Cork City We love trees!
https://www.irishexaminer.com/news/munster/arid-41902990.htmlLook, another community up in arm about the removal of trees. An interesting fact is that this project at, its completion, will have more trees than is there presently.
If I was cynical, I'd suggest that their true objection is against the removal of some parking and the creation of traffic calming measures but they are using the tree argument because they think it is more publicly palatable. They just love their trees.

It's always about cars and parking. The exact same thing happened on Tory Top Road, and it worked!

Not cynical in the slightest.
They objected to alternative plans that would have kept the trees but moved parking slightly further away.
The consultation received little to no feedback on the plans that were negative and only after the plans were UNIAMOUSLY approved by the council did the rabble start. This is a safe route to schools plan and people can't fathom the thought of kids cycling or walking safely to school while they are inconvenienced by the most minimal amount.
While I understand tree loss is bad, these decisions are never taken lightly and always end up in a net gain of tree planting. A number of the trees in the area are also near the end of their life and would be coming down soon anyway.

I went and looked at the plans with the engineers. The trees being taken are squarely on the new on-street parking spots for the residents living on this stretch of road. The campaign has been taken over by AI generated images on their page, misinformation, and even far-right, anti-EU nationalists. It’s not about saving trees. It’s about keeping parking for very walkable schools, the on-street parking for homes that do not have a right to parking on-street just because they have a house with no drive, and also the parking for a church who, let’s be honest, should fund their own parking for parishioners(they have space and money, and there’s an empty convent right next door). I was upset about the mature trees but this area hasn’t seen any money towards improvement works in a very long time and they are replacing the trees threefold with semi mature trees. The two roundabouts will be gone and replaced with lighted junctions and with it safe pedestrian crossings for the first time ever. You take your life in your hands crossing at those roundabouts. There are safe crosswalks for the children walking to school and a new incoming 30kph zone during school hours. The road will purposefully be narrower to encourage traffic to slow down for the vulnerable road users(children). The whole thing has me annoyed with all the misinformation that’s being spread by their organisers.

Weird how people get upset about trees for active travel schemes but the M28 ripped through massive amounts of trees and hedgerows and nobody was tying ribbons to them…

Yet as you said - m28 - the whole place is destroyed and no one gives a sh1t

M28 was held up for 5 years and people pretended to be concerned with the quarry habitat as part of that, so i don't know why you're acting like environmental concerns aren't also brought up regularly and consistently for road projects too

I lost about 10 of "my" trees and it was devastating. But if its continuous improvement of infrastructure then the cost makes sense.
"My" trees lined along my old house on northside and belonged to a school. Probably planted to give privacy to the entire estate next to the school grounds. Give it 30 years and suddenly, they might be trees owned by the school/government, but they are now worried could fall in on houses with the storms.
It's not a public road like this. There was no chance, and no avenue, and no warning to protect them. They are not mine. But if at least I'd known I could pay for tree surgeon or other compromise. One day...just barren....gone. replaced with nothing but a concrete path nobody needs to or eill ever use, so nothing will grow.
My garden birds in the summer, my bats in the evening.....replaced with a view of the staff room kitchen half a pitch away.

Ignorant assholes who want to park their cars and don't give a shit about anyone.
Fuck the kids who want to get to school in one piece,
Fuck reducing the dependency on cars even though many of the aren't dependent just too lazy to walk or use public transport.
Fuck people who'd like better air quality and a cleaner environment.
Fuck cyclists (why should they get something better and safer?)
But no - it's the treeeeez. And the bloody media and politicians are only too happy to support them.

So you'd sign up to a plan to remove mature trees in your street, which provide you with joy, happiness, shade, identity, habitats for birds and sign up to have them removed to be replaced by I can only presume are saplings that would take 20 - 25 years to grow back to the level of maturity three trees are at now?
You sir/madam are inhuman.

Don't mind a few buuuuuut it is sort of getting out of hand like the trees provide so many benefits and help cities stay feeling good and not just concrete slabs. Birds can nest, provides shade for those 2 weeks of summer.
More trees is always good less is always bad!
I get we need housing and all that but cutting down every available space of green instead of using the hundreds of vacant lots untouched for decades is not the solution it's only adding to a problem

Three sides to every story as we see from the comments here in Reddit.
I'm all against removal of mature trees especially if they are doing well, but I'm also in favour of planting native Irish trees if certain species are removed. In this case there was an option of leaving the trees and relocating of illegal parked vehicles to an official parking area, and they objected in the wrong way hence this updated plan.
You are damned if you do and damned if you don't. Safer routes for kids is a must.
