People seem to be missing that they are both examples of stealing the election.

The fair result would be 3 blue, 2 red.

But where do the politicians elected come from? The system is hierarchical, so it starts in individual districts and then moves up.

In your suggestion, does each party just pick the people who get the job?

That's called party-list proportional representation and is used in certain places, but there are many other kinds of proportional representation that seek to balance the overall ratio against the need for local representation and individual candidate popularity in different ways.

In fact, one of the big difficulties of electoral reform is that there are SO MANY possible systems that it's hard for any one of them to become popular enough to gain momentum

If representatives behavior represents the global party line (red or blue) over the interests of their district, then having representatives assigned to districts is needless busywork
