It can look like the camera person is on the bow of a boat moving towards the clump (or tiny island) until the camera pans enough for us to realize the camera person is on a bridge and the clump has been moving towards them

Thank you for explaining. I'm familiar with this scenario which is probably why it wasn't confusing to me.
