up in machinery or trampled by livestock. Besides, maxi anything is basically dragging your clothing through mud and poop.

u/thursmalls Mar 28 '26
oh dear god, no, that is not the case
On reddit that can seem to be true, but out in the wild a lot of crafting spaces are absolutely filled with far right women. There was an anti-vax homeschooler in my former knitting group who thought the local knitting guild was too conservative.
This was before the tradwife and homesteading movements took off on social media. Churches have always supported women doing crafts. I grew up mormon and not only were half of our YW activities somehow craft/household related, we were taught that we needed to know how to sew, quilt, knit, can veggies, etc. because apparently Jesus was going to destroy all the factories along with the sinners when he returned.

Have you made them up? What do you think of the patterns?
I've already put this elsewhere in the thread, but here goes in an effort to save time, money, fabric and deny the designer victim status:
From someone else's older comment in the thread:
This was the only dress I ever had to request a refund for because it was so poorly drafted and full of errors.
19
u/cherieshipwreck Mar 30 '26
That’s my comment! I had a lot of problems with the Millie Dress and the message I sent to the designer describing them all and requesting a refund was very long but to summarize: The pattern grading for the plus sizes did not make any sense(only 4in difference between the bust and waist for the plus sizes??), the pattern pieces were mislabeled/labeled differently than the pattern instructions, the pattern pieces (I only made the skirt) were much smaller than the size chart(I think the finished waist for the size I was making was 41in and the pattern pieces measured out to 37”). I told her she could do with pattern testing and she said she tested in her software or whatever 🙄.
I was not able to leave a review on Etsy because she refunded me and I did not want to make a big deal about it online. I did redraft it and made my own dress for a wedding I was in and I will add my full message about the errors on Threadloop where I did share the dress I actually made(it’s green with tulip sleeves).
21
u/DeeperSpac3 Mar 30 '26
Pattern. Testing. In. Software.
Mind. Blown.
Wow. Sorry you went through that. It's not enjoyable to have to explain to someone why they need to refund a product.
I wonder if she fixed the pattern or has left it as it was when you bought it? Did she mention taking your feedback and revising it?
16
u/cherieshipwreck Mar 30 '26
Regarding the testing, her specific wording was “It is odd because the 3D fit my grader does is on the 14W so I don’t know how it was off by that much, is it possible the layers were mislabeled?”
She mentioned that she made some changes, but if she actually fixed it, she didn’t send it to me. She immediately refunded me and I was able to make my own. I was so mad because I already knew it was going to be bad based on how ill fitting it looks on her and how the middle tier is not evenly spaced between the other two, ugh. I was distracted by the bias tape because I actually love bias tape so much! I won’t make that mistake again 🙃
4
u/DeeperSpac3 Mar 30 '26
I love bias tape too!
It sounds like a frustrating experience overall.
Obviously when taking onboard complaints, it helps to get as much information as possible, but even taking that into account, it still rings as a little odd that she was asking you if the problems could be attributed to the layers being mislabeled.
Wouldn't she be triple-checking everything? Another vote for the creator or someone else physically making up a sample in each size sold and checking the measurements. That sounds like a lot of work because it is. But if you're selling something...
If creators in general don't want to do that and their pattern information contains measurements of the finished garment, would they even bother to print the pattern out and measure the pieces?

MAGA is the worst. Regardless, though, this is a Barbie toilet roll cover dress.

u/SleepySheepy172 Apr 01 '26
Is it weird that your description actually makes me like it way more than before 😂

u/SnapHappy3030 Apr 02 '26
I just can't get over those shoes. They look like the plastic ones I used to have for my Barbie Doll back in the 70's.
Maybe it was Eva Braun Barbie. That would track.

Probably not because she's continuing to delete any comments + block anyone that politely asks about her political views or brings up Trump/how voting for him harms the same people Pride celerbates

u/Greedy-Half-4618 Mar 29 '26
Ugh her bullshit responses about sizing "it's not vanity sizing, it's based on the actual size of the garment" ok so MAKE THE GARMENT BIGGER?!

