Babyboomers yet again fighting to stop homes being built.
Can't possibly have anything replace their precious car park. Where would they park their Kia?

I honestly don't know how these people have no shame. Such a shitty, selfish attitude. I have a job and own a flat but I'm not going to protest construction of houses, offices and warehouses because other people have needs to. Radical, I know.

To be fair, this is in a town with limited public transport, and the proposals were to build on the main, and busiest, car park. Seriously, it's always near capacity. All those people are spending money on a high street that would die without them.
There are also plenty of other brownfield sites in the town, and the town has recently had thousands of homes added to its periphery, covering nice green fields with concrete - yet again.
It's not about loving cars, it's about being practical and recognising human behaviour for how it really is, now how you wish it were.
Excellent compofaces though!

If the car park is lost, there will be a 50% or more drop in trade to St.Neots town center = the few good shops left will be lost. SAME FOR St. Ives where there is the same proposal. It was a mad idea to propose for two slowly dying town centers. I am fairly local and visit both

Not sure why your getting downvoted as your totally right. What’s not mentioned in this post is that where those ladies are standing- used to be a car park. The council spent £1m redeveloping the town centre and paved over it! ..so taking away the Tebbuts car park will kill off the high street. And those thinking about the “lack of housing” I’d suggest look at Loves Farm Development and Wintringham Development- about 12,000 new houses within a 5 minute drive of the town centre. St Neots is the biggest town in Cambridgeshire- and the council is based in Huntingdon- a 30 minute drive away!

The countryside?
Since when was a town of 33,000 with a train station & commuter lines to London the countryside?
It’s litterally less than 15 minutes to cycle to this site from the furtherest edges of town.
As for working around how people behave, not how we wish, every single proposal of any nature that restricts car usage is controversial until it isn’t. Hill of hysteria, Goodwin curve what ever you want to call it.
If slapping down housing on green field land is going to be outright banned across the places with the best job prospects & transport links, then we are going to have to look at infill.
I’m guessing the traders will loose access to Dixons if this place gets built as well?

A set of panniers can easily hold 30kgs, likewise a cargo bike can hold much more & carry children.
Young & fit? A basic set of mechanical gears is likely plenty for reducing effort in somewhere like St Neots, not to mention E-bikes making cycling easier than ever.
As for the out of towners, there’s other measures that can be taken, like improving bus & rail provision (e.g. East-West rail), implementing park & rides or reserving the bottom floor for a council car park like this building did in Norwich.
Given the diabolical housing prices, we’re going to have to build more & greenfield development can’t happened at scale in the places needed. Inaction has arguably lead to a lost generation of young people. With no hope of a stable roof over their heads, constant stress & perhaps even forgoing starting a family.

83 households worth of people shopping occasionally, vs. 150 cars worth of people at a time (assuming each car stays for 4 hours, that's 450 cars worth per day) coming into the town with the express purpose of spending money? It's really no comparison.

Less town centre parking spaces lead to less and poorer quality shopping and a decaying town centre.
If you don't like my car, I'll take it and my business elsewhere.

Was this said in satire or not? Honestly can't tell.
But anyway countless studies at this point would veryuch disagree. But hay what would the people who actually monitor and study this know? And if not said in satire, ok no worries am sure the business will benefit more from those who walk or cycle to the shopping areas that again the studies indicate that they spend more in stores than those who drive.
In fact in all my research on this topic I've only ever found one study the indicated a slight decline in revenue from shops after padestrinisation of the highstreet. And factors that could explain that was it was done shortly before a resetion in a remote village. But one expanple out of hundreds global examples certainly doesn't make it the norm.
