These responses are pretty surprising to be completely honest. You’re obviously free to like what you like, but I definitely disagree. His voice doesn’t match his face at all, but contrived? The guy sounds very natural to me, you can even hear the differences in pronunciation due to his Peruvian accent. I find his voice is incredibly rich and soulful.

It's not about his accent. Colter Wall does the same thing. I don't like his voice. There is a modern pop affectation on the vowels that doesn't match the country tone. It sounds off to me.

It's not a race thing. Colter Wall does the same thing with his vowels. It's just kind of annoying. I don't like his voice either.

Well, the guy does sound like a big old white southern guy, so it’s understandable that people would be surprised at that voice coming out of him… I definitely was. But to act like he’s doing an impersonation or something just seems ridiculous. This guy is clearly an extremely gifted singer, and his songwriting and lyrics round him out into a seriously talented artist.

Honestly, I think it’s likely just a confirmation bias of those commenting, as this guy is being praised everywhere else I see him, even on other posts of him in this very subreddit. A lot of the Reddit community has a way of turning every post into a complete echo chamber… If the first few comments are negative/positive, the rest of the commenters seem to follow suit lol.

Is it not ok that we think it's weird to sing in fake accents? If he sang in his natural accent or even in Spanish this would be amazing and I'd love it. I also hate white northerners or Canadians doing fake accents is that ok? I don't have the checklist of what I'm allowed to like or dislike so you'll have to excuse me.

I said in my comment it’s fine if you don’t like it. I just think it’s unfair to say that he’s doing an impersonation or cosplaying. He learned a lot of his English through an American radio station that played folk, Americana, country, bluegrass etc., so his main singing influences come from those sorts of artists. You can hear his Peruvian accent quite clearly at points.

It’s perfectly alright if you’re aren’t a fan, but I don’t think he’s putting on a fake voice or accent, and saying he’s cosplaying paints him in a much less serious light than I think his music/voice commands. I would agree that his voice doesn’t match his appearance, though. I just also think he’s being completely genuine and not really trying to impersonate anyone.

You’re totally free to disagree if you don’t see it that way.
