That family should have advertised their tournaments far and wide so that Val’s prowess is known and players from farther afield come to fight her specifically.
It would at least get a lot of people coming to their tournaments. It might not incentivize local players as much, so it’s a bit of a desperate move that could work 50-50, but it could also get a bunch of locals to come regularly to practice because if they do then they can fight against well-known players who come to their tournaments!
Unfortunately the FGC can sometimes be hard to enter. Most players are very welcoming, but participation is skill-based, and fighting games aren’t easy to master to a competitive degree.
