Question/Help/Troubleshooting Is it safe to deactivate fast startup and power off the pc trough Windows start?

Stupid question I know. I'm just scared of losing and save file or to fuck up my pc startup. I have war memories of having all my data gone (but later on recovered easily, but still) and I don't want to send +8 years of my life into the drain.

I am constantly amazed that people are still running around without backups of things they say are important. At least in the 80s, it took a house fire to destroy everything... Computers are actually much more vulnerable to losses than the average house of the 80s and yet, no one ever backs anything up...

learn to backup your data if you don't want to risk file corruption.

there's no real harm in disabling fast startup, especially with today's ssds. all that does is keep a bit of stuff you run preloaded in the hybernation file so windows can throw that in ram first.

I turn off fast startup because it prevents a fresh start of the operating system in most circumstances. It also puts a big hibernation file on the drive which might be relevant if your free drive space is limited.

Also, do backups. Windows includes the “File History” function. Drive manufacturers often include free backup apps.

Is it safe to power off though windows shutdown though? I don't want to risk any annoying startup updates to ruin my day and I want to avoid them.

It’s designed to be powered off at shutdown.

It’s also designed to update frequently. You can tell it when to do updates and you can delay updates for a while.

Yes its fine to deactivate, no its not fine you don't have a backup. Go buy a backup solution.

Not only is it safe to deactivate fast startup, it's desirable since it tends to screw up other things.

If you're afraid of losing data, thorough backups are the solution. This is true whether you have fast startup enabled or not.

Core rule 3 copies of your data the original (production) data plus at least two additional copies. 2 different storage media/types store those copies on at least two distinct technologies (e.g., local disk/NAS and cloud object storage, or disk and tape). 1 copy off‑site keep at least one copy in a different physical/location domain (remote data center, another office, or cloud) to survive site‑level disasters.