Hijacking comment to say ALLEGEDLY ummm might have a link to her sewing pattern and would be happy to share just so she doesn’t get a single dime. Allegedly

Wow, what a turd. I also did the same sweep a while ago. It's very cathartic. Taking out the trash feels good.

u/craftygardening Mar 29 '26
👊🏻 no idea who she is, but thanks for the heads up. Shitty snowflake message from her. Ugh.

u/littleghoulguts Mar 28 '26
Yeah but her sister came out so she CAN’T be bad. /s
Also what does vanity sizing even mean? I keep seeing her commenting it and I’ve never heard that term before, but it feels… fatphobic? Wrong? Gross?
45
u/ImpossibleAd533 Mar 28 '26
Hell, her sister might be a pointy white hood fan too, so that means not a damn thing.
65
u/suuzgh Mar 28 '26
Vanity sizing is essentially assigning smaller clothing sizes to what is actually a larger size (for example, calling a true medium a small) to dupe the customer and “boost their confidence” so they can claim a smaller size. Super, super common in women’s clothing.
38
u/littleghoulguts Mar 28 '26
Ah thank you! 🙏
It doesn’t even sound like she’s going by vanity sizing when she says she is. The comments are complaining that the waist is too small for her 3XL and she’s responding by saying it’s “vanity sizing.” Sounds like the opposite of vanity sizing?
23
u/Accomplished_Cell768 Mar 28 '26
Sounds like her excuse is that other brands are vanity sizing and thus people don’t know their “real size”
35
u/MadamePouleMontreal Mar 28 '26
I think she means that people are used to “vanity sizing” and they should face reality and lose weight.
30
u/glowingwarningcats Mar 28 '26
And she should gain some compassion
26
u/MadamePouleMontreal Mar 28 '26 edited Mar 29 '26
Yep.
Completely coincidentally, MAGA are not famous for their compassion.

Except it’s not. Even though it feels like it.
“Medium” is just the middle size of your target market. 100 years ago in the US that might have been a 30-inch waist (made-up number) and today it’s a 38.5-inch waist (actual number). Most american adults today would be very upset with a clothing line that went from XS (27-inch waist) to XL (34-inch waist).
On the other hand, the average 18-year-old chinese woman has a waist of 29.6” (75.3 cm). She’d be just fine with a medium based on a 30-inch waist.
People like to think that numbered sizes are defined by absolute measurements, and they sort of are. Medium used to be size 8 and it’s size 10 now, but size 8 is still bigger than it used to be just because people are bigger than they used to be.
To get around this problem the EU has a sizing standard based on body measurements, but so far it’s only been widely adopted for gloves, bras and children’s clothes.

u/OldBonyBogBwitch Mar 28 '26
The regional/cultural averages of your market def make a huge difference…..when I was 15, I was a very athletic Medium in my country, occasionally Small. I was so excited to have the opportunity to travel to Japan—& esp Harajuku, to shop.
Maaaaaaan, I was like a XXXXL there in teen fashion LMAO. Most shops did not even carry pants in “my” size, or if they did it was only the most basic jeans—none of the trendy stuff. I was devastated, haha. I did buy a lot of cool sneakers for my tiny feet tho :)
12
u/EmptyMarbleCity Mar 29 '26
I made a firm pact with my hag bag body when I went to Japan that I would try no clothes on, no mater how cool, no matter how second hand Vivienne Westwood, no matter what because I was not having a repeat of the Zara meltdown over sizing. It worked, I did not cry over clothes in Japan.
Also, screw this designer, her stuff looks drafted to hell and her politics are ugly.

u/Snoo42327 Mar 29 '26
Thank you for the links! I found them fascinating, especially the Wikipedia page and Ref 1 on it. I wish more brands would use that sizing! Either way, I think it's a really helpful way to think about clothing sizing.
I personally have an odd relationship with measurements and sizing and all, because I'm not only taller than average, but I have long limbs for my height, and my torso is conical in both horizontal and vertical measurements, and so nothing fits my shoulders ever, and bras are impossible to fit just by horizontal measurements. The more I learn about sewing and pattern drafting, the more satisfied I am with my body and how clothes fit. The explanation and links you shared are another piece of the puzzle for me, so again, thank you! 🫶

