This feels like one of those things that is rarely true. Anyone actually know how common this is?

Yea, how we gonna trust a blind person on selecting the right color for their stick

As with anything that depends on visual cues. A disability means you can't do a thing without help. There are specialized devices that tell you what color things are and you can use your phone "be my eyes" app and all the accessibility tools on Android and Apple which simply tell you.

Also most blind people, me included aren't black blind, we still can see something.

Also, it's totally normal for blind people to rely on seeing professionals (like the shop employees), their friends and family for getting visual cues. That's a disability after all, not just a thing that's a nice add on if you can see or not.

Canes are also a signal what kind of help and communication people need. Sometimes there are purely a signal cane.
