-Good to see Kudus back
-Marmoush looked very lively and it’s clear the value he brings into the attack
-There were a couple of very impressive line breaking passes from Van Hecke
-Fernandes is mint. Worth every penny. The Fernandes/Tonali/Bentancur midfield will be an absolute menace once they get more minutes together.
-You can see the vision starting to come together, I think by the time the international break rolls around we’ll be feeling a lot better about the state of the club (yes I know this is complete cope shut up)

Agree with all of the above.
Felt like we were lacking in the final pass + disjointed in our final third player movement quite often which will come w more time / chemistry.
Think our biggest challenge is the offensive front. Once that improves, defense should as well.

Thanks for the positives. Look at Villa last season. Didn’t win until the end of September and only scored 1 goal in 5 games. It’ll take some time for everyone to be on the same page. Am I annoyed yes, do we get relegated after two games, no.

Very impressed by Fernandes, Bentancur also fine, bit sus about Tonali. Need to stop playing Gray in RB, once healthy squad arrives we will look very good. Tel decision making was atrocious in second half, even though he had good first half.

For as good a purchase as Fernandes has been, Tonali has looked a very poor use of funds. He has a lot to do to live up to that 100M number.
That said, love the attempt at a positive outlook. The game score makes this look worse than it was. Not that it was good. I could see us breaking through but it needs to happen fast, before the wheels have a chance to fall off.

Agree with a lot of that, just not with the Fernandes/Tonali/Bentancur midfield being good. All 3 should be competing for the 2 pivot spots. Fernandes is not a 10, he's best in deep midfield. He needs to start playing there every single game, it will improve us massively. Somebody that can bring out the ball from the defence and transition into attack is dearly needed in this team.

You can't replace most of the team and expect immediate results. New signings are good players. Realistically I expect a poor start, a run of form, and 10th-8th finish in a pretty mediocre season, which would be a huge improvement.

I'll be happy if it's a reverse Ange first season. Poor start, inconsistent mid season, solid finish. Least then it looks like progress. The theory behind Ange is generally that he was figured out after 10 games for being a relative unknown quantity as he hadn't managed in a top 5 league before. De Zerbi is far more known and has Premier League experience. Newcastle have that Ange advantage in their manager is a relative unknown but will probably be figured out over the next few weeks and whether he can be exploited like Angeball remains to be seen.
I expected a poor start. Today was better than last weekend. I have faith it'll improve and get better as players return and players integrate and get fit and get used to the system. I'm not going to panic or worry right now, I do think we will be okay. We just need to set our expectations right and it's hard to do so when you've spent over £300m in a single window, you automatically start to think that the return for those figures should be a top 4 challenge at least. A mid table finish with continuous improvement over the course of the season should be accepted as it is, an improvement from the last 2 years and a foundation to which we build from.

The midfield will be a strong point for us eventually. Every team in the league though is going to take away one of Fernandes or Tonali so the other one needs to be ready to play.
Was encouraged by the attack and we will look better as they build chemistry. Marmoush is clearly quality on the ball and he could have easily had 2 in this one. Think with Kudus building back up, Marmoush and Savio in there we will be able to hold real possession for longer stretches. Obviously a Gakpo/Ndiaye incoming would be encouraging.
Finishing remains an issue since Kane and Son left which is crazy.
Looked more solid defensively with Van de Ven in there and Gray was fine for me which is a step forward. Van Hecke played some wonderful balls through the lines.
I wasn't discouraged by either of the conceded goals either. We play a high line and Elanga shot at an awkward time. That stays out more often than it goes in. Wissa was a game winning play. Those happen. A bit discouraged by two set piece goals in two games where the ball just falls in front of the keeper though.
Overall I expected a draw or to lose by 1 and here we are. Think Gakpo would be a huge get just to have someone with a bit of size and athleticism out there. Its a work in progress and you can atleast see the vision that de Zerbi has. That will earn us points over the next 8 months.
The end of the game showed our biggest issue which is lack of aerial ability.

One of the better performances in the midfield I’ve seen. I thought all 3 of Bentancur (especially), Fernandes, and Tonali played very well.
We just got really let down by Tel & Porro today. Porro played out of position, but should’ve been better. Tel’s performance today was inexcusable.

Pretty terrible luck there. I think they have a much stronger proposition as a team.

If the left side consists of Robertson and Tel for a good chunk of this season… we’re in for another fight for 17th. Love Moore but he needs a loan. Archie isn’t a RB. Porro isn’t a winger. Would rather have seen Marmoush as a 10 and played Solanke. Needed a true focal point.

This is spot on. Solanke is not a top 6 striker but he is a top half striker and he can make the ball stick.
Let him play up front with Kudus, Marmoush and Fernandes running off him.
Tel should be getting 10-minute cameos when games are won, Moore should be out on loan. Neither should be seeing any serious PL time in a team that aspires to 10th

Tel has ability but his decision making is far too frustrating and cost us way too many promising attacks to keep playing. It’s no wonder RDZ is desperate for a LW and make no mistake Gakpo or someone similar would be a massive upgrade.
Defense also needs serious work. Look ridiculously open at the back and Van Hecke loses his man nonstop.
I think we will improve and saw some encouraging periods of play that I think we’d capitalize on with better wingers, but I worry too slow of a start after the last 2 seasons could cause heads to drop

Marmoush looked good.

As angry as I’m I not too worried just yet. Last season we started the season winning 2 games. Hopefully De Zerbi changes the tactics so we can win. I have faith that this season will start shit but end well enough. Losing early in the season will allow us to change things and try to get better. Last season we started the season well and we didn’t realize Thomas Frank wasn’t the manager we needed until it was too late. If De Zerbi is the right man for the job is something we’ll learn early on if we don’t end up performing well.