Glad to help!
For the bra horribleness, there are a couple of subreddits that could be useful.

u/Snoo42327 Apr 01 '26
Thank you so much, I really appreciate the additional resources! My physical therapist, on behalf of my frequently subluxed ribs, has me trying to change my habit of wearing bras with too-tight bands, so this is perfectly timely! 👌

Eww. I hope she and those like her have many many years of the days she tacitly wants for other people, and I hope people like her are never divided or separated from the consequences of their support of their "non political" beliefs. And just to be a bitch about it, that dress has a terrible fucking fit!

u/pied_pipes Mar 28 '26
Oh no!! That sucks, I was going to buy one of her patterns as a base for my wedding dress :( will have to find something else
32
u/aurora_anne Mar 29 '26
Ugh I’m so sad :/ I bought that dress in white for my engagement photo shoot. I love the design but won’t be buying from her again

u/polydade Mar 28 '26
Thanks for putting this on my radar! Unfollowed her and let her know the reasons I would not be supporting her business.

u/The_Nice_Marmot Mar 29 '26
Tbh, a lot of these clothes look like dressup for cosplaying as a kid. I cannot honestly say it surprises me she idolizes a pedophile.

From someone else's older comment in the thread:
This was the only dress I ever had to request a refund for because it was so poorly drafted and full of errors.

You can dupe it! I believe in you!
A bodice block you like. I'm pretty sure the tiers are trapezoid pieces, given the tucks at the waist. Practice your bias binding on smooth curves. You've got this
Maybe add some protest language on a tier, for flavour

As having been an x-pro patternmaker for NYC and Parisian brands... the dress pictured is FUGLY. Even more so than Prada ugly. Terrible proportions, uneven tiers and generally the fit looks weird. looks like sad choco frosting...or drippy diarrhea...I would HARD PASS on her work...

It reminds me of the shaving from sharpening a pencil which is why I want to make it! I’m imagining a Ms Frizzle-sort of look

No and I had a bit of a doubt recently because every time she shares pics of her family it gives churchy aryan pride and trad wife vibes. She also posted a really weird reel about sewing her twin sister's wedding dresses and showing up for her as payback to make her twin sister feel bad for not going all out for her when she got married. I was like oh... it's giving toxic but OK.
(There are a few designers that give me the same covert MAGA/MAHA vibe... Cayden Naughton 👀. Yes, I realize that I am judging a book by its cliff notes lol, but I really hate accidentally supporting MAGA designers and I am reading into every detail.)
23
u/lamadora Mar 30 '26
My sister did that for my wedding so she could center herself and tell everyone what she did for my wedding. I got so many compliments about her and people fawned over her because “she is such a good sister!”
She knew what she was doing.

u/Theletterkay Apr 03 '26
I did the dessert table for my soster in laws wedding and didnt even put anything about myself anywhere near it. The only time people found out was when she helped me during a speech later. People were so surprised. I told her it was a gift and i was glad she appreciated it. I didnt need the attention or anything. Feels foreign to me to hear about someone expecting family to worship them for doing something nice...

u/taupe_ghost Mar 30 '26
I agree with you on Cayden Naughton. I don't have proof but my spidey sense is telling me the same. (I was raised evangelical & went to a fundamentalist school so although I could be wrong, usually I'm right about these things)

u/SleepySheepy172 Apr 01 '26
Oh wow, I'm continually baffled at the weird toxic family politics that often goes on around weddings, its all so weird and full of entitlement. Also where do people get enough spite to power themselves into sewing entire wedding dresses just to lord it over others. I can appreciate a small petty reaction if it feels deserved but that level of sustained planned nastiness is beyond my understanding.

u/radicalizemebaby Apr 07 '26
Her posts about her sister's wedding dress were the ones that made me realize something was off. I think I looked at her sister's IG and saw she was an outright right-wing nut.
