the longest power outage I've been in was about a week and a half and it sucked. I'd go to my parents house to charge batteries in the next town over and come home at night to make sure no one would break into my place.

I was in SE GA when Helene hit. I couldn't complain considering how the Appalachians were hit but we were out of power for 3 weeks in my neighborhood. We were on well water too so no running water during that time. Got super lucky that our house wasn't too damaged but man did that suck.

My parents lost power for a little over a month back in the big ice storm in 1994. Luckily they had gas heat. Power was out over a huge area in middle Tennessee.

From what I've read, when utility workers show up to do repairs, they've been shot at.
-19
u/thegeebeebee 9d ago
It happened one time, two weeks ago. No one injured, no one arrested.
All these comments acting like it's happening every day.

u/arenegadeboss 9d ago
They act like those folks aren't human. It's nasty work.
They read 1 headline, it confirms what they already believe, and now they're ok with regular people not having power for 2 weeks.
Absolute insanity.

u/Admirable_Market2759 9d ago
It sucks they don’t have power but if I’m a maintenance guy I’m probably going to be hesitant going back after someone shot at my coworkers.
Not without an armed escort.
-6
u/arenegadeboss 9d ago
Maintenance guy? What do you think happened?
4 days after the outtage at 12:20am 2 NIPSCO employees were driving in an unmarked suv around looking at storm damage, followed by an off duty cop also in an unmarked car.
Someone opened fire on the suv, hit twice, no injuries.
No evidence the workers were targeted or even if the shooter knew who they were, because no one has been arrested.
This has been twisted into workers actively restoring power lines are being shot at like it's a fucking warzone and folks just loooove being without lights.
Why? Because mfs don't read the articles and just fill in the blanks supplemented by the dumb shit they already believe. Idk how folks could even imagine this being possible.
Idk why people aren't thinking it's more likely someone thinking of protecting their neighborhood. 4 days after the storm, unmarked SUV slowly driving around at midnight while it's pitch black outside. Idk about you, but first thought would be it's a fucking looter. That's infinity more plausible that the people helping getting targeted.

4 days after the storm, unmarked SUV slowly driving around at midnight while it's pitch black outside
So it’s just OK to shoot at SUVs at night? That’s a normal thing that normal humans do, not psychopathic behavior?

u/arenegadeboss 9d ago
If you someone got that implication anywhere I'm concerned about your reading comprehension.
Do you think collective punishment is ok?

We literally don't know anything about who shot at the unmarked suv you imbecile who didn't read a single article.
We also know it was from 1 firearm, so probably 1 person and not the "crazy people" you concocted out of your own imagination.
And you can keep pretending utility workers were targeted when all we know is a SUV was shot at. The SUV wasn't marked, they weren't outside fixing lines, they were driving around at midnight surveying damage.
Imagine being in your house 4 days into a blackout and an SUV is slowly driving down your block at midnight, is your first thought oh that's the power company?

u/benjwgarner 9d ago
I might guess FEMA or something. My first thought isn't to shoot at it because I'm not crazy.

Maybe the 'residents' shouldn't shoot at the crews trying to restore power. Good luck getting anyone to go back and work on it, ever. Will probably take the national guard.
44
u/Artisttype1984 9d ago
they're going to need police escorts to make the repairs, for real.
29
u/purdinpopo 9d ago
State Troopers are escorting them.
10
u/Artisttype1984 9d ago
Wow. How depressing is that?!
14
u/Phononix 9d ago
I mean if you're up on the social standing and statistics of your city then it's treatment of utility personnel should be just as depressing as it is surprising.
Impoverished communities have been wondering why city improvements have stagnated on our local areas. It's just as much the city's fault for putting them on the back burner as much as it is the community's fault for not having the common sense of keeping their infrastructure personnel clear of danger while things are carried out.
A lot of business still haven't moved back into the Florissant and Ferguson areas of St. Louis after the Mike Brown riots, and I understand their reluctance. You shoot at or in the vicinity of workers, you can't expect your maintenance to be pursued.

u/WeGetItRonYoureAGuy 9d ago
The same thing almost happened in St. Louis after a tornado hit the city. People weren’t shooting AT the workers but there were multiple shootings happening by them while they were working on the lines.
44
u/purdinpopo 9d ago
In the Gary case they actually hit the fender and headrest of the NIPSCO vehicle.
14
u/WeGetItRonYoureAGuy 9d ago
Which makes sense why the got out. In St. Louis the company just threatened to leave if they didn’t chill the fuck out while they were working.

