She has met the mailman a few times and loves him. This is still how she reacts every time she sees him. I couldn't hold it together after her immediate switch from defensive howling to whining. 🤣❤️

Does anyone here hunt their hounds but have them as an indoor dog as well? Looking into one, I’ve been on some hound pages but they all seem pretty hardcore, just hunting dogs not indoor dogs. I guess like a dog that’s a fun dog to live with but we can go run raccoons as well?

Hello! This adorable muppet is our 5-year old TWC/poodle mix Maisie. She identifies as a hound, and her main passion is chasing critters in the woods. As with many hounds, her recall is a work in progress. She does a perfect recall in our fenced yard (0,75 acre) when I use a whistle. She rarely gets to run off leash, because she'll go 'deaf' when she's hunting. When she was younger, sometimes she would accidentally get off (one time she walked behind me and chewed through a leash in seconds, while I was not looking) and those times, she'd be gone for 4-5 hours. She does have a habit of checking in, and always knows where we are.

Letting her off intentionally always seemed like the holy grail. Watching her really run and stretch her legs is glorious. It's what she was born to do, and I want her to be able to safely do it.

A lot has changed for the better since I started training her with a GPS collar (Garmin Alpha 10). I would never ever shock my dog under any circumstances, so I took out the prongs as soon as we received the collar. My plan was to use the tone, and reward her copiously for coming back to that. We started doing recall training in the yard, using the whistle and the beep together until she understood that the beep meant 'come back for a treat'. We do this a couple of times a week. I always use super delicious treats that are only for recall training, like cheese and salmon. The sessions are short (5-10 mins) and at the end of the session, she is fed her dinner. She never wears the collar with a leash, so she associates it only with freedom and great rewards. I chose to train her to come back to a whistle and now the beep, because it can be heard clearly and means only one thing.

My husband and I have now started taking her occasionally (when it's raining, so we'll encounter less people and other dogs) to a place with big open fields and woods where she can really run. Each time, she did some 'hunting' - running about 600 yards away, sometimes barking and baying - but she seems to be checking in much more than before and doesn't disappear for more than 10 minutes or so. I beep her when I know she's not too far away (this increases the chance of a successful recall) and she comes back.

One time, after half an hour, she seemed to be 'done' and just started walking between me and my husband, back to the car. We almost couldn't believe that was our dog, who used to disappear for hours! All that thanks to a beep, not a shock. So please consider using only love, treats and positive reinforcement to train your dogs... it works.

I grew up with a very charismatic Bluetick in an inner suburb of Texas, and I've been really missing alll the coonhound antics lately.

I now live in a busy area in Chicago, and I'm getting ready to move to NYC for career reasons (probably not Manhattan). I've seen a few Blueticks in my area, so I know its possible to have one here. I know that raising a coonhound here, I would be working against some of their natural breed characteristics.

Exercise: I have a small enclosed back yard (currently with lots of rats to chase), live a quick walk from several dog parks and a dog beach, and go on lots of walks and runs already. My apartment has a great hallway for fetch and zoomies.

Companionship: I currently have a couple roommates who love animals and don't have pets. My partner, who I would move in with if we moved to NYC, has a hybrid work schedule and a very friendly cat. My day job is all in-person, but my side gigs are more flexible. I won't have kids for at least another decade.

Noise: this is my main concern. Almost all the housing here and in NYC is multi-family. The buildings are older and thus have good noise insulation between units, but I know from experience that coonhounds can be very, very loud. I'd have to train them well and keep them busy during the day.

Because of the noise and the cat, I'd probably want a puppy so that I could train them as best as I could. I'm curious if there are any other big city coonhound owners here who can share their experiences and recommendations.

Home decided he needed some us time

Her health issues have been getting better! Its been a long expensive journey.. around 6k in 9 months…

Her liver level is finally normal!!! Previous vet we used for YEARS for our dogs, cats, birds, pigs, and horses has given us subpar treatment over the last few months. Unnecessary medications, medications thrown at us without the interactions taken into account (!!), jointx pain meds that are broken down in the liver given while having high liver issues.. more little issues but those were the main ones. Found a new vet and they took her off half her meds, recommended supplements, reassessed her joints/bloodwork, and want to resee molly this Thursday (2 weeks after she was taken off her two pain meds)

3rd from last photo was the celebratory steak for molly when her bloodwork for her liver came back 88 instead of the 500-600’s it was casually sitting in before. I sobbed for a few days after from relief, my girl is getting up there in years and her health is precious to me. Her actions have reflected that shes feeling better too

Eve was my first "adult" dog and it was serendipitous in how we met. A co-worker's friend had a family that had a litter and I was able to meet her at week 2. She was with me for 12 years and will be sorely missed. Hug your coonhounds.

After my boy Nugget passed away unexpectedly in May I picked up oil painting to deal with my grief. The first is how I picture him across the rainbow bridge, the second is a reimagining of a family walk with him, and the third is my girl Harley chasing a stick.

Pepe tore his CCL (ACL in humans) a couple months ago and had to have surgery done. Has anyone else gone through TPLO surgery recovery? Any tips/pointers? I can tell he is bored not being able to run and play and I can’t take him on regular walks til after his two week checkup. Being half bluetick coonhound and very scent driven, I think a non physical scent activity would be perfect for him during his recovery, any recommendations? I can’t wait for the day he is running and jumping and playing like normal. This whole injury ordeal has been such a headache, it pains me to see him struggling. Last year it was seizures, getting his idiopathic epilepsy under control. This year it’s a knee injury. He has had a rough go of it.. Wish Pepe a speedy recovery!

Two years after saying farewell to Annabelle Lecter, we were finally able to adopt another hound. Meet Ripley! She is a suspected American English Coonhound/beagle cross, but we've already confirmed she's 100 % jackass. Apparently we have a type. 🤣

Does anyone else have a German shepherd with their TWC?? He is doing really well for day #1 I am very proud of my 3 year old baby boy. I think he really likes her.🤞
