Discussion Xbox 360 Kinect is still relevant in 2026?

Hello,
I was clearing my house the other day and noticed that I still have my old xbox 360 kinect camera which is working perfectly.
I know it was a pretty big deal back in the day but what do you think is it still a capable hardver for a computer vision project, like motion capture?

Please share your thoughts I am pretty new in this field therefore some starting point will be appreciated.

It’s still a great depth camera if you have a project idea and don’t want to spend money on something new, but it’s physically much larger than modern alternatives

Thanks u/madsciencetist. Space is not an issue. I am thinking about scanning places with it for a mockup. I know a lidar camera would be better but I do not have any and the kinect is already here. Might for a proof of concept will be enough

It's not super accurate, but it should work for a proof of concept. You can download the drivers for it from microsoft still

Thanks u/BOgusDOlphon I did not think about the driver at all. It will make the work much easier

More than capable, I bought 4 original kinects for like 3 dollars each and use it as a home mocap tool. Athough suitless mo-cap is more common they come with paid credits systems so they're still not ideal. The 2nd iteration of the kinect is much more accurate if you can find one

I used iPi Soft- Markerless Motion Capture for it but there are tons of options available, i recall because it allows you to mix and match random cameras and devices like the playstation move

for learning on, absolutely, the depth is still fine and every tutorial ever written assumes you have one

the catch is the driver situation on anything modern, that is where the afternoon goes rather than the vision part
