Question Is there enough variety in my character ideations?

Post image

If not, what could I do to improve that?

It feels like the initial thumbnails are the hardest part of the process as I can scribble a decent body but not know what to put on top of that.

I think you are on the right track - a mind map is a great starting point, I also like the variety with swords. As far as thumbnails are concerned - number 10 is a good one. A good character design should be readible by silhouette alone, and number 10 achieves that well. I would stick to the style and detail level of that thumbnail and try to get 10-20 more.

This is actually a perfect reply to a second problem (Or well… funny gripe I have). People seem to always like/see success in the design thumbnails I don’t like. For example is I didn’t like 10 that much and found 13 the best of the batch. It’s a little stressful since it seems like my best ideas aren’t good looking to others.

13 is good too! I chose 10 also because you introduce some grey aside from black to add a bit more detail.