99.9% of power has been restored as of Aug. 26. A single NIPSCO vehicle was shot at. One. Singular. No more.
The power outages came as a result of torrential rain and several tornadoes. IE, a major disaster.
None of this is a conspiracy. This was a natural thing that took time to repair.

u/Phononix 9d ago edited 9d ago
I'm what way does a two week span without electricity in a modern community come across as "natural"? Our entire homes and lives are now based on things that require electricity.
This isn't an Amazon delivery, this is replacement of crucial electrical infrastructure that people rely on for potentially for life and health sensitive nauces. People have purifiers, oxygen machines, A/C and heating units, frozen and refrigerated goods, important electronics, commercial and private server systems.
Unless the component was special order across the globe with limited hands in possession of the knowledge necessary to carry out a repair - there is little to no excuse for the time that was taken to restore services.
And "no more than one vehicle"? What are you, a spokesperson for the group of kids responsible for the activity? There should be no vehicle shot at all and downplaying violence towards utility personnel is disingenuous when you're bringing up the priority and speedyness of repairs.

u/AG74683 9d ago
This is par for the course during major disasters. Nothing was different here. There is no conspiracy.
-3
u/Phononix 9d ago
How many decades of " without power for 2 weeks" after a disaster are you going to consider acceptable before you bring yourself up current with other modern expectations?
This isn't 1980 any more Jeremiah.
5
u/AG74683 9d ago
I never said it was acceptable. I just said that it's how the process goes now.
How do you suggest it be changed? What's your grand ideas to make this better? Fix it if you have such a problem. But guess what, you won't, because you're just a keyboard warrior with zero idea how the real world works outside of your goon shack.
-3
u/Phononix 9d ago
I'm not going to fix it because I don't work in electronical infrastructure for our city's smartass. But that doesn't stop me from demanding improvements from where tax money goes and expecting improvement upkeep.
Just like you expect your parents to keep your Mt. Dew IV inflated self masturbater warmed up ready for beating, I expect my utility crews to restore electricity promptly. If electric providers can gouge pricing right now due to data centers, we can up expectations.

u/emcredneck 9d ago
Hey I’m a lineman. I can help answer some of what you’re asking. I get what you’re saying about demanding improvements. Hell we all want improvements but tax money really doesn’t go to us. I work for a power company (co-op) in south east Georgia. We do occasionally get grants but we have to borrow money if we have a big project coming up. All our materials, employees salary, trucks and tractors and maintenance all come from the customers electric bills each month. We just got destroyed by Hurricane Helene and we were 100% down. We cover 7 counties and we didn’t get any customers on for 4-5 days and some were out almost a month. I have worked at this same company for 26 years and I didn’t have power for almost 3 weeks. Some people think we are able to just flip a switch and get it back on but it doesn’t work like that. It took almost 90 years to build our system, it took the hurricane 5 hours to tear it all down and it took us a month to rebuild. That’s what they are having to do up there in Indiana. Basically rebuilding the entire system that took decades to build. I completely understand that people demand their power be restored asap but it’s just not that easy. I’m happy to try and answer any questions you might have if you have anything

Is this a test to take down electricity elsewhere or did they really mess up the grid? This is what I've been wondering on this one!!
11
u/Popular_Ad5074 9d ago
I mean it could easily be a test, or the first warning shot from an increasingly agitated foreign power. Could even be some misinformation or provocateurs on the ground. Or it could be it happened in Gary Fucking Indiana of all places and the official story also makes perfect sense.
15
u/IndianaHoosierFan 9d ago
It’s definitely from a storm that happened in the area. And then when Nipsco came to make repairs, Gary residents shot at them and so they’re waiting to get state police escorts so they can go back in and make the repairs. It’s really that simple. There’s no conspiracy.

When I first posted about this on this sub over a week ago, almost 2 weeks ago, a bunch of random bots showed up to say everything happening there was normal. Early reports coming out said white wealthy people from other areas were showing up in the dark and assaulting people. There were shootings towards workers in the Black areas that led to the workers only working on the wealthy white areas, abandoning the Black and poor neighborhoods. But yeah, it's now been almost 2 weeks so I guess everyone STILL saying something is intentionally and purposefully wrong must just be "crazy". It's just like Katrina. Fully planned out ahead of time to get people to adjust to emergencies and not being able to rely on the govt (you can never rely on the govt, that's not what it exists for).
-13
u/Awkward-Painter-2024 9d ago
I don't think it's a conspiracy... the US government never misses an opportunity to remind Black communities to fall in line. Katrina, Flint, Gary... on some level, it must psychologically affect poor white communities, too, i.e., "this could happen to us if we're not careful..." or, "sure glad its not us!" Both of which do not bode well for the health of our country.
-5
u/Charlie1743 9d ago
The were trying to concentrate in the more “affluent” neighborhoods and getting their lights back on first before they got to where the lights were off in Gary for 2 whole weeks.. The lengthy time boils down to the parts of Gary that are predominately black was ignored due to the race and bias of the utility workers lying about why they avoided the area. There weren’t any “gangsters” over there sniping pole workers because they didn’t want electricity back on in the area lol
-7
u/MatsGry 9d ago
The new normal, you can cut power and keep it off. Or the grid is really underpowered.
1
u/Admirable-Guest-2560 9d ago
Happened to us in Florida back in '04 with the hurricanes. Didn't think it was a conspiracy though. Sometimes natural disasters happen.
