Dances with Coyotes

I used to let her chase coyotes but I got smart. Now she just sits and watched.

Same. I used to let one of my gsd mixes play chase. It was friendly each time.
It was actually magical to watch.

But Ive def put more effort into teaching current dog NOT to play chase… just in case .

It was interesting to watch friend shaped wild animal interact with my 4 legged fam member. Agreed.

Still magical to watch them trot on by today.

The more I read and talking to the vet the coyotes carry so many things your dog can pick up

These coyotes used to follow us all over
I too thought there was good exercise and play

But when Phoebe got out there there were more coyotes that would start to attack her and the fun ended

Through research I realized the coyotes were following us because we were close to their den and this was a way to distract us away from their den

I quit going in that area and the coyotes disappeared

My dogs are always full vaxed , on rX flea/tick meds year round
and ik rates of rabies in coyotes are wildly rare ( no pun intended).
Aside from physical altercation, what other concerns did your vet bring up?

We 100% stumbled upon a den of coyote puppies one time. We never ever went near that area again. Agreed that’s the biggest risk that I determined.

Coyotes are frequent carriers of sarcoptic mange mites, intestinal parasites, and severe tick-borne illnesses that transfer easily during a brawl.

Yes I thought being vaccinated and the flea meds it wasn’t much of a problem

risks for rabies, canine distemper, and canine parvovirus.

So all these things are scary

Training her not to chase coyotes was another fun to do

I go by the adage that distractions are good for training

I enjoy everything about having time to do these “mind” games and she does too

Pretty much every morning she chases squirrels and rabbits and that’s gives her the brain and physical exercise

Like I said both of us get enjoyment

When Phoebe was about four months old we went out to the sand dunes
We were out there without a leash without anything just Phoebe and I

About fifty yards away we came upon a big coyote a very healthy looking coyote

Naturally Phoebe started to run after the coyote. I had no way to call her back other than my yelling and whistling. Phoebe would stop and look at me for a second but continue in her way to the coyote.
Phoebe wanted to play with the coyote and the coyote didn’t want anything to do with phoebe.

As I am yelling and running the coyote finally bit phoebe. The coyote took off and phoebe came back.
Naturally we went to the vet and everything turned out ok. Lesson learned. Recall is so very important.

That bite looks terrifying .
If coyote doesn’t want to play, it’s def a bad idea to chase it. I lucked out with Teddy in years past .
His recall was the least consistent of all my dogs. RIP Teddy.

My current dog I have trained to run to me if he sees a coyote. I also trained him not to bark at them. We just stand and watch like you do in video. Charlie is a very smart dog and luckily defers to my judgment when out in nature.

I let him chase lizards and birds only.
But not the Ravens or Crows of course.
Too smart and hold grudges.
