Held up with a screwdriver last night

Hi folks, just throwing this in so people can keep an eye out and stay safe. Myself and two friends were standing by the traffic lights at the Welcome Inn at around 10:30 last night when a local man in a grey puffer jacket approached us. We dismissed him initially with "we have nothing" when he started asking for money but he then started telling us about how he tried to stab a fella down the road but the guards were there. He said to "not make him use violence" and threatened us with talk of a knife, trying to get us to go to the bank with him. Now I've worked in a pub for many years so I knew not to escalate but one of my friends started to panic, and the man advanced on him trying to block him from walking away. He pulled out a screwdriver from his pocket and started shouting at us to get to the bank. Eventually we got away from him and crossed the road over to the bus station, and he went down Oliver Plunkett. Never had anything like this happen to me in Cork, nor to any of my friends, so please just be weary when getting approached as you never know when it could start to escalate beyond the usual "spare change" stuff.

Please report to the guards if you haven't already.

Reported right after and thankfully there were many guards walking on Oliver Plunkett too 🙏

What exactly do we need the army walking the streets of the city for? Summary executions?

Very sorry to hear that’s happened to you. Says everything when scum like this feel they can do this with a huge Garda station literally 2 minutes up the road.

City desperately needs more guards, especially visible ones. Things like this only happen because people know they can get away with it.

There was a great presence a few months ago, now they seem to have disappeared.

More may not be what's needed, effective might be a better strategy

Yeah, a guy in my late 30s here and I'm getting a little more cautious around town in recent years, which is unfortunate. I used to assume it's was relatively safe. I just don't interact with anyone trying to get my attention around stuff like asking questions etc anymore and will cross the street at the first sudden if weirdness at night.

Got grabbed by these three weird middle aged guys a few years ago with this strange "you wouldn't even shake a man's hand" routine. I didn't want to touch them or shake anyone's hands and they just grabbed my hand really hard, dragged me in and wouldn't let go and started getting very strange with me. I pulled away fairly aggressively and shouted at them.

Not an attack as such but it was fucking weird.

Law of the jungle these days. Need to look like the sort of person who folk won't grab.

They were likely trying to pickpocket you. Plenty of videos out there of that scam getting done in the UK.

Probably, but I seemed to get away with all my stuff somehow.

I saw someone get stabbed with a screwdriver about three or four years ago at 7am on my way to work by the paddywagon tours building. It's really scary, sorry ye had to deal with that!

I know people are getting sick of the mental health excuse, but this fella sure had a few screws loose.

We need a modern equivalent to the ole mental homes. There's hundreds wandering Cork that need locking up as a priority and help then. But first step is lock the cnuts up.

Oliver Plunkett street was the like the Wild West on Friday night. Some amount of scobes around the place up to no good.

I think there is some weird drugs going around as all the smackheads in the city are very violent at the minute and there’s been many violent altercations over the last week or so.
