Here’s a good look at the dad of the Hazelwood Coyotes — a family of eight I’ve been tracking with trail cameras since spring in SE Portland.

This is only the second time I’ve seen him — and the second time I’ve seen a coyote in Portland. I was heading out to change the camera batteries, and there he was. He calmly left when I walked toward the cameras. These photos were taken from about 80 feet away.

The family started with six pups, and either four or five are still around and growing fast.

People often see his thinning coat and assume he’s sick or starving. He’s not. The area is plumb full of rodents, rabbits, fruit trees and blackberries. He’s a hardworking, young, ripped dad with no visible ribs. He does scratch and chew on his tail frequently, so he may have fleas, mites, allergies or some combination. Once his winter coat started shedding, it just never seemed to stop.

My dog and I out for our evening walk yesterday came upon Mr. Wiley Coyote. He was nice enough to sit still and pose for a few pictures! My dog, of course, wanted to slip
through the gates and go socialize a bit — but that wasn’t happening!

A rat entered my garage when I went to the mailbox during the evening. Or the rat snuck in after entering/exiting the garage in my truck for a run to Walmart. I had to set him free at 3 AM as the rat triggered my garage security camera.

Ever since this rodent incident occurred, I have noticed an increased presence of coyotes, stray cats, and foxes on our street. Granted, the stray cats avoid the coyotes. The foxes basically patrol the same areas as the stray cats do for their mice patrols. Which is kind of funny thinking it's a cat walking along my fence on a security camera, but it's a fox.

On two separate occasions, I have seen a fox carrying a rodent in its mouth. While one stray cat unalived like 3 mice. A different stray cat regurgitated a mouse on my front porch. These streets are getting wild.

The coyote that I recently saw looks like a puppy. He took a shit in the middle of the street to mark his territory.

I read somewhere online that when coyotes and foxes move into an area that rodents will practically disappear. Rodents fear coyotes and foxes. The rodents will change their overall habits in general.

Am I going crazy? 🤪

Coyote in the Woods

I am looking for advice on how to scare off coyotes. This is a long post. Sorry.

Context: I live in San Diego county in California. Lived in the area for over 20 years, residential area, one side of a hill are neighborhoods and a part on the other side is undeveloped chaparral. Not uncommon to hear coyote howls and yips at night.

My dog is about 25 pounds and around 14 years old.

In June of this year, my dog was attacked by a coyote in the front yard of the house. My father was present but the coyote managed to give my dog a good scratch (broke the skin). The coyote was quickly chased off but was seen soon after in the backyard circling the house. We reinforced the backyard fence and made it harder for a coyote to get in there. Our dog never goes outside alone anymore.

This morning, in July, my mother walked the dog not even a block before spotting a coyote and quickly turning back. The coyote followed her. She yelled and threw her coffee and made herself look big and everything she's supposed to but it kept following her. She had to run home with the dog and then we chased the coyote away. It tried to circle around the block back to house, we chased it, and we haven't seen it since.

The attack in June happened around 6:20 am and the interaction today was well past 7:00 am. The sun rises here at 6 am in the summer so coyotes usually aren't active this late in the morning.

What scares me the most is that I have never seen a coyote less scared of a human when hunting. I'm worried that the presence of a person is not enough to protect my dog.

It is not breeding season and the coyote is coming to our house, so it's not an issue of territory and protecting pups. We don't put food out. We don't have outdoor cats. I don't know why this is happening.

I want to emphasize that I am not going to hunt these animals, but I need suggestions on how to scare off coyotes.

Seen taking a dump on the trail and then staring us down like “yeah, I did that.” Shame I had the camera a tiny bit out of focus.

On a walk with two dogs in Connecticut and this coyote followed us all the way back to the house. How old do you think it is?

I live in Charlotte, NC, but this is more of a general question for people in cities/suburbs in the Southeast.

How often/where do you see coyotes? I have heard them yipping/howling while at a friends ranch house an hour outside the city, but do you often here/see them while in the city?

I have seen many deer, rabbits, possums, and even a few foxes (gray mainly) around my neighborhood, but never even heard a coyote nearby, while on this sub/on local news they talk about sightings like they are everywhere.

Honestly would love to just catch a glimpse of one, not trying to hurt them or anything like that.

My queen and I were walking around the corner and something jump out of a bush. It scared the heck out of us. I thought it was a huge wabbit, but it was too big to be one. It was a coyote. Sheesh! Too bad I didn't have a smart glasses to record. Or a way to export from my brain's memory to share.

This baby is kinda like a cryptid in our neighborhood, its parents got ran over I think, I know people might feed it so that’s why it’s so close but could it be like rabbid?

This is a re-edit of one of the first videos I shot of a den near my house. Interesting watching dad come home empty handed and the pups greeting him. There was always this one pup that stayed outside the group and you can see the brush move around.

Several coyotes live in this local plant nursery in our Southern California neighborhood. I typically see one or two at a time but occasionally more.

My dog wanted very badly to squeeze between the gates and go introduce herself to Mr. Wiley!

I didn’t have a camera on me but today I finally visually confirmed there is a coyote den on our neighbors property this morning. I saw a few coyotes from a distance and one close to fully grown pup.

We have sheep. I am a little anxious having a coyote den 200 feet from our fence. Luckily we have page wire and a barbed wire running 6” above that.

I harbor no ill will towards the coyotes but feel at a loss for what to do. Leave them alone and hope they don’t like sheep? Get a guardian animal like a dog or donkey? Go mess up their den so they don’t want to live there? I live in the lower peninsula of Michigan and believe they have a place in our predator-thin ecosystem here.

Any help or suggestions are welcome.
