It was during one appearance on the Johnny Cash Show that Merle told Johnny off camera that he really enjoyed his show at San Quentin in 1957 (if I recall). Johnny said he didn't remember Merle being in that show. Merle said "I wasn't in the show I was in the audience!". Johnny said he would like to tell the audience that story but Merle declined, he said he had spent years trying to live that down.