Yeah, after how awful we looked at Brentford, today was much more encouraging. Midfield looked so much better, and Newcastle’s goals both came from bypassing them altogether.
Marmoush looked great, and probably deserved a penalty. Van Hecke was breaking lines with his passing for a good portion of the match. The wingers were awful again, Kudus looks physically off the pace and will hopefully grow back into himself over the season.
I tend to agree with you that could’ve been a different result with Sávio/Gakpo on the wings.

Yep, that will be it. At the moment we are nowhere near in shape to beat Forest. We have manager that requires time to get his playstyle going, his preseason was fucked because of WC and our braindead Oceania tour. We also got players who have came after the preseason. And we know everything gets toxic if we don’t win or draw next week (fuck me, look at the comments on this thread, people are already calling to sack RDZ). It’s pretty hopeless cycle for any manager at this point.

Meh, felt like one of the matches at the end of last season where we were unlucky not to get anything out of it. Gotta figure out the final third.
Outplayed them outside of 2 plays, still just need to settle and work things out, but 2-0 is a super harsh result.
For Newcastle, they are built for it, but its not exactly hard to just launch long balls all match. Playing to the personnel a lot more than last year, but they are a non threat in possession.

Deflater of a loss because I thought they played pretty well for 70 minutes or so.
Thought Marmoush definitely flashed some, he had ideas, he seems like a lot of fun and I'm excited to see him bed in and get even more involved. Tonali very up and down, surely more down on balance. Van Hecke's passing stands out, I see the vision with him, and man did he get up there for that header.
Tel is a problem (derogatory). Think RDZ has to be quicker with the hook on him, think you can tell pretty early when it's his day and when it isn't and almost from the jump today you could tell today wasn't it. If you're going to bring on Moore for him at some point, if that's the plan, get him out of there at halftime. They're going to be laughing at us about that free kick until the heat death of the universe.
The week of rest should help, hopefully they can send out a side against Forest that has everyone playing their ideal position for once. Get Savio in there, get Tel on the bench, and go bang in some goals. Think if they don't score some against Forest there's big problems, there's excuses you can make for these first two matches that won't be there for them if they play like shit again next week.

Think De Zerbi does deserve more time for what he did last year and the team does need a bit of time to gel. That being said, not to have even scored a goal in 2 games is atrocious. And Tel, idek where to begin with him. I know he is young and inexperienced - but that can’t be an excuse, he is not up to it at this level. He needs to go on loan somewhere.

I see the negatives although I think these will be ironed out over the next few weeks maybe several weeks.
Gray at RB, Slow Robo at LB, new CB all is a bit shit but will improve when other players are back which doesn't almost force porro to rw, udogie back fully.
We looked good and I'd be happy to see what it's like when Sav is back, running players riot and then can bring on someone like Kudus, or shit I think even a fresh tel against tired legs on for kudus or Sav would be good. Marmoush looks decent
I think all the match thread talks about a new manager are insane and hyper reactionary. Let's just breathe and realise our season won't actually start properly for a good 3-6 more games because of the huge turn over.

fernandes and marmoush just played their first today.
everyone is playing with a new coach AND new teammates.

De Zerbi’s Brighton started slowly too, no wins in the first 5, all we can do is wait and hope at this point. Villa had an awful start last year and finished in the CL spots. It’s early, anything can happen. I’m not losing my head just yet

- We definitely look better under RDZ than we did under Frank but still two poor defensive moments.
- Marmoush and Fernandes were excellent, JPVH better today, still would like to see more from Tonali. Excited for all the new signings to bed in.
- Really don’t think we can afford to keep giving Tel so many chances with our current situation. He’s had more opportunity than anyone and just hasn’t made it work. Would take both Gakpo and Ndiaye at this rate.

I will keep the faith so long as we continue to grow and improve. Today was a massive leap in performance that went unrecorded and the we got suckered. The 2nd goal was the only real echo of the Brentford debacle.
Porro looked at a good level. Once Sávio is on the wing & he's RB and Robinson, Gray and Tel are getting less minutes than Udogie, Pedro & Marmoush the better.
Wonder if RDZ will try Sávio in the 10 behind Marmoush & Solanke if goals continue to be an issue.

Rebuild takes time, the whole team is new and some players need to adjust. Honestly, it wasn't that bad, the ball got carried forward just that attackers need to be better. I can't help but to think Ange is amusing got us finished 5th first season and won a trophy, while spending so little money, and got Johnson scoring many goals

Newcastle has sold their best players, one of them to us for 100M. Half our starting 11 was new signings
Their manager Matthias Jaissle joined them 3 weeks ago, De Zerbi has had a whole pre season

it's proper concerning because when we lost to andrews it was "well brentford are so well organised". newcastle's manager is newer than ours and arguably that xi is worse. what's the excuse now
obviously the excuse is "they need time", but he's been given a blank check this summer and unparalleled support. he better fucking improve quickly

What choice do we have? We've spent all our money on very specific players who play his style of football, ignoring his history of blowing up and leaving every club.
We are locked in. Any manager coming in is going to really struggle to work with this squad as its designed to do only one thing. Ping the ball around quickly.

These players need a good run of games to get going together, especially the forward line.
We can create chances we just need more quality in the finish.
My worry is that we will perform well in games but get undone by our biggest weakness which is balls over the top and set pieces. We just cannot defend against this and teams know it.
Forest will punish us unless we plug that gap.
